THE SEMINOLE INDIAN WARS (1814-1858) Compiled by Brian Brindle Version 0.1 © 2013 Dadi&Piombo This supplement was designed to the cover three small American wars fought between 1814-1858 known today as the “Seminole Wars”. These Wars were primary gorilla style wars fought between the Seminole Indians and the U.S. army . The wars played out in a series of small battles and skirmishes as U.S. Army chased bands of Seminole worriers through the swamps IofN Florida. The Principal Indian Towns of Western Pennsylvania C. Hale Sipe One cannot travel far in Western Pennsylvania with- out passing the sites of Indian towns, Delaware, Shawnee and Seneca mostly, or being reminded of the Pennsylvania Indians by the beautiful names they gave to the mountains, streams and valleys where they roamed. In a future paper the writer will set forth the meaning of the names which the Indians gave to the mountains, valleys and streams of Western Pennsylvania; but the present paper is con- fined to a brief description of the principal Indian towns in the western part of the state. The writer has arranged these Indian towns in alphabetical order, as follows: Allaquippa's Town* This town, named for the Seneca, Queen Allaquippa, stood at the mouth of Chartier's Creek, where McKees Rocks now stands. In the Pennsylvania, Colonial Records, this stream is sometimes called "Allaquippa's River". The name "Allaquippa" means, as nearly as can be determined, "a hat", being likely a corruption of "alloquepi". This In- dian "Queen", who was visited by such noted characters as Conrad Weiser, Celoron and George Washington, had var- ious residences in the vicinity of the "Forks of the Ohio". In fact, there is good reason for thinking that at one time she lived right at the "Forks". When Washington met her while returning from his mission to the French, she was living where McKeesport now stands, having moved up from the Ohio to get farther away from the French. After Washington's surrender at Fort Necessity, July 4th, 1754, she and the other Indian inhabitants of the Ohio Val- ley friendly to the English, were taken to Aughwick, now Shirleysburg, where they were fed by the Colonial Author- ities of Pennsylvania. -

MUSCOGEE (CREEK) NATION SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION PROGRAM James R. Floyd Health Care Management Scholarship Scholarship Description Chief James R. Floyd is the Principal Chief of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, the fourth largest Tribe in the Nation with more than 80,500 citizens. James grew up in Eufaula, Oklahoma. After completing his Associates Degree at OSU in Oklahoma City he started his professional career with the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Tribe, working first in Environmental Services. He became the manager of Health Services, then Director of Community Services. In these positions he implemented the tribe’s first food distribution, social services, burial assistance, and school clothing allowance programs. Chief Floyd managed the first tribal-owned hospital in the United States at Okemah, and negotiated the transfer of the Okemah, Eufaula, Sapulpa, and Okmulgee Dental clinics from Indian Health Service to Muscogee (Creek) Tribal management. Chief Floyd is a strong advocate of higher education. Chief Floyd embraced and accepted his role as Principal Chief of the Nation’s fourth-largest Native American tribe in January of 2016. Throughout his career with the Indian Health Service and the Department of Veteran’s Affairs, Chief Floyd has continued to serve Native Americans throughout the United States, while always keeping in mind how his efforts could benefit his own Creek Nation. As a pioneer in Indian Health Care, Chief Floyd has been recognized nationally for establishing outreach to Native American communities. He ensured that the first of these reimbursements agreements was established with the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. He also held the first tribal veterans summit at Muskogee. -

Image courtesy of the Smithsonian American Art Museum LegendsArkansas.com For additional information on CNB’s cultural tourism program, go to VisitCherokeeNation.com THE CROSSING OF PATHS TIMELINE OF CHEROKEES IN ARKANSAS Late 1780s: Some Cherokees began to spend winters hunting near the St. Francis, White, and Arkansas Rivers, an area then known as “Spanish Louisiana.” According to Spanish colonial records, Cherokees traded furs with the Spanish at the Arkansas Post. Late 1790s: A small group of Cherokees relocated to the New Madrid settlement. Early 1800s: Cherokees continued to immigrate to the Arkansas and White River valleys. 1805: John B. Treat opened a trading post at Spadra Bluff to serve the incoming Cherokees. 1808: The Osage ceded some of their hunting lands between the Arkansas and White Rivers in the Treaty of Fort Clark. This increased tension between the Osage and Cherokee. 1810: Tahlonteeskee and approximately 1,200 Cherokees arrived to this area. 1811-1812: The New Madrid earthquake destroyed villages along the St. Francis River. Constitution of the Shawnee Tribe
CONSTITUTION OF THE SHAWNEE TRIBE PREAMBLE We, the members of the Shawnee Tribe (formerly incorporated by agreement dated June 7, 1869, and approved on June 9, 1869, with the Cherokee Nation,) desire to retain our separate identity in order to preserve our Tribal culture and ensure tranquility among the Tribal members, whereby we may prosper with economic independence and social advancement. The Shawnee Tribe is an inseparable part of the United States. Therefore, we accept the United States Constitution as the supreme law of the land, and the Shawnee Tribe will not attempt to implement any laws, rules, or regulations in conflict with the Constitution of the United States of America. ARTICLE I - NAME The name of this Tribe shall be Shawnee Tribe, recognizing however that we are the same people and Tribe who have been called, variously, the “Ohio Shawnee”; the “Cherokee Shawnee”; the “Shawnee Cherokee”; the “United Tribe of Shawnee”; and the “Loyal Shawnee.” ARTICLE II—TERRITORY AND JURISDICTION The sovereign authority and jurisdiction of the Shawnee Tribe shall extend to all the territory now or ever known as SHAWNEE LANDS, which includes lands within the boundaries of the State of Oklahoma not within the boundaries of the Cherokee Nation; or within the Cherokee Nation if approved by the Cherokee Nation; the original Shawnee Reservation within the boundaries of the Kansas Territory, now known as the State of Kansas; all Indian lands beneficially owned by the current and future members of the Shawnee Tribe; all lands which may be acquired by the Shawnee Tribe for its land base; and all Indian Country of the Shawnee Tribe and its members as now or hereafter defined by federal law.
