Major drawback concerned that rubberwood is very prone to attack by fungi and wood borers, and the preservation method using boron compounds exhibited hazardous effect to the workers. Fungal-based biological control agents have gained wide acceptance and Schizophyllum commune secondary metabolite played an important role in term of antifungal agent productivity. The effects of initial pH, incubation temperature and agitation on biomass production by S. commune were investigated under submerged shake culture. In this work, it was found that the synthetic medium with initial solution pH of 6.5 and incubated at 30ºC with shaking at 150 rpm provided the highest biomass production. The biomass extract from S. commune was then applied onto the rubberwood block panel to investigate its effectiveness. The results showed that biomass extract at a concentration of 5 µg/µL could inhibit the growth of selected rubberwood-degrading fungi, such as Lentinus sp., L. strigosus and Pycnoporus sanguineus. Fruit-bodies of the white-rot basidiomycetes Hymenochaete rubiginosa and Stereum hirsutum were identified. Presence of Fuscoporia ferrea and Mycena galericulata was analysed by rDNA- ITS sequencing. The degradation patterns was studied by analytical pyrolysis combined with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). Relative peak areas were calculated for pyrolysis products arising from carbohydrates and lignin. The pyrograms of control and decayed wood showed the same degradation products but with different quantities. The lignin/ carbohydrate ratio increased, whereas the lignin syringyl/guaiacyl ratio decreased. This was due to the preferential degradation of the carbohydrates and syringylpropanoid structures. INTRODUCTION Wood degradation occurs through brown-, white- and soft-rot fungi (Eaton and Hale 1993, Schmidt 2006). White-rot predominates in hardwoods (Gilbertson 1980). It is divided into simultaneous white rot and selective delignification (Liese 1970, Nilsson 1988). Soft rot is mainly caused by ascomycetes and deuteromycetes. Characteristic is their preferential growth within the cell wall and the formation of cavities (Findlay and Savory 1954, Liese 1955, Levy 1965). In addition to specimens collected in the field, small pieces of coarse woody debris (usually dead branches) were collected from the three study areas, returned to the laboratory, and placed in plastic incubation chambers to which water was added. Fruiting bodies of fungi appearing in these chambers over a period of several months were collected and processed in the same manner as specimens associated with decaying wood in the field. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) ribosomal DNA region was sequenced, and these sequences were blasted against the NCBI database. A total of 320 different fungal taxa were recorded, the majority of which could be identified to species. Two hundred thirteen taxa were recorded as field collections, and 68 taxa were recorded from the incubation chambers. Thirty-nine sequences could be recorded only as unidentified taxa. -

Abstract: The B mating-type locus of the tetrapolar basidiomycete Schizophyllum commune encodes pheromones and pheromone receptors in multiple allelic specificities. This work adds substantial new evidence into the organization of the B mating-type loci of distantly related S. commune strains showing a high level of synteny in gene order and neighboring genes. Four pheromone receptor-like genes were found in the genome of S. commune with brl1, brl2 and brl3 located at the B mating-type locus, whereas brl4 is located separately. Expression analysis of brl genes in different developmental stages indicates a function in filamentous growth and mating. Based on the extensive sequence analysis and functional characterization of brl-overexpression mutants, a function of Brl1 in mating is proposed, while Brl3, Brl4 and Brl2 (to a lower extent) have a role in vegetative growth, possible determination of growth direction. The brl3 and brl4 overexpression mutants had a dikaryon- like, irregular and feathery phenotype, and they avoided the formation of same-clone colonies on solid medium, which points towards enhanced detection of self-signals. Eth- nomycological information was gathered using semi-structured interviews with participants from different mycological associations in Serbia. A total of 62 participants were involved in this study. Eighty-five species belonging to 28 families were identified. All of the reported fungal species were pointed out as edible, and only 15 of them were declared as medicinal. The family Boletaceae was represented by the highest number of species, followed by Russulaceae, Agaricaceae and Polypo- raceae. We also performed detailed analysis of the literature in order to provide scientific evidence for the recorded medicinal use of fungi in Serbia. The male participants reported a higher level of ethnomycological knowledge compared to women, whereas the highest number of used fungi species was mentioned by participants within the age group of 61–80 years. WELFORD ROAD CEMETERY BIOBLITZ 2016 Acknowledgements The organisers would like to thank all partners involved in the event; particularly members of the public, surveyors and volunteers who gave their time to take part and without whom the Welford Road Cemetery Leicester BioBlitz 2016 would not have been possible. A total of 316 species were found during the Leicester Bioblitz at Welford Road Cemetery 120 children took part What Is A A BioBlitz is an event varying in length but can last up to one whole day (24-hours) during which intense biological surveys are conducted within a designated area. It aims to record all living species present, from animals and plants, to fungi and algae. A BioBlitz strives to cover as many taxa as possible, with specialist scientists and naturalists from a range of disciplines pooling their identification abilities and knowledge to produce a species record. The term was coined in 1996 by Susan Rudy, a US National Park Service naturalist who helped with the first ever event at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, Washington DC. Since then, BioBlitzes have taken place all across the world. BioBlitz events which are held annually/seasonally or in a particular location can help build up a better picture of how the site changes and supports biodiversity over time. Alongside the scientific data gathered, an important component of any BioBlitz is the involvement of the public and encouragement of citizen science. Events like this, which allow local people to engage with the biodiversity in their area, provide people with an excellent opportunity to venture into the world of science and conservation and to better understand the nature world around them.
