FROM THE JOURNAL COMMITTEE

WE APOLOGIZE

In last month’s letter to congregants announcing the 2019 Journal honorees, we wanted to show our excitement for those women who are exemplars of empowerment, but wrongfully referenced the term “Me Too”. It was not our intent to associate anyone with the “me too movement,” and we sincerely apologize to the honorees and any congregants that may have been offended by this. Let us move forward to honor these women who have devoted themselves to this Congregation with tireless energy and dedication. Help us show our appreciation by making this event a success.

Sincerely, Helene and Lew

The Rabbi's Discretionary Fund

Most synagogue funds are used for the benefit of the synagogue, but the Rabbi's Discretionary Fund in par- ticular, is for the benefit of people in need in the community. Unfortunately, as the needs have increased, con- tributions to the Fund have decreased. Keep making the contributions that you have, but if you are able to give something additional for this Fund, please do. All donors are acknowledged, both with a card and in the Bulletin, unless you wish your donation to be anonymous. Thanks and best wishes.

Our Daily Minyan is in Need of Your Support

Congregation Shaaray Shalom has a long history of supporting the many congregants who need to say Kaddish and observe yahrzeiten. Our constant pleas for participation sometimes work. We have a few new faces and some returning ones. All are welcome to spend a few minutes on Monday and Thursday mornings at 6:30 am and Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 8:30 am. This is another NO EXPERIENCE needed pro- gram and our clergy are always willing to help you learn and become more proficient at davening and maybe someday be a leader. We now conduct minyan services in memory and honor of David Weiss, -@'. We are looking to start a small list of those who can be on standby via TEXT messaging for any of the mornings. A group text would be sent only if we are missing #10 and if one person responds, the others would go on their way. It is a modern approach to the old fashioned apparatus on the wall and it can contact many people in a FLASH. Please contact Rich Selzer: 516 680 3710 / [email protected] or Leah Freeberg: 516 984-7782 / [email protected] to add your name to this list . Our minyan continues to be one of our strengths. Please help us continue it.

Greetings from the Ritual Committee

At the Ritual Committee meeting on June 6th we thanked all those who have volunteered with davening, Torah, Haftorah readings and D’var Torahs to help make our services more meaningful. We are in desperate need of volunteers to attend our daily minyan.. While we have had difficulties maintaining minyanim the Committee decided that it is important for the Shul to continue to have weekday morning and evening services. The Committee is looking for volunteers to serve as usher coordinators for the upcoming High Holidays. The usher coordinator will line up the personnel and schedule for ushers that are needed for the High Holiday services. Letters will be arriving soon asking congregants to choose the date and time they would like to have an honor. The Yizkor book for the upcoming new year is in the process of being put together. If you would like your departed loved ones included, please respond to the letter that you will be receiving shortly. Once again, we reviewed the Committee’s policy regarding the length of Shabbat services. To have services end on time the Committee believes that services must begin promptly at 9:00 AM.

Jeff Smith and Henry Luft Ritual Committee Co-chairs

FROM THE HIGH HOLIDAY COMMITTEE

Dear Congregant,

The High Holidays will be upon us before we know. In order to honor and accommodate our members as best we can, this year we will be repeating last year’s successful approach to make sure that everyone receives their deserved honors for opening the ark. A card will accompany the letter you will receive at your mailing address. Please fill out the card checking off the day and time you would prefer to be given the honor. We will try to accommodate each request to the best of our abilities. Obviously, we cannot give honors to every congregant, but we will try to make sure congregants who were not given an honor last year will be the first this year. For this approach to work, we need the cards returned to the synagogue as soon as possible. The last date for submission will be August 2, 2019. If for any reason you do not wish to be given an honor, please check the appropriate box so that someone else may be called upon. This process should help services to run in a more timely and organized manner. You will be notified of your honor as soon as possible so that we can all plan accordingly.

All the best, Larry Rosenberg Jeff Smith Henry Luft High Holiday Committee

TISHA b’AV

The ninth of Av is the eternal day of tragedy. It is observed with fasting and the recitation of Eicha, Lamentations, in the evening. At Shacharit the service differs in that t’fillin are not worn and there is the recitation of different kinot. A question to be asked is why the instituted this day of mourning. Tisha b’Av marks the day that both Temples were destroyed and that, in and of itself, was a great tragedy, however, the day was described as an eternal day of tragedy which connotes that more happened on that date. I’ll get to that in a moment. Before Rosh Chodesh Av even arrives there is a period of three weeks during which joyous celebrations are not held. On the Seventeenth of Tammuz (Shiva Asar b’Tammuz) a fast is also observed. Five disasters occurred on that date: 1. Moshe came down from Mount Sinai to discover the people worshipping the Golden Calf and in his broke the tables. 2. While Jerusalem was under siege, the daily offering was stopped because the Kohanim could no longer obtain sheep for the sacrifice. 3. In 70 CE the Romans breached the walls of Jerusalem. 4. The Roman general, Apostumus, burned a Torah scroll. 5. The Romans set up an idol in the Temple courtyard. Three weeks later, on Tisha b’Av the Temple was destroyed. It seems as though HaShem felt it was a ‘good’ date on which bad things should happen. Bad things happened centuries before there even was a Temple. On June 29, in Parasha Sh’lach, we read about the appointment and reports of the spies sent to scout the land. The report brought back by all but two of the men was less than comforting. It served to put fear into the hearts of the people and make them reticent to enter the land. (Which as it turned out, they were not permitted to do. They would die in the wilderness.) The spies report came on Tisha b’Av. We already know that both Temples were destroyed. But do you also know that the Bar Kochba Revolt, which took three years, was crushed on Tisha b’Av when the city of Beitar fell? (An aside here is that the Romans did not allow the dead to be buried as a warning to future rebellions. Legend has it that for fifteen years they lay in the field, but miraculously their bodies did not decompose. When the Jews were finally allowed to bury the bodies, the Rabbis composed the fourth blessing in the Birkat HaMazon to thank HaShem for preserving the bodies and enabling them to be buried.) In relatively modern times tragedy also took place. In 1492 the Jews were expelled from Spain and in 1914, World War I began. were given the right of inheritance. EARLY MORNING WORKING SERVICE for YIZKOR

The early morning minyan for Shavuot for those that needed to say Yizkor had a wonderful turnout of 13 people. Everyone in attendance was given some sort of an honor and it is a very important mitzvah that we are able to conduct this service. Arriving at 6 AM and ending by 8 AM is a wonderful thing.. Thank you to all the hearty souls who join in for this special EARLY service and special thanks to the Rabbi who not only pitched a double header but literally did it all; run the service, read the Torah and the Haftorah, as well as, a brief dvar torah Thank you very much to everyone

HEALING, HOPE AND HUMOR

Dr. Richard Drachtman, the nephew of Lenny and Renee Drachtman, is the Chief of Pediatric Oncology at Robert Woods Johnson/Barnabas Hospital. Pediatric Oncology is a most challenging profession. What follows is a letter from an eight-year-old patient to his Doctor. That patient is now a college student and the letter became a part of his college essay. It is heart warming to see a doctor patient relationship where the doctor addresses both the physical and emotional needs of his patient. Dr. Drachtman is a source of great pride to Lenny and Renee and he richly deserves the praise from his hospital and patients.

It was fall in the city of New Brunswick. Early fall to be precise, right when the leaves change from the brightened green to a crimson gold. I was on a voyage to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. As usual, I had the butterflies, but I had been down this road before. A year into treatment, I had gotten used to what was transpiring around my life. This day was a routine check-up with a dose of chemotherapy to make my day. Proceeding through the hook-up to my medication, my parents and I were told to go into the back office to meet with my new oncologist. A balding man with dark hair, about in his fifties, awaited us. He and my parents started discussing paperwork in response to my blood work from the lab. As I felt myself dozing off in utter boredom, Dr. Drachtman smiled, and suddenly a loud noise erupted from the room. Specifically, it was the noise of a fart, followed by more farts. He revealed his phone with a “fart machine” app. I had never laughed so hard since before my diagnosis. Then he quickly asked me, “Hey Brian. Do you like Mel Brooks?” I eagerly nodded. Spaceballs was one of my favorite movies. He pulled up YouTube and looked up a scene from Brooks’ Blazing Saddles. I watched as a ragtag group of Western cowboys sat around a fire in silence, eating their beans. The silence was ripped apart by the cutting sound of a fart. Then another. Then another. A minute into the video and all the cowboys were tooting from these beans. I started laughing, harder than before. I laughed so much that I felt like I was going to cough up a lung with tears running down my face. From that moment, I knew he was different. He had my second-grade sense of humor. He related to me in a way no doctor could: through means of methane emissions. At this point, I was 8 and had gone through a year of treatment for my leukemia. I was horrified at all of the things that were happening. In that first year, strangers were hooking me up to odd machines and putting unknown substances into my body. I had little comprehension of what my treatment was. However, to see the open humor that this strange man had shared with me, it gave me hope. It made me feel like any other kid. One thing you don’t see kids lose to cancer is their innocence. Even though Dr. Drachtman couldn’t give me back that feeling of invincibility, he gave me strength to be positive in the shadow of a terrible disease. It was therapeutic to me, experiencing traumatic events and facing the jaws of , to have some fun along the way. Since then, Dr. Drachtman and I have spent countless hours in his office talking about comedy and having a good time. The best part was teasing his medical students. He had informed me a great deal about my sickness and the medication I was taking. I never let something be put into my body without knowing what it was. Because of this, I would quiz his students. When an eight-year-old asks you what the side effects of Augmentin are, you get side-stumped. I hit the students out of nowhere with my questions, telling them they needed to study more. All in good humor of course. In all, Dr. Drachtman was and continues to be a spark of laughter and joy in my life.

Once again, our Holocaust Remembrance Day observance was a strong statement of reflection and memorialization. Our guest speaker, Rabbi Joseph Potasnik, spoke to the question of What is the message of yesterday for today? – linking the realities of the Shoah to the acts of hatred and violence we are seeing today. We were so pleased to see a full house of about 400 people representing all ages and many faith groups. No doubt our Yom HaShoah program has become recognized as a prominent Yom HaShoah commemoration. One week before the program both Rabbi Potasnik and Rabbi Siegel (from Hofstra Hillel) were interviewed by PBS television promoting the program and speaking to the topic. The program was aired on Long Island, NYC and New Jersey reaching a large audience. In addition to being joined by Elmont Jewish Center, Malverne Jewish Center, Valley Stream Jewish Center and Valley Stream Hadassah, the program was co-sponsored by the Jewish Community Relations Council of Long Island, the Nassau County Commission on Human Rights and the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County (HMTC). These cosponsors proved to be of great value in creating awareness and content. Page 16

Two significant new elements enlarged the program. Prior the main session, a separate session for high school students was facilitated by the HMTC. The students in a small venue, over pizza, spoke with Leo Malek, a Survivor from our community. This breakthrough in connecting with students will be enlarged in the coming years. Also, we heard from Dr. Petra Gelbart, a descendant of a Romani family, persecuted at Auschwitz. Her singing of Ausvicate in her native tongue was most moving. The presence of many community leaders from the government and organizational sectors continues to make a strong statement of recognition that the memory of the Shoah must be preserved and communicated by public groups. • Laura Curran, Nassau County Executive • Patrick Ryder, Commissioner of Police, Nassau County Police Department • Thomas DiNapoli, NYS Comptroller • Todd Kaminsky, NYS Senator • Laura Gillen, Town of Hempstead Supervisor • Rodney McRae, Executive Director, Nassau County Commission on Human Rights • Jack Schnirman, Nassau County Comptroller • Mindy Perlmutter Executive Director of the Jewish Community Relations Council of LI • Vincent Muscarella and Laura Schaefer Nassau County Legislators • Tom Muscarella, Town of Hempstead Councilman • Eric Post, American Jewish Committee • Alicia Post, American Zionist Movement • Steven Markowitz, Chair, HMTC. • Helen Turner, Senior Director of Education and Community Affairs, HMTC • Beth Lilach, Director of Youth Education, HMTC • Magdalonie Campbell, representing Senator Kristen Gillibrand • Jerry Barmash, representing Senator Kevin Thomas • Dr. Tahir Kukaj, Albanian Islamic Cultural Center of Staten Island • Reverend Walter Kedjierski, Diocese of Rockville Centre • Reverend Rodney McDowell • Rabbi Kelemer, Young Israel of West Hempstead • Rabbi Kahati, B’Nai Israel of Elmont • Rabbi Jay Rosenbaum • Rabbi Linda Goodman • Hanon Simhon, VP of Self-Help Holocaust Survivor Program

Our guest speaker, Rabbi Joseph Potasnik delivered a message of historical reflection, family experiences and the events of the world today. His words call upon us and our leaders to remember and to raise the alarm early when anti-Semitism and hatred in all forms comes to the surface. The heart of the service, as in past years, was the lighting of the six memorial candles. The Survivors, the Survivor representatives and the guests were escorted by ten students from our congregational family. The linking of Survivors and youth is a strong indication of our Jewish continuity. Yom HaShoah at Shaaray Shalom is supported by the dedicated efforts of many people. Our appreciation is extended to: • Rabbi Vernon and Cantor Rosner, as well as all the clergy from the co-sponsoring Shuls, for their spiritual and religious leadership • Will Cadena Photography, for his outstanding photographic coverage. www.willcadena.com • Doni Polotsky of Grapevine Events, our caterer, for cateringthe collation • Jewish Memorial Chapel of Long Island for providing the large memorial candles • Helene Fastman and members of the Shaaray Shalom Choir: Sylvia Baxt, Ralph Greenberg, Les Rubin, Sue Glatman and Roberta Rowner for their vocal inspiration • David Schmidt, Organist Page 17

• Men’s Club for the candle distribution • Ira Litkofsky, Chanene Hinds and Jorge Suazo for putting everything together If we have omitted anyone, please forgive the oversight. Most importantly, we extend our sincere appreciation to the congregation and the community that each year comes together in great numbers to embrace Yom HaShoah, in a spiritual link to the memory of the Martyrs and the lives of the Survivors.
