Cornell University 2015 The Hebrew Bible contains seventeen isolated passages, scattered from Genesis to 2 brother”) to define an inter-group“) אח Samuel, that use the Hebrew term relationship between two or more Israelite tribes. For over a century, biblical scholars have interpreted this terminology as conceptually dependent on the birth narratives and genealogies of Gen 29-50, reiterated in stories and lists elsewhere in the biblical corpus. However, examination of the Bible’s depiction of the Israelite tribes as “brothers” outside these seventeen passages indicates that the static genealogical structure of the twelve-tribe system constitutes a late ideological framework that harmonizes dissonant descriptions of Israel as an association of “brother” tribes. Significantly, references to particular tribal groups as “brothers” in the Mari archives yields a new paradigm for understanding the origins of Israelite tribal “brotherhood” that sets aside this ideological structure. Additionally, it reveals the ways in which biblical scribes exploited particular terms and ideas as the fulcrums for editorial intervention in the Hebrew Bible’s composition. More specifically, close analysis of these Akkadian texts reveals the existence of an ancient Near Eastern political discourse of “brotherhood” that identified tribal groups as independent peer polities, bound together through obligations of reciprocal peaceful relations and supportive behavior. A detailed examination of Judg 19-21 ,in this precise situated meaning אח brings to light a textual core that uses the word indicating that the original source concerned a war between Israel and Benjamin as allowed later scribes אח separate polities of parity status. The polysemic character of to incorporate this textual tradition by reorienting the term’s situated meaning to fit evolving ideologies of Israelite and early Jewish identity in a manner that is detectable in additional biblical passages. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Dustin Dale Nash received his Bachelor of Arts in 2004 from Luther College of Decorah, IA. He subsequently attended the Hebrew University of Jerusalem from 2004-2005 as a visiting graduate student, while also serving as an intern at the Bible Lands Museum during the spring of 2005. In 2007 Dustin received a Master of Theological Studies from Harvard Divinity School, and 2011, a Master of Arts from Cornell University. During his graduate studies at Cornell, Dustin has presented original research at both the Annual Meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature in 2009 and 2013, as well as an academic symposium honoring Dr. David I. Owen in 2010. In addition, Dustin was the recipient of the Beatrice R. The reluctance is due to the fact that the work is so lucidly done, that any setting forth of the method or purpose by way of introduction would be a work of supererogation. The pleasure results from the fact that the book is the outcome of our survey of the Historic move- ment in the redeeming activity of God as seen in the Old Testament, in the Westminster Bible School. While I was giving lectures on that subject, it was my good fortune to have the co—operation of Mr. Mar- tin Anstey, in a series of lectures on these dates. My work was that of sweeping over large areas, and largely ignoring dates. He gave his attention to these, and the result is the present volume, which is in- valuable to the Bible Teacher, on account of its completeness and detailed accuracy.

Eminence was measured by scores on 3 quantitative variables and 3 qualitative variables. The quantitative variables were journal citation frequency, introductory psychology textbook citation frequency, and survey response frequency. The qualitative variables were National Academy of Sciences membership, election as American Psychological Association (APA) president or receipt of the APA Distinguished Scientific Contributions Award, and surname used as an eponym. The qualitative variables were quantified and combined with the other 3 quantitative variables to produce a composite score that was then used to construct a rank-ordered list of the most eminent psychologists of the 20th century. This technique helps students develop mature ways of thinking on a personal, social, and religious level. Robert Everett and Bruce Bramlett discuss Israel's problematic existence, raising numerous points that can lead to effective classroom discussions. Alan Davies describes his, course on anti-Semitism and presents several practical suggestions and instrumental techniques. John Roth offers a short biography of Elie Wiesel's J.ife, his writings, and his paradoxes. Norman Beck provides a model of how a Christian teaches the Christian Scriptures, offering guidelines that are highly supportive of and sympathetic to the Jewish-Christian dialogue.

The British Museum possesses eighty-two, which were purchased for the Trustees by Mr. E. A. Wallis Budge in 1888 ; the Berlin Museum has one hundred and sixty, a large number being fragments ; the Glzeh Museum has sixty ; and a few are in the hands of private persons. The discovery is said to have been accidentally made by a peasant woman when searching for antiquities in the loose sand and broken stones at the foot of the mountains behind the village, in which there are several interesting rock hewn tombs.

The seventh edition of my Booh of Genesis does not differ in any substantial respect from the preceding ones; I have only been obliged to make some alterations, due to the advance of knowledge, in certain matters relating to chronology and archae- ology. In consequence of the discovery in 1907 of a cuneiform Chronicle shewing that the Second Babylonian dynasty was in part contemporary with the First, the date of the First dynasty, and with it that of its sixth king, Hammurabi, have had to be lowered; and I have now, throughout the volume, altered the date of Hammurabi to B.C. 2130—2088. It seems also now that the astronomer Mahler's date for Ramses II., B.C. 1348 1281, which has been adopted by Professor Sayce, rests upon mistaken data, and that he mu3t be placed, with Petrie, Meyer, and Breasted, c. 1300—1234 B.C. : the probable date of the Exodus becomes thus c. 1230 B.C. I have revised the Chronological Table (opposite p. i of the Introduction), in accordance with the latest and best authorities ; and I have inserted two notes in the Addenda, intended to help readers to understand the diflBculties of early Egyptian and Babylonian chronology, and to explain to them the reasons for the divergent dates that have been proposed for the early periods of Egyptian and Babylonian history.
