Lutheran-Orthodox Dialogue Statement, 2011
15 th Session of the Lutheran–Orthodox Joint Commission Lutherstadt Wittenberg, Germany 31 May- 7 June 2011 The Mystery of the Church: The Nature, Attributes, and Mission of the Church The Lutheran-Orthodox Joint Commission met in Paphos, Cyprus in June 2008 and selected as the topic for its 15 th Plenary “The Mystery of the Church, E: Nature, Attributes, and Mission of the Church.” According to the mandate given to it in Paphos, the commission held a preparatory meeting in Skálholt, Iceland, from May 4-9, 2009 to explore these issues and to prepare a draft for the next plenary session. These papers were presented, followed by discussion: “The Nature of the Church” (N. Hoppe), “Lutheran Theology on the Nature of the Church” (K. Appold), “The Attributes of the Church: An Orthodox Approach” (K. Delikostantis), “Attributes and Marks of the Church” (R. Saarinen). The Commission held a second preparatory meeting in Bethlehem, Palestine, from May 25-31, 2010 to explore these issues and to prepare a draft for the next plenary session. The following papers were presented, followed by discussion: “No Church without Mission: The Mission of the Church in a Lutheran Perspective” (S. Dietrich), “The Service of the Church as a Service of Worship in the Everyday World” (K. Schwarz), “The Theological Character of the Mission of the Church” (C. Hovorun), “Cooperation and the Promotion of Unity: An Orthodox Understanding of Mission” (V. Ionita), and “The Mission of the Church Today: An Orthodox Perspective” (H.E. Metropolitan Makarios of Kenya). Discussion of these papers identified broad areas of agreement between the respective traditions on the above topics and pointed to a number of open questions and disagreements that would benefit from further clarification.

Here Luther studied, became a monk and lived in the Augustinian monastery. In the old heart of the city, the Merchants' Bridge (the Krämerbrücke) is still lined with houses and shops. Lutherstadt Eisleben Luther was born here in 1483. He returned many times throughout his live and, in a poetic close to the circle of life, died here in 1546. The town claims to have introduced the world's first 'heritage tourism': Martin Luther's Birth House ('Geburtshaus').

Wittenberg is located on Elbe River. It was a medieval center, famed as the birthplace of the Reformation. Wittenberg is of such importance in Luther's life that its official name is Lutherstadt- Wittenberg (Luther City Wittenberg). Day 3 Wittenberg (B,D) Sightseeing in Wittenberg includes entrance to the Lutherhalle, a museum of the Reformation. In the room occupied by Luther, preserved in its original condition, are displayed Luther's writings, prints, medals, Luther's university lectern, his pulpit from St Mary's Church and a number of valuable pictures. Also visit the Schlosskirche. From the church’s tower there are extensive views. It was to the wooden doors of this church that Luther nailed his 95 "Theses" in October 1517. The original doors were destroyed by fire during the Seven Years War; the present bronze doors, bearing the Latin text of the Theses, were installed in 1858.

Our English worship services began in May and concluded with flying colors on Reformation Day! The 13 assigned pastors arrived every two weeks like clockwork and came from 13 different states. They were guided, oriented, assisted, and supervised by our four Deputy Directors, who once again did a yeoman’s job of organizing our ministry and managing the WEM office located in the Wittenberg Information Center. In spite of the scaffolding and other construction issues, our pastors conducted the services so that the people who attended could celebrate their faith in Christ and rejoice in their connection to the Reformation – and both pastors and people were richly blessed! Overall, 2014 saw the third largest attendance in our 18 years of English services at Wittenberg. Only the Oberammergau Passion Play years of 2000 and 2010 had greater attendances than this year. We anticipate that the next three years could have record-setting attendances due to the Luther 500 Reformation Celebration in 2017. Though the Castle Church and the Town Church were closed much of the year, tourists still poured into Wittenberg to see the Luther sites. There was much disappointment at not being able to see the churches as they had expected. Skillfully, our pastors helped them through it by proclaiming the salvation of Christ and the faith of the Reformation.
