Large majority of futures trades in cross asset markets were computers/algorithms already back in 2016. Number now is even higher.
11 Who are the dominant players in the metal futures markets?
CME futures transaction data was compared for periods 1 Nov 2014-31 Oct 2016 (black values) vs 1 Nov 2016-31 Oct 2018 (red values) and shows that automation of trading is accelerating sharply.
Source: (Haynes & Roberts) Automated Trading in Futures Markets – Update #2
Abbreviations: ATS (automated trade), MAN (manual trade)
Copper saw largest increase in terms of trade automation. 70.2% of trades were generated by algos!
52% of all trades in copper were algos trading against algos.
Only 10% were manual traders interacting with manual traders down from 19%.
12 Where could we expect copper and gold prices to go from here?
The Refinitiv CTA matrix simulates over 40 trend models to determine potential buy and sell signals of algorithmic traders. We also assign a strength to each signal depending on the % of our models that trigger buy/sell activity. I.e. for LME copper $6248 is the next buy level where 57.5% of our models would buy copper.
13 Where could we expect copper and gold prices to go from here?
Gold has seen strong upward buy momentum and we are very close to more buy interest from CTAs/algos at $1829.

We have recorded sizable losses for both copper and zinc at the mine level which at the peak saw around 110 operations affected
The worst is now behind us with roughly a third of the suspended mines now back on line including many larger operations
We have cut around 350kt of zinc mine supply from our pre-COVID 2020 forecast And are now looking for a 2.6% decline in mine supply yoy
We have cut around 550kt of mine supply from our pre-COVID 2020 forecast And we are now looking for a 4% drop in mine supply yoy, a 800kt reduction

33 Key takeaways
• China copper concentrate imports grew y-o-y by 180,000 tonnes (Jan-May). This is due to re- stocking and industrial re-activation.
• Covid-19 impact on mining took a larger toll on Peru than its neighbour Chile. This is mainly due to stricter governmental policies in response to the pandemic.
• Copper concentrate grades and by-product content in concentrate have been slightly decreasing during the last few years.
