Bugs and Beasties of the Western Rhodopes (a photoguide to some lesser-known species) by Chris Gibson and Judith Poyser [email protected] Yagodina At Honeyguide, we aim to help you experience the full range of wildlife in the places we visit. Generally we start with birds, flowers and butterflies, but we don’t ignore 'other invertebrates'. In the western Rhodopes they are just so abundant and diverse that they are one of the abiding features of the area. While simply experiencing this diversity is sufficient for some, as naturalists many of us want to know more, and in particular to be able to give names to what we see. Therein lies the problem: especially in eastern Europe, there are few books covering the invertebrates in any comprehensive way. Hence this photoguide – while in no way can this be considered an ‘eastern Chinery’, it at least provides a taster of the rich invertebrate fauna you may encounter, based on a couple of Honeyguide holidays we have led in the western Rhodopes during June. We stayed most of the time in a tight area around Yagodina, and almost anything we saw could reasonably be expected to be seen almost anywhere around there in the right habitat. Most of the photos were taken in 2014, with a few additional ones from 2012. While these creatures have found their way into the lists of the holiday reports, relatively few have been accompanied by photos. We have attempted to name the species depicted, using the available books and the vast resources of the internet, but in many cases it has not been possible to be definitive and the identifications should be treated as a ‘best fit’. -

На долю Coleoptera приходится около 13% энтомофауны тундровой зоны, однако несколько семейств жуков сохраняют в высоких широтах значительное видовое раз нообразие и существенную ценотическую роль. В этом сообщении мы даем обзор циркумполярной колеоптерофауны Арктики. На основе оригинальных данных, литературных сведений и фондовых коллекционных материалов с использованием экстраполяций и аналогий отмечены особенности таксономического и экологического разнообразия подотрядов, серий и семейств Coleoptera, про анализированы широтнозональное распределение и северные пределы распространения видов, специфика адаптаций и ценотических связей. Ключевые слова: Арктика, жуки, природная зональность, видовое разнообразие, ареал, адаптации. Einleitung: Die Literatur über die Schmetterlingsfamilie der Glasflügler (Sesiidae) ist weit verstreut und mittlerweile auch bereits recht umfangreich. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurde der Versuch unternommen, die Weltliteratur der Sesiiden zusammenzutragen und aufzulisten. Grundlage dafür waren alle erschienenen Bände des Record of Zoological Literature, Vol. 1-6 (1864-1869), fortgesetzt als Zoological Record, Vol. 7-135 (1870-1998/99) sowie der Lepidopterorum Catalogus, Pars 31, Aegeriidae (DALLA TORRE & STRAND 1925). Darauf aufbauend wurden alle Querverweise in den Literaturverzeichnissen der zitierten Arbeiten geprüft. Aufgenommen wurden nicht nur Originalarbeiten über Sesiidae, sondern auch faunistische Arbeiten, die Angaben über Sesiidae enthalten, da gerade in solchen Arbeiten oft sehr wertvolle Freilandbeobachtungen und Hinweise zur Biologie der entsprechenden Arten zu finden sind. Auf diese Weise sind bisher 3750 Literaturzitate zusammengekommen. Von diesen konnten jedoch erst 1461 (39 %) überprüft werden. Das sind jene Arbeiten, die sich als Original oder Kopie in meiner Bibliothek befinden. -

Zusammenfassung Die vorliegende Arbeit gibt einen umfassenden Überblick über die im Land Brandenburg vorkom- menden Glasflügler. Für alle der 22 bislang nachgewiesenen Arten werden die Verbreitung ein- schließlich einer Rasterkarte dargestellt, eine kurze Beschreibung der Habitatansprüche und der Biologie gegeben sowie Abbildungen von lebenden und präparierten Faltern gebracht. 1. Einleitung Mit diesem Katalog, der alle 22 in Brandenburg einschließlich Berlin vorkommenden Arten der Glasflügler behandelt, sollen die wichtigsten Fakten über die jeweilige Art in gestraffter Form dargestellt werden und der aktuelle Kenntnisstand der Verbrei- tung auf Messtischblatt-Basis dokumentiert werden. Gleichzeitig soll mit dieser Ar- beit angeregt werden, vorhandene Lücken in der Verbreitung durch gezielte Suche zu schließen, wobei die beigefügten Fotos der Glasflügler eine Bestimmung der jeweili- gen Art unterstützen werden. Der Großteil aller Sesien-Nachweise erfolgte in den Ländern Brandenburg und Berlin in den Jahren nach 1990, maßgeblich gefördert durch die Verfügbarkeit und den Ge- brauch synthetischer Pheromone. -

Environnement Diversité des coléoptères dans le colza à Changins (VD) Stève Breitenmoser Agroscope, 1260 Nyon, Suisse Renseignements: Stève Breitenmoser, e-mail: [email protected] Matériel et méthodes La parcelle de colza d’hiver suivie se situe sur le domaine d’Agroscope Changins (parcelle n° 27) et sur le territoire de Prangins VD (fig. 1). Les coordonnées (CH-1903) au centre de la parcelle sont 507 820 / 138 930 pour une al- titude de 422 m. Elle est située en limite de la ville de Nyon au sud-ouest et du village de Prangins au sud et à l’est, dans une zone de grandes cultures ou terres asso- lées. Ces dernières comprennent les terres ouvertes et les prairies temporaires comprises dans la rotation des cultures (Vullioud 2005). La parcelle est de grande taille avec 291 ares. Le Bois de la Cour (chênaie à charme) de 10,5 ha se trouve à 350 m de la parcelle en question (bor- dure la plus proche). Suivi de la culture Il s’agit d’une culture conventionnelle de colza d’hiver, de la variété Avatar, semée le 24.08.2017, avec pour précédent cultural du blé tendre d’hiver. This study presents a synthesis of the current knowledge regarding the Lepidoptera fauna of Bucharest and the surrounding areas within a distance up to 50 kilometers around the Romanian capital. Data about the fauna composition are presented: the results of the research work beginning with the end of the 19th century, as well the results of the research work carried out in the last 15 years. The research initiated and done by the author himself, led to the identification of 180 species which were unknown in the past. Even if the natural habitats from this region have undergone through radical changes in the 20th century, the area still preserves a quite rich and interesting Lepidoptera fauna. The forests provide shelter to rich populations of the hawk moth Dolbina elegans A. Bang-Haas, 1912, one of the rarest Sphingidae in Europe, and some other species with high faunistical and zoogeographical value as: Noctua haywardi (Tams, 1926) (it is new record for the Romanian fauna from this area), Catocala dilecta (Hübner, 1808), Tarachidia candefacta (Hübner, [1831]), Chrysodeixis chalcites (Esper, [1789]), Aedia leucomelas (Linnaeus, 1758), and Hecatera cappa (Hübner, [1809]). We also present and discuss the current status of the protected Lepidoptera species from the surroundings of the Romanian capital for the first time. Résumé. Ce travail représente une synthèse des connaissances actuelles concernant la faune de lépidoptères de Bucarest et de ses zones limitrophes sur un rayon de 50 km autour de la capitale de la Roumanie. -

SCS Interim Standard For Natural Forest and Plantation Forest Management Certification in Lithuania Under the Forest Stewardship Council V. 3-0 December, 2014 A. INTRODUCTION This document contains the Interim Standard used by SCS Global Services (SCS) for conducting forest certification evaluations in Lithuania. The scope of these standards includes both natural and plantation forests. SCS consulted its interim standards for India in the creation of this interim standard for Lithuania. SCS also consulted Rainforest Alliance/SmartWood Interim Standard for Assessing Forest Management in Lithuania (02 September 2010), SGS Qualifor’s Forest Management Generic Standard for Lithuania (07 September 2009), and the FSC-US Forest Management Standard (V1-0; 08 July 2010) in the development of this Standard. In December 2014, the standard was updated due to stakeholder comments regarding conversion. B. STANDARD USE Conformance with this generic standard shall be determined by evaluating observed performance at the Forest Management Unit (FMU) level against each indicator of the standard, and in comparison with any performance threshold(s) specified for the indicator. The indicators here apply to all forests covered by the scope of the standard, including SLIMFs, unless otherwise specified. The default size for small SLIMFs is ≤100 ha. There are exceptions made in the standard for both small and low intensity SLIMFs. All forests larger than 100 ha or that do not meet the definition of a SLIMF shall be treated as a ‘Large FME’ in the SCS interim standard. See FSC-STD-01-003a for countries for which the definition of a small SLIMF is greater than 100 ha. -

JONES 135 Friern Road, East Dulwich, London SE22 0AZ [email protected] ABSTRACT Millions of males (and a few queens) of the black pavement ant, Lasius niger L., were washed up dead on the sandy shore at Trouville-sur-Mer, France in June 2002. With them were a number of beetle species, which must have formed part of a vast cloud of aerial plankton, later dashed into the English Channel by a thunderstorm. Sixty-nine species of Coleoptera were identified, along with four species of Hemiptera and one of Dermaptera. INTRODUCTION On Saturday 1st June 2002, I took a family holiday to a village near Caen in Normandy, France. The drive from Calais was as straightforward as is all driving through northern France, but it was remarkable for the incredible number of flying insects continually crashing into the windscreen. The day was sunny, warm and humid and very many insects were on the wing. By the end of our journey, the front of the car was completely discoloured by invertebrate innards and the car was all but out of screen-wash. The only other time I can remember such an experience was driving on one of the state highways in Florida, one hot humid afternoon some years ago, shortly before a tropical storm. Sure enough, on that evening of 1st June a dramatic lightning show and thunderstorm swept in along the Normandy coast. At our gıˆte, about 15 km south of the Channel, we missed most of the booming storm that lit up the night sky in the distance, but there was torrential rain for short periods that night, enough to clean the car a little. -

GROWN IN EASTERN COLORADO Industrial hemp was found to support a diverse complex of arthropods in the surveys of hemp fields in eastern Colorado. Seventy-three families of arthropods were collected from hemp grown in eight counties in Colorado in 2016, 2017, and 2018. Other important groups found in collections were of the order Diptera, Coleoptera, and Hemiptera. The arthropods present in fields had a range of association with the crop and included herbivores, natural enemies, pollen feeders, and incidental species. Hemp cultivars grown for seed and fiber had higher insect species richness compared to hemp grown for cannabidiol (CBD). This observational field survey of hemp serves as the first checklist of arthropods associated with the crop in eastern Colorado. Emerging key pests of the crop that are described include: corn earworm (Helicoverpa zea (Boddie)), hemp russet mite (Aculops cannibicola (Farkas)), cannabis aphid (Phorodon cannabis (Passerini)), and Eurasian hemp borer (Grapholita delineana (Walker)). Local outbreaks of several species of grasshoppers were observed and produced significant crop injury, particularly twostriped grasshopper (Melanoplus bivittatus (Say)). Approximately half (46%) of the arthropods collected in sweep net samples during the three year sampling period were categorized as predators, natural enemies of arthropods.
