This research took place in Elassona basin, in Thessaly, where two lignite deposits have been found, but the exploitation of them has not started yet. Multiple criteria have been analysed (geological, hydrogeo- logical, hydrological, hydrochemical etc) with the purpose of estimating the changes that will be caused during the mining activities in the area. The difficulties that the surface and groundwater cause to the lignite ex- ploitation are also examined. In the present study, an ensemble neural network approach is applied to predict the final structural damage of an 8-storey reinforced concrete frame under real and artificial ground motion sequences. Successive earthquakes con- sisted of two seismic events are utilised. We considered 16 well-known ground motion intensity measures and the structural damage that occurred by the first earthquake as the features of the machine-learning problem, while the final structural damage was the target. After the first seismic events and after the seismic sequences, both actual values of damage indices are calcu- lated through nonlinear time history analysis. The machine-learning model is trained using the dataset generated from artificial sequences.

They are traditionally divided into several subparallel, c. NNW-SSE trending tectono-stratigraphic zones. These zones are grouped into two large units, namely the External Hellenides (Hellenide foreland) in the west and the Internal Hellenides (Hellenide hinterland) in the east. The External Hellenides comprise the Paxon, Ionian and Gavrovo-Tripolis Zones, which are dominated by Mesozoic and Cainozoic cover rocks. The Pelagonian Zone, the Attico-Cycladic Massif, the Vardar Zone, the Serbo-Macedonian Massif and the Rhodope Massif (from west to east) form the Internal Hellenides. They are characterised by abundant occurrences of crystalline basement. The Pelagonian Zone and the Vardar Zone in Greece represent the western part of the Internal Hellenides. While the Pelagonian Zone comprises predominantly crystalline basement and sedimentary cover rocks, the Vardar Zone has long been regarded as an ophiolite-decorated suture zone separating the Pelagonian Zone from the Serbo-Macedonian Massif to the east. In order to identify the major crust-forming episodes and to improve the understanding of the evolutionary history of this region, felsic basement rocks from both the Pelagonian Zone and the Vardar Zone were dated, with the main focus being on the Pelagonian Zone.

    SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC TRANSFORMATIONS IN RURAL THessALY, 1850–1940 Fenia Lekka, Dina Moustani and George Gassias Abstract: This article is part of a research project on the transformations that took place between 1850 and 1940 in the province of Thessaly, an extensive rural region of the Balkan Peninsula. It focuses on the changes in the economic, social and demographic levels, highlighting the interrelation of these changes in rural Thessaly from the promulgation of the Land Law (1858) under the Ottoman Tanzimat reforms to the annexation of Thessaly and the implementation of extensive land reforms in the 1920s by the Greek state. Studies concerning the – predominantly rural – province of Thessaly during the nineteenth century mostly consider its annexation in 1881 by Greece as a milestone in the transfer of landed property from the Ottoman Empire to the Greek Kingdom, the acquisition of Ottoman landed estates by capitalists from the Greek diaspora from 1878 to 1881 being an essential element in this narrative. This article shall focus, firstly, on this transition, suggesting that the annexation was – in fact – a process that lasted for over a decade in terms of the province’s demographic transformation, which concluded with – as well as brought about – the gradual religious homogenisation of the population of Thessaly. Secondly, we shall study the role and profile of landowners, a process that led us to the realisation that even when the 1917 land reform was announced, a significant number ofM uslims were still among the owners of Thessalian estates, whereas Greek landowners belonging to or descending from the circle of capitalists of the Greek diaspora were relatively few in number.

This led to a rapid cooling of relations between the Greek and German governments. We compile a new index of public acrimony between Germany and Greece based on newspaper reports and internet search terms. This information is combined with historical maps on German war crimes during the occupation between 1941 and 1944. During months of open conflict between German and Greek politicians, German car sales fell markedly more than those of cars from other countries. This was especially true in areas affected by German reprisals during World War II: areas where German troops committed massacres and destroyed entire villages curtailed their purchases of German cars to a greater extent during conflict months than other parts of Greece. We conclude that cultural aversion was a key determinant of purchasing behavior, and that memories of past conflict can affect economic choices in a time-varying fashion. These findings are compatible with behavioral models emphasizing the importance of salience for individual decision- making.
