  • FIFTH SUNDAY of EASTER May 2, 2021
2003 Hassert Blvd., Naperville, IL 60564 ▪ 630.922.0081 ▪ www.hscc.us • Follow us on FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER May 2, 2021 We pray for those who are sick. May God restore them to good health. We also pray for those who have died especially Nancy Goetter, mother of Jennifer Gutke, Ronald Kisiel, husband of Mabel Kisiel, and Ann Leahey, mother of Linda Roberts. May they be blessed with eternal life. May Crowning at all Masses on May 15/16 What is a May Crowning? May Crowning is a traditional ritual held during the month of May. It is a procession to the Blessed Mother statue and crowned with a wreath of flowers honoring Mary as “the Queen of May.” Why a Crowning? The queen symbol was attributed to Mary because she was a perfect follower of Christ, who is the absolute “crown” of creation. She is the Mother of the Son of God, who is the messianic King. Mary is the Mother of Christ. How to celebrate Mary at home? Create a Mary Garden which is a small outdoor sacred garden enclosing a statue of the Virgin Mary. Make a May Altar by placing a statue of Mary, a candle, and fresh or paper flowers on a table. Pray the Rosary during the month of May. HOLIEST FLOWER VINES, BRANCHES, AND FRUIT Mary is the lily in God’s garden. Few activities are as disappointing as cultivating garden plants, watering them, and ensuring that they receive —St. Bridget of Sweden sunlight and nutrients, only to receive one or two vegetables or flowers to show for all the effort.

  • Atlanta Regional Commission Community Gardening Manual
Atlanta Regional Commission Community Gardening Manual Created by The Atlanta Urban Gardening Program Dear Readers: The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension/The Atlanta Urban Gardening Program (AUGP) would like to thank the Federation of Southern Cooperatives/Land Assistance Fund and the Atlanta Regional Commission for creating the Senior Community Garden Initiative and inviting us to partner with them to establish 11 community gardens across metro Atlanta. We are also deeply grateful to Kaiser Permanente for their support of the initiative. The focus of these gardens was two-fold: to provide fresh vegetables within the community to help increase access to fresh produce among older adults and to provide a place for social interaction. Because of their excitement and the knowledge and skills they gained, many garden participants have started gardening at home and getting more exercise in the process. As president of the American Community Gardening Association and coordinator of the Atlanta Urban Gardening Program, I believe that community gardening and inner-city agriculture can play a major role in addressing some of our health issues and disparities in this country. The American Community Gardening Association has always been a strong advocate for community gardening as ways to strengthen communities. The association knows know that through community gardening, partici- pants learn much more than how to grow vegetables. They learn how to sustain themselves and their communities to have a happier, cleaner, healthier, productive future in all aspects of their lives. Community gardening is not just about teaching people how to grow something to eat, but about growing as people and expanding their minds; all the time wanting more for themselves and their communities.

Next year, 2015, marks ten years since the Publications Committee, with the advice and support of the development staff, launched the Friends of the Press, an effort dedicated to raising money to be used solely for bringing new titles into print. The society is particularly grateful to H. Thomas Howell, past committee chair, for his unwavering support of our work and for his exemplary generosity. The committee is pleased to announce two new titles funded through the Friends of the Press. Rebecca Seib and Helen C. Rountree’s forthcoming Indians of Southern Maryland, offers a highly readable account of the culture and history of Maryland’s native people, from prehistory to the early twenty-first century. The authors, both cultural anthropologists with training in history, have written an objective, reliable source for the general public, modern Maryland Indians, schoolteachers, and scholars.

NORTH SHORE COMMUNITY GARDEN S OCIETY ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2017 REPORTS PRESIDENT’S ANNUAL REPORT Since its inception 8 years ago, the North Shore Community Garden Society has grown from one garden to seven gardens. All of this has been done with the dedication of a few volunteers serving on the board and the wonderful folks who work so hard as garden coordinators. Since volunteering to serve as president in November of 2015, I have had a lot of learning to do. I do not have a community garden plot but I had been aware of the society for many years. I was fortunate to take over from a president who developed a lot of supporting documents and made sure that the next person could benefit from her knowledge and experience. I was also fortunate that there were board members and garden coordinators with a long history in the gardens to answer questions and point the way when I needed guidance. In the spring, we applied for and received a Living City grant from the City of North Vancouver to make some renovations to the Queen Mary Community Garden. Dianna Allen did a fabulous job managing this project. The garden now has new gates that work properly replacing the old ones which were held together with bike inner tubes. Rotting boards and posts were replaced, compost bins were repaired, and new soil was added to stop the soil from leeching downward into other plots. This spring, the shed and picnic table will be power washed and painted, the last of the big projects funded by the grant.

Planting a Mary Garden Inspiration and Ideas FAMILYROSARY.ORG Welcome to Our Family In addition to longer days, sunshine, and school graduations, spring is time for a one-of-a- kind event: the Museum of Family Prayer’s annual Mary Garden Contest. Gardeners, gardener “wanna-be’s,” and families young and old are invited to cultivate and care for gardens dedicated to the Mother of God. What is a Mary Garden? Traditionally, it is an enclosed garden of flowers and herbs whose names speak of Our Lady. These gardens, which appeared in Europe as early as the Middle Ages, are typically planted around a statue of Mary, creating a peaceful space for prayer. Since we welcome gardens of all shapes and sizes, we hope you and your family will be creative as you plan your Mary Garden together and take this opportunity to begin or deepen a habit of family prayer. You can learn more about this longstanding tradition, find practical advice for creating your own Mary Garden, and submit photographs of your work on the Museum of Family Prayer’s website. As new life springs forth in creation, let us entrust our families to Mary, the Mother of Our Hope. May God bless you and your family! A Little History Servant of God Patrick Peyton began his ministry in 1942 with the goal of building family unity through daily prayer of the Rosary. Inspired by his own father who had a deep devotion to family prayer, praying the Rosary became the foundation for the life of Father Peyton (1909-92).
