After numerous recordings devoted to less well known figures such as Johann Christian Bach, Caldara and Porpora, I felt a need that was as much physical as musical to return to this great composer. This release focuses on his motets for contralto voice, thereby rounding off – after discs of his cantatas and opera arias – a three-part set of recordings of music by the Red Priest. His celebrated Stabat Mater is one of the great classics of the countertenor reper toire, but I also very much wanted to record the motet Longe mala, umbrae, terrores, a piece that I find absolutely fascinating. This disc is a milestone for me, because it is the first time I have made a recording with my own ensemble Artaserse in a fuller, more orchestral line-up. It was an exciting experience, both on the musical and on the personal level, to direct so many musicians and sing at the same time. I would like to thank all the musicians who took part for their talent, patience and dedication, and I hope that this recording will mark the beginning of a new direction in my musical career.

  • Louise De Marillac and the Spirituality of the Daughters of Charity
Vincentiana, July-September 2012 Louise de Marillac and the Spirituality of the Daughters of Charity Meeting of Provincial Directors Sr. Antoinette Marie Hance, D.C. Introduction Louise de Marillac is an extraordinary woman and a great mystic, and to speak of her and her spirituality is, in a certain sense, to marvel anew at God’s loving plan for humanity, for the Church, for persons living in poverty, and for God’s preference for the lowly and humble of heart. Yes, God always surprises us, and in taking a new look at the life of Louise de Marillac, and dwelling on the spirituality shared with the fi rst Sisters, we see how God constantly borrows from our ways to reveal His love. I’m going to begin by letting St. Vincent speak. On July 24, 1660, two months before his death, he exhorted the fi rst Sisters as follows: “Sisters, after the example of your good mother, take the resolution to work at becoming holy and to detach yourselves from what displeases God in you” 1 . “After the example of your good Mother”. I think that looking at Louise to learn from her how to work at making ourselves holy according to God’s plan for us, and to detach ourselves from what displeases God, is characteristic of a spirituality: proposing a special path of holiness, a particular way of following Christ. The 350th anniversary of the deaths of Vincent de Paul and Louise de Marillac was certainly a special opportunity to discover Louise or to get to know her better.

SOLEMNITY OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE HOLY MASS AND INDUCTION OF MEMBERS OF SAINT JUAN DIEGO GUILD CHURCH OF THE SHRINE OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE LA CROSSE, WISCONSIN DECEMBER 12, 2008 Zec 2:14-17 Jdt 13:18bcde, 19 Rv 11:19a; 12:1-6a, 10ab Lk 1:39-47 HOMILY Praised be Jesus Christ, now and for ever. Amen. 1. When the Blessed Virgin Mary went to visit her cousin Elizabeth, miraculously pregnant with Saint John the Baptist, both Elizabeth and John the Baptist, in her womb, recognized the great mystery in their midst. Saint Elizabeth, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, cried out: And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? (Gospel). Saint John the Baptist, the last of the prophets and the herald of Our Savior at His coming, began already His divinely-given mission by leaping for joy in His mother’s womb. Saint Elizabeth and Saint John the Baptist recognized the fulfillment of God’s promise to become one with us, to dwell with us, so that we might be His chosen sons and daughters always (cf. Reading I). 2. It is the mystery of God’s dwelling with us in His only-begotten Son, conceived in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary, that Our Lady of Guadalupe proclaimed from the moment of her first apparition to Saint Juan Diego on December 9th of 1531. It is the same mystery of God’s immeasurable mercy and love toward us that Our Lady of Guadalupe announced in each of her apparitions over the four days from December 9th to 12th.

  • Vincentian II
Topic 20: Vincentian Spirituality: Practical Charity, Part 2 Overview: St. Louise de Marillac became a companion to St. Vincent. They complemented each other with two very different personalities and skill-sets. Louise was the head person while Vincent was the heart person. What they shared in common was conversion of heart that came through the experience of the poor. Together, they founded of the Daughters of Charity, a radical break with previous forms of religious life for women. The Daughters became “Nuns in the World,” and they became the model for all subsequent forms of active religious life for women. Elizabeth Ann Seton brought the spirit and way of life of Vincent and Louise to America. She founded the Sisters of Charity, who expressed the virtue of charity through education, especially of the poor, ignorant, and immigrants. Louise de Marillac • Louise came into Vincent’s life after his conversion. • Louise’s early life was troubled. She never knew her mother. Her health was fragile. Her husband died in 1625 after a prolonged illness. The limitations of her childhood were always a source of anguish for her. This series of experiences plunged her into a dark night of the soul. • Vincent became a spiritual guide for her in dealing with her discouragement. Her friendship and collaboration with Vincent became a healing force in her life. Vincent was always there to support her through trials and tribulations. • Vincent helped her to become less reasoned and more spontaneous. • Her service to the poor and involvement with the Confraternities of Charity gradually cured her depressed spirit.

2003 Hassert Blvd., Naperville, IL 60564 ▪ 630.922.0081 ▪ www.hscc.us • Follow us on FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER May 2, 2021 We pray for those who are sick. May God restore them to good health. We also pray for those who have died especially Nancy Goetter, mother of Jennifer Gutke, Ronald Kisiel, husband of Mabel Kisiel, and Ann Leahey, mother of Linda Roberts. May they be blessed with eternal life. May Crowning at all Masses on May 15/16 What is a May Crowning? May Crowning is a traditional ritual held during the month of May. It is a procession to the Blessed Mother statue and crowned with a wreath of flowers honoring Mary as “the Queen of May.” Why a Crowning? The queen symbol was attributed to Mary because she was a perfect follower of Christ, who is the absolute “crown” of creation. She is the Mother of the Son of God, who is the messianic King. Mary is the Mother of Christ. How to celebrate Mary at home? Create a Mary Garden which is a small outdoor sacred garden enclosing a statue of the Virgin Mary. Make a May Altar by placing a statue of Mary, a candle, and fresh or paper flowers on a table. Pray the Rosary during the month of May. HOLIEST FLOWER VINES, BRANCHES, AND FRUIT Mary is the lily in God’s garden. Few activities are as disappointing as cultivating garden plants, watering them, and ensuring that they receive —St. Bridget of Sweden sunlight and nutrients, only to receive one or two vegetables or flowers to show for all the effort.

The Armor of Faith Topic Summary: Miracles and Faith Our Lady of Guadalupe Our Lady of Guadalupe Public Domain Introduction [Greeting:] → Welcome to “The Armor of Faith,” a show where we hope to bring our listeners closer to the Word of God and the blessings we receive through living in the fullness of the Catholic faith. My name is Doug and I will be your host as we discuss the blessings of the Church Christ built upon Peter. I am joined today by my panel: [names] Helen is a Dominican, which is also known as the Order of Preachers, and she is engaged in youth catechesis and music ministry at Saint Philip Benizi Catholic Mission in Cedaredge, Colorado. Sharon is our token cradle Catholic, and I am simply here to ask questions, because it is so much easier to ask questions than to have to actually answer them. That burden goes to our panelists, so welcome to our panelists as well as to our listeners. Let us open with a prayer: Heavenly Father, we lift up our hearts in thanks and praise for this opportunity to open and share your Holy Word this day. We pray that You are with us and all our listeners as we share with one another the blessings of faith. We pray You will grant us wisdom and understanding as we seek to learn Your Holy Truth. In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit we pray. Discussion: Last time, we discussed the story of the man born blind as recounted in John 9.
