Sunday 7th October 2018 Nineteenth Sunday after Trinity Highlights: 1918 Anniversaries and Music

Our 100 days of Commemoration of WWI continues, leading up to the centenary of the Armistice on 11th November. This Sunday also happens to be the exact centenary of the death of the composer C. H. H. Parry, who died aged 70 in the 1918 influenza epidemic. So at the Royal Marines Band Service Memorial Service this morning, the anthem will be ‘Blest pair of sirens’, Parry’s glorious setting of John Milton’s ‘Ode at a Solemn Musick.’ And at the evening Eucharist one of the hymns will be ‘Dear Lord and Father,’ set to Parry’s much loved tune called ‘Repton’ (originally written for his 1888 oratorio ‘Judith’ – which is being revived at the South Bank next year).

Music by two composers who died on active service in 1918 is also being played before the RMBS service: Cecil Coles served in WWI as Bandmaster for Queen Victoria’s Rifles; he was killed by sniper fire while helping to recover casualties on 26th April 1918. The organist and composer Ernest Farrar had studied under Stanford and taught Gustav Holst; he enlisted with the Grenadier Guards in 1915, and died in the Battle of Épehy Ronssoy on 18th September 1918 – he had been at the Front for two days.

Parry’s music will feature in the concert the is giving at St Mary’s Portchester on Friday 12th October 7.30pm, when ‘I was glad’ will feature in the programme.

Looking further ahead: on Monday 5th November, the anthem will be ‘In Paradisum’ by Edward Naylor, written in 1914 when he was Organist at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, in response to the news of the first casualties, including former students, in August 1914. And on Tuesday 6th November, the canticles at Evensong will be the setting by William Browne, who had been at Clare College, Cambridge, and a close friend of Rupert Brooke. He was killed in action in the Dardanelles in 1915 at the age of 26. The anthem on this day will be ‘Expectans expectavi’ by Charles Wood, setting words by the Scottish war poet C. H. Sorley, son of a colleague of Wood’s, who was killed on 13th October 1915.
