Chorister outreach model -Based on the Truro model / Sing Up funding -3 schools per term joining together to perform a concert in the cathedral -Lichfield Cathedral Young Voices – Saturday morning choir -Multiple visits to schools Sacred Space Conference 2018 – ‘Teaching the world to sing’ Where we are now… Significant funding from our local Music Education Hub (the North- West Midlands Education Hub) -Enables us to engage with many more schools -Enables us to be more inventive with our projects -Grown into work with secondary schools – in many ways it is easy to engage primary schools with singing, but not secondaries in the same way Sacred Space Conference 2018 – ‘Teaching the world to sing’ Thinking outside the box… -Engaging with the diocese – Inspire project / education days -Noye’s Fludde – Lichfield Festival/Amahl and the Night Visitors -Summer school – Diocese/local schools/Cathedral School -Road shows -SEN projects/Emotional Behavioural Unit -Young Voices/Youth Voices/Ladies who Lark (Thursday shift/singing evensong) -Schools buying in (currently outside the Diocese only) -Friday Afternoons Project Sacred Space Conference 2018 – ‘Teaching the world to sing’ Repertoire… -Becoming increasingly brave with what repertoire we use -New commission was a real challenge but feedback was excellent -Variety -Children that come to the cathedral attend evensong and we almost always have feedback about that © Ash Mills Sacred Space Conference 2018 – ‘Teaching the world to sing’ Feedback… Evaluation from a Headteacher has been involved with the project several times…. • “The greatest impact for my school was on the engagement of the most reluctant pupils. Following the invitation to take part in the project I decided to make it compulsory for Year 5 and Year 6 both of which have a high level of boys in particular that would not have taken part by choice. The performance proved to me that this was the right decision. The boys totally engaged and actually threw themselves into this experience. The next day in school I spoke to some of these children who told me the pleasure they got from the experience and that it was something they will remember for the rest of their lives. To give these children such as an experience was so valuable. It will hopefully encourage them to take risks regarding opportunities that come their way. • Participation in evensong was a special part of the experience. The staff and the children found this a fascinating and spiritually moving experience. • This project is so important in both the musical and spiritual development of the children.     REACHING OUT A celebration of the work of the Choir Schools’ Association The Choir Schools’ Association represents 46 schools attached to cathedrals, churches and college chapels educating some 25,000 children. A further 13 cathedral foundations, who draw their choristers from local schools, hold associate membership. In total CSA members look after nearly 1700 boy and girl choristers. Some schools cater for children up to 13. Others are junior schools attached to senior schools through to 18. Many are Church of England but the Roman Catholic, Scottish and Welsh churches are all represented. Most choir schools are independent but five of the country’s finest maintained schools are CSA members. Being a chorister is a huge commitment for children and parents alike. In exchange for their singing they receive an excellent musical training and first-class academic and all-round education. They acquire self- discipline and a passion for music which stay with them for the rest of their lives. The Rt Revd Stephen Conway is the Area, or Suffragan, Bishop of Ramsbury, in the Diocese of Salisbury, which he is currently ‘minding’ as there is also an ‘episcopal interregnum’ in that diocese. Bishop Stephen was trained at Westcott House here in Cambridge, and until he became Bishop of Ramsbury in 2006 served all his ministry in the Diocese of Durham, in two curacies, then as a Parish Priest, as Director of Ordinands and Bishop’s Chaplain, and finally as an Archdeacon.

One hundred years ago, the then headmaster of St Paul’s Cathedral Choir School, Reverend R H Couchman, joined his colleagues from King’s College School, Cambridge and Westminster Abbey Choir School to consider the sustainability of choir schools in the light of rigorous inspections of independent schools and regulations governing the employment of children being introduced under the terms of the Fisher Education Act. Although cathedral choristers were quickly exempted from the new employment legislation, the meeting led to the formation of the CSA, and Couchman was its honorary secretary until his retirement in 1937.     The History of the Minster School I. Introduction The present Southwell Minster School came into being in September 1976 as an 11-18, co- educational comprehensive. One of its "ancestors" was a grammar school, established in the Middle Ages. No precise date can be given to the grammar school's foundation. It was always a small school - on a number of occasions in danger of ceasing to exist. It did not develop a reputation for producing pupils who became household names, nor did it set any trends in education. Yet, through descent from the Grammar School, the Minster School is part of a line of development which may go back further than that represented by any other English school now outside the private sector. And, precisely because the Grammar School, and the other ancestors of the modern comprehensive, were not too much out of the ordinary, their story is the more important. II. The Grammar School 1. The Origins of the Grammar School The earliest schools were linked to a monastery, cathedral or other large church, such as the Minster at Southwell. Such "grammar" schools were at first very small - made up of perhaps less than twenty boys. Pupils probably started to attend between the ages of nine and twelve. Southwell's grammar school may have been created at the same time as its Minster - to provide education for Minster choristers. The Minster is thought to have been founded soon after the Saxon King Edwy gave lands in Southwell to Oscetel, Archbishop of York, in a charter dating from between 955 and 959.

    Lichfield Cathedral School STATEMENT OF BOARDING PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE Introduction The School was re-founded in 1942 (as St Chad’s Cathedral School) principally as a boarding school for the choristers of Lichfield Cathedral. However, non-chorister pupils have been admitted from the beginning. Until 1981 the School was owned and governed by the Dean and Chapter of the Cathedral. However, since that date it has been a fully independent, coeducational preparatory school, known as Lichfield Cathedral School, until the decision was taken to move into secondary education in 2005. The school opened the Sixth Form in September 2010. Boys and girls are admitted at any time from the age of 3, choosing either to move on to other Schools at age 11, 13 or 16, or remain at the Cathedral School for their secondary education. There are presently 460 children in the School aged 3 – 18. School Mission Statement Lichfield Cathedral School is committed to creating and maintaining an educational environment which nurtures, nourishes and stimulates young minds and talents; where children may gain a thorough academic foundation; and where daily life is conducted according to Christian values and the experience of Christian worship. The School is determined to provide a secure and ordered framework within which children and young people may grow in self-esteem and confidence, discover the riches of successful participation and achievement, and develop a spirit of generosity and service to the wider community. Boarding at Lichfield Lichfield Cathedral School currently provides a maximum of 24 boarding places for boys aged 8 – 13 accommodated within the Grade 1 listed building known as The Palace in the Cathedral Close.

Data are collected from all 42 Church of England cathedrals, and from Westminster Abbey, in the annual cathedral statistics survey. Among other things, the survey asks about attendance at Sunday and midweek services; Easter and Christmas services; school visits; baptisms, marriages, and funerals; musical activities and volunteering. For reference, the survey form and guidance notes can be found in the appendix. Attendance (pages 7 to 11) • 37,000 people per week (82% adults and 18% children aged under 16) were reported attending cathedral services in 2016. This remains the same as in 2015, but is an increase of 17% from 31,600 in 2006. • Community roll increased by 2% from 15,900 in 2015 to 16,200 in 2016; there was a slight decline of 1% from 16,300 in 2006.

  • The Early History of Kells St. Peter's
    The Early History of Kells St. Peter’s By the winter of 1908 to 1909 there were already 140 houses built on the Kells Estate which then fell within the boundaries of Christ Church. That parish therefore began holding “Cottage Services” 1at an un-recorded location on the estate. In the 21st century these would be known as House Groups or a Church Plant. In November 1918 these moved into the Mid Street Rooms. From 20th October 1920 these services were being held in a separate Mission Building, with its own Altar, Organ and general Church set-up. This was an old Army Hut on the site of the present Vicarage (next to the 1939 Church). This Mission Church was not actually licensed until 30th July 19342. The early ministry was provided part time by Rev James Watt, Curate of Christ Church then Captain Parry of the Church Army in 1923. On 22nd November 1931 Revd Edward Ralph Bickersteth3 was appointed curate of Christ Church (his first curacy was at Christ Church, Liverpool) with his primary responsibility being Kells. In November 1934 Revd Harry George Green became Curate4 with the sole responsibility of Kells. He was then licensed as first Vicar of the new Parish of Kells on 8th December 19355. As early as 1931 the Mission Hall is referenced as St. Peter’s. Revd Green left in August 1943 to Warminster, Christ Church and Canon of Salisbury Cathedral. He retired to Berkhamstead. The Parish of Kells was created by Order in Council dated 12th November 19356. For the sake of completeness it is worth recording that the Mission Hall was demolished in the Summer of 1939 to allow the new Church to be completed.
