We hope that you will enjoy reading about all our major events/activities that took place before the summer months. This year’s May Fayre took place on a very hot summer’s May Fayre day but still proved to be a very popular afternoon out for lots of happy people. The day was filled with fabulous entertainment, lots of fun and games for the whole family, great food, and some wonderful prizes in the grand raffle. Talented performers took to the stage featuring the London School of Ballet, the Falcon School, the Junior & Senior Schools, and the music group AcousThree. Children also had the opportunity to explore the inside of a police car and a fire engine; enjoying the numerous sounds from their sirens. A very big thank you to all who worked so hard at making this another successful event. Handel’s Messiah On Saturday 1 April the Cathedral hosted a wonderful performance of Handel’s Messiah with our magnificent singers having had less than three hours rehearsal time during the afternoon. A huge thank you to our conductor, The Revd. Canon Anthony Stidolph, to our amazing accompanist Guy Creen, and of course to all those who heartily sang during the performance. At the beginning of Lent a confirmation group from the Diocese of Uppsala, part of the Church of Sweden, visited the Cathedral as part of a week- long trip to Cyprus. While staying in Nicosia they had the opportunity to visit the Archbishopric and Ayios Ioannis Cathedral; including a wonder around the Icon Museum. Their trip ended with an enjoyable Cypriot meze in the old town. Diocesan Synod 2017 took place 6-10 February. We were honoured, the Sunday after Synod, to have some visiting clergy fro m around our Diocese sharing in our worship. At the same service the new accessible toilet was blessed and the original font (brought back to the Cathedral from St George-in-the-Forest) rededicated by The Very Revd. Dr. James Atwell, retired Dean of Winchester Cathedral. Holy Week and the Easter Triduum This year saw the Cathedral journey through a full Holy Week and Easter Triduum experience. Our Palm Sunday procession began Holy Week which included a contemplative Taize Service, Bible Study, and Stations of the Cross. The Easter Triduum comprised the traditional liturgy for Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, the Easter Vigil, and the first Mass of Easter. Palm crosses for Exeter Every year some of the congregation gather to make palm crosses for one of our link dioceses, the Diocese of Exeter. Some found the making-process a lot easier than others. The Gathering This year’s Archidiaconal Gathering Service took place on Saturday, 20 May, with representatives of all the parishes on the island attending the service. Each parish provided a cake symbolizing the theme of diversity in their respective faith communities. Not only did the cakes look stunning, they also tasted pretty good too Many thanks to all who helped in the organization of this service; especially to Archdeacon John Holdsworth for his on-going support and ministry. Choral Evensong, Monday 23 October @ 6pm, led by Bishop Michael Lewis and Padre Brian Elliot Featuring the choir of Portsmouth Cathedral Throughout the year the Cathedral congregation strives to play an active role in many charities within the community and city of Nicosia. Over the Christmas period the congregation contributes to the Christmas parties at both the Nicosia Mercy Centre and the Kofinou Refugee Camp. Two of our annual fundraisers (May Fayre & Swimathon) donate a percentage of their proceeds to a chosen charity. This year’s May Fayre made a contribution to Caritas and their work with refugees and asylum seekers. Social Outreach In July we launched a new outreach ministry by providing a free cooked meal on the first Monday of each month for refugees and others in need. To date we have between 30 and 40 people attending each month. Many thanks to all our volunteers, Nicosia International Church, and the Women’s Friendship Group who have joined us in this new venture. Throughout the year we enjoy various social evenings with good food and lovely fellowship. Every year we are involved in the Women’s World Day of Prayer. This year the service, focusing on the Philippines, was held at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Paphos Gate. St. Paul’s Cathedral Nicosia .
