Misty took the recovered artifacts to Dr. Annabelle Riggs, who was excavating a viking burial site and inadvertently awakened the dead vikings with one the artifacts. Misty battled the vikings and was soon joined by , who sensed the commotion. When the fight was over, Valkyrie agreed to take Annabelle and Misty to Asgardia to seek council on the matter. [1] The mercenaries kidnapped Dani Moonstar and brought her to Caroline Le Fay, who wanted to become a Valkyrie like Dani. In Asgardia, the All-Mother explained to Valkyrie, Misty, and Annabelle that the dead Vikings signalled the return of the Doom Maidens: corrupted Valkyries, who come to fill the void left by Valkyrie's inability to assemble a new Valkyrior. , aware of the Doom Maidens' return, brought Hippolyta from the Underworld to help set things right. [2] The All-Mother teleported Valkyrie, Misty, Annabelle, and Hippolyta to Harrowpoint Island, Washington, where Caroline le Fey had taken Dani Moonstar to use her in a ritual to summon the Doom Maidens. Once inside le Fey's chamber, the heroes discovered that the Doom Maidens had already arrived. During the subsequent battle, Annabelle managed to free Dani before the Doom Maidens halted their fighting, recognizing Valkyrie as their "sister". [3] The heroes retreated to Misty's safe house in New York City as the Doommaidens gave chase. There, Valkyrie had a from long ago of herself leading an attack on . Valkyrie decided to take Dani and Hippolyta and lead the Doommaidens away from the city, while Misty and Annabelle called Heroes for Hire for help. [4] Age of Ultron. (Logan) and (Sue Storm) tried to assassinate Ultron's creator, Henry Pym to prevent Ultron from taking over the world. In the divergent timeline created by Pym's death, Morgan le Fay and her husband Dr. Doom conquered half the planet. Le Fey and Doom's daughter, Caroline, recruited Hippolyta to seek revenge for abandoning her as a child. In , Caroline and Hippolyta discovered that Doom had died and was replaced by , Hippolyta's father. Hippolyta defeated Ares and took back command of the Amazons, who were subdued by him. [5] Post-Age of Ultron. In Descanso de Deus, Brazil, Valkyrie, Hippolyta, and Moonstar ascended to a mountaintop mesa littered with stone carvings that mark an arena. They soon confronted Caroline Le Fay, Mr. Raven, and the Doom Maidens astride their demonic dragons, which douse the three with hellfire before Hippolyta heaves a stone carving at one of the dragons, knocking it out of the sky. The Doom Maidens dismount and attack, and Valkyrie, Hippolyta, and Moonstar fended them off before realizing that they were outnumbered. Moments later, Misty and Annabelle arrived on the scene with a battalion of superheroes, including Hellcat, Tigra, Black Cat, Spider-Woman, She-, Elektra, Storm, Thundra, Tarantula, Black Widow, Captain Marvel, and Colleen Wing. The heroes launched themselves into the fight and managed to subdue the Doom Maidens, even as Thundra questioned Annabelle's continued presence. In the midst of the fighting, Moonstar spotted Caroline and confronted her, fighting and subduing Mr. Raven before Caroline explained that Moonstar is "the battery" that powers the ritual to awaken the Doom Maidens. She then explained that Valkyrie brought Moonstar to Brazil in order to power the Valkyrie's transformation into the maiden of rage. Valkyrie then transformed and destroyed Hermotha, leaving She-Hulk to prepare to battle the newly awakened Maiden of Rage. Fearless Defenders Vol 1 1. In the North Atlantic Ocean, a storm rages as Misty Knight, "badass private investigator," infiltrates a container ship and summarily incapacitates the crew, discovering a cache of "ugly trinkets" on board. Moments later, a helicopter arrives carrying the crew of Caroline Le Fay, who open fire on Misty and force her to dive into the ocean with one of the "trinkets." Le Fay's men retrieve the crate of artifacts, noting that "some of the lesser relics were lost." The next day, at "a mass Viking grave" in the White Mountain National Forest, Misty meets with Dr. Annabelle Riggs, who "grew up watching a lot of Indiana Jones," to deliver the artifact, which Riggs identifies as "a representation of an Asgardian messenger spirit" that is a sort of music box. Riggs accidentally activates the relic, and its music reanimates the Viking corpses, which attack the team of archaeologists. Misty fights the undead warriors using the Satan Claw 2.0, a " cybernetic replica," before Valkyrie arrives. The pair battle the Vikings until Valkyrie realizes that the corpses have been reanimated by the music of the relic. She protects Riggs from the attacking Vikings until Riggs kisses her, then uses the sword Dragonfang to shatter the relic, silencing its music and deanimating the Viking corpses. As Valkyrie prepares to return to , Riggs persuades her to allow her to accompany her, and Misty offers to accompany the pair as a bodyguard, though Valkyrie warns of "filth and vermin. deceit and insanity. of torture and seduction and. of rage." She explains that the Doommaidens are rising, and claims that she is responsible. Solicit Synopsis. NEW TEAM! NEW VILLAINS! NEW CREATORS! Valkyrie and Misty Knight are the Fearless Defenders and not since Power Man and Iron Fist has an unlikely duo kicked this much—well, you know. Writer Cullen Bunn (Venom, Sixth Gun, The Fearless) and new-to-Marvel artist Will Sliney (MacGyver, Star Wars) bring you the book everyone is going to be talking about on Thursday morning. Fearless Defenders #1 Review. Despite some truly unfortunate armor – the phrase “boob saucers” wouldn’t be off the mark – Valkyrie brings with her a quiet dignity that is well suited to Misty Knight’s natural chutzpah. Misty is given some of the best lines of the book – even Valkyrie tells her “Your levity is good” with that trademark Asgardian deadpan – and the two of them are an ass-kicking dream team. Joining the duo as they track down a legendary undead menace is Dr. Annabelle Riggs, who suffers from the same affliction Natalie Portman’s character did in (a sudden and overwhelming attraction for beautiful Asgardian warriors that is powerful enough to rob her of her senses). Veronica Gandini’s colors are slick and sophisticated and while Will Sliney’s art is technically proficient for the most part, it does occasionally fall into cheesecake territory, with more than its fair share of bizarrely contorted spines and overly prominent T & A. The prevalence of back-breaking hypersexual poses – Misty Knight is a frequent victim of anatomical impossibility – is disappointing considering how well-written and thoroughly badass Bunn’s ladies are. The women of Fearless Defenders deserve better. But if one can look past the impossibly protruding chests and mind- bogglingly rotund derrieres, this a series not to be missed. Writer Cullen Bunn (Venom, Sixth Gun, The Fearless) and new-to-Marvel artist Will Sliney (MacGyver, Star Wars) bring you the book everyone is going to be talking about on Thursday morning. Bunn does an amazing job laying out the story, setting everything up in a way that is easy to understand as well as entertaining. You have these two really different characters headlining a series, and Bunn makes it work to his advantage. The result is this very quirky dialogue and really clever interaction between two very different individuals. You also have the basis for a very interesting story and a very brief introduction to the villain in this ongoing. Great pacing and pretty art made this book a fun read. I loved what I saw here and I am definitely excited to read more. Read Full Review. The only way female team books are going to stick around is if people buy and read them. If that is something you like, then you need to read this book. This book should be looked at for its own merit, but it goes without saying that this is almost like a dry run for the all female X-Men in April. If Fearless Defenders continues to have a great mix of character exchange, development and action, I think interest will continue to grow. Read Full Review. Truly, if Defenders carries on in the same direction as its premier issue, it’s going to do well. Sure, it’s a female-dominant cast, but they’re awesome for being awesome, not because they’re women. Not all of the lines are winners, but the cheeky dialogue keeps things moving along at a good pace and sets the characters up for great interactions and story progression. Slineys pencils are engaging and well-complemented by Veronica Gandinis color work, rounding out the action with flair. Its still early days for this title, but overall this book is off a solid start. Read Full Review. First issues aren't easy, but this issue makes you forget that fact. We get some nice mythological background, lovely contrast in characters between the stately Valkyrie and the streetwise Misty, and art that's flat-out wonderful on every page. Short and sweet, Faithful Spoilerites, Fearless Defenders #1 is pretty cool from every angle, and I encourage you to seek this book out and enjoy its wonder for yourself, awarding it 4.5 out of 5 stars overall. (If you can get it, I recommend the Manara variant cover.) Read Full Review. For right now it looks like the team is Misty Knight, Valkyrie and Dr. Riggs, but the cover for issue #2 looks like Danielle Moonstar will be joining them to take on the Doom Maidens in issue #3. I guess we'll have to see how that goes down. It's a Defenders title, and as long as it's published I'll keep reading it and bitching about it too. Read Full Review. I remember when I saw the roster for The Fearless Defenders I thought, 'I bet it'll be great, but I think it will be the first one to get cancelled.' I really want to be wrong, because it's a good series that offers a look at corners of the that you're not going to get in the other comics. If you want to be up on the really obscure things happening in mainstream comics, this is for you. Read Full Review. Overall, it seems we'll be getting some solid entertainment from Fearless Defenders. Go team! Read Full Review. “Fearless Defenders” sits on that interesting precipice of new comics where it's good enough to want to read more but not astounding enough to make immediate waves. Over time, “Fearless” could certainly become a great book; if there is one thing certainly not missing from the first issue, it's an abundance of heart and good intentions. Yet that'll only take it so far – with the upcoming arc inherently being about the formation of the team, it'll be a bit tough to judge the book until the end of said arc. Whether you want to stick around to see that play out is up to, but it doesn't seem like it would be a bad idea to. Read Full Review. My concerns about its ability to actually stay afloat aside, Fearless Defenders #1 was a very pleasant read from start to finish. It didn't blow my socks off, but I will happily read the first story arc and then reconsider whether this title brings enough to the table to warrant my continued readership. If you're on a tight budget then I can't say this title is going to be for you, it reminds me a bit of the current series, tons of fun but not much substance (and there are TONS of comics from Marvel, DC, Image and Dark Horse that ooze substance). This is a solid number one from Bunn and Sliney, but not a home run. Read Full Review. Fearless Defenders #1 shows that the book certainly has promise and shows that Bunn is willing to take chances, but doesn't overexert himself. The characters introduced and are likeable; the story is drenched is mystery, and the fight scenes are exciting. Fearless Defenders is definitely a book to watch out for, and adds to the list of other good Marvel titles with female leads (The others being Captain Marvel and the current ). Read Full Review. This was an entertaining book. The story itself is well-paced, with above average dialogue and the art is good, but there is room for improvement. But in all, it's enough to make me want to check back. Read Full Review. Two hot heroines working together to defeat some bad guys. Well that's what the Fearless Defenders are about and that is pretty much why we buy comics in the first place. Isn't it? Read Full Review. One of the more anticipated comics for me hasn't quite lived up to my expectations. Hopefully the series is a slow start and gets better from here. Read Full Review. And like I said earlier, I don't need the promise of the female cast members making out to get me to buy this series. If Bunn had wanted to create a romance between Dr. Riggs and Valkyrie, or at least some sexual tension, there are a lot better ways to approach such a story element than by having them share a spontaneous, passionate and utterly pointless kiss in the first issue. Read Full Review. This is a book I will keep buying. It made a great first book; it got my interest, effectively introduced the characters and left me very curious about whom the doom maidens are. For a first issue and in comparison to a lot of the new marvel books, it was great. I like the direction it’s heading, and I’m very eager to see if Bunn can continue to sell every character as well as he sold the first two. It really has a lot of potentially with a bit of growth in the artist, as long as it avoids more out of place sexual situations. Read Full Review. Overall, "Fearless Defenders" #1 offers a coincidental threat to bring Misty Knight and Valkyrie together, but that threat isn't completely realized for readers to grasp the full level. There is a strong sense of mystery and adventure, with two no-nonsense characters ready to kick ass and take names. Read Full Review. Shock us, surprise us, delight us - just don't give us the same old thing. With the wrong team name on the comic. Read Full Review. But my worry is that The Fearless Defenders may not have done quite enough to secure repeat customers. In large part its success is predicated on the chemistry between its two leads, but with the team up occurring late in the book there isn't really sufficient room for the relationship to blossom. Still, this partnership could be extremely enjoyable if given time to percolate; some titles are just built for the long game. Let's hope that its audience – who are currently spoiled for choice in terms of swiftly established, quality Marvel titles " will afford it the opportunity to deliver. Read Full Review. Despite the feeling that The Fearless Defenders #1 is trying too hard, it is mostly excusable because this is a first issue. Bunn really does present us with captivating characters, and the chemistry is definitely there. The concept of The Fearless Defenders is a good one, but I was not WOWED. This is a comic book after all, and the book cannot stand solely on good writing. The art needs to carry its weight. With all the potential a comic book can muster, The Fearless Defenders #1 still feels like a rough draft. Read Full Review. Essentially, Misty Knight fights a bunch of goons to retrieve an artifact to retrieve a mysterious musical statue for Dr. Annabelle Riggs, who, as we are informed by her clever introductory caption, "grew up watching a lot of Indiana Jones." The statue starts playing eerie music, which resurrects a horde of undead Vikings, which Misty and Valkyrie have to squash. In between, we're treated to an undead horde of uninspired dialogue, including Valkyrie's nonsensical (even by her standards) "Your levity is good." First issues can be awkward for everyone involved, and hopefully, Fearless Defenders can shake this off, otherwise, well, it might be awhile before we see this team again. Read Full Review. I forgot that this even exists. I remember loving this issue when I was around 14. Too bad I lost it. The Future of the DEFENDERS is FEARLESS.
