Yasher Koach Chanie & Shmuli Gottlieb Miami Beach became a very fortunate community when Chanie and Shmuli Gottlieb decided to relocate here. For 20 years, they have been dedicated leaders of Beth Israel Congregation, which is why Beth Israel is honored to bestow upon Chanie and Shmuli the Community Leadership Award. Chanie was raised in Staten Island, New York by her parents, Shoshy and Mutty Vegh. As pillars of the Staten Island Community, Chanie’s parents have exemplified to Chanie and her sisters, Tova Wilon and Yaffa Kuflik, what it means to serve as leaders. Chanie received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Stern College for Women and a Masters in Speech Language Pathology from Nova Southeastern University. She has been an invaluable and reliable volunteer at Beth Israel Congregation, where she has assisted with Mishloach Manot, organized many events on behalf of the Sisterhood, and served as a chairperson of several Beth Israel Annual Dinners. Chanie also volunteers her time at the Rabbi Alexander S. Gross Hebrew Academy, where she is a member of the Board of Directors, serves as a chairperson of various events on behalf of the Parent Teacher Student Association, and has served as a chairperson of the Hebrew Academy’s Annual Event. She has volunteered her services for Emunah and Sharsheret as well. Shmuli was raised in Borough Park, New York by his parents, Suri and Moshe Gottlieb. Shmuli’s parents were committed to ensuring that he, along with his sisters Tzipi Puderbeutel and Leah Klein, engaged in diligent and intensive Judaic studies, the proof of which exists in Shmuli’s extensive Judaic knowledge. Shmuli received a Bachelor of Science degree from Touro College. Always willing to lend a hand, he has volunteered his services at various Beth Israel Events. In addition, he was one of the main proponents of both the Teen Minyan and the Simchat Torah Kiddush, two significant additions to Beth Israel programming. He also volunteers at Hebrew Academy, where he contributed significantly to its Sports Program by spearheading the successful Cross Country Team. Both Chanie and Shmuli have donated generously to Beth Israel to help facilitate youth and teen programs as well as the Shul’s general well-being. Their donations have greatly enhanced Beth Israel, and their multi-faceted assistance to the organization has served as a wonderful example for others to follow. Chanie and Shmuli are very proud parents of Avi, Abigail and Isaac. Having graduated from high school, Avi is thrilled to be spending the year in Israel learning at Yeshivat Reishit Yerushalayim, to which his family has had a strong connection since its establishment. Beth Israel Congregation is delighted to honor Chanie and Shmuli this year. Rose & Sam Gurfinkel One need only be an acquaintance of Rose and Sam Gurfinkel to know that they truly deserve the title of Keter Shem Tov, The Crown of a Good Name. Their kind smiles, warm demeanors and great humility have invaluable assets to the Miami Beach Community. Rose was born in Sighet, Romania to Holocaust survivors and came to America in 1961. She was educated at Taft High School in the Bronx, New York and graduated from New York City Community College with an Associate Degree in Applied Science. Rose also received a Certificate of Dental Hygiene from the American Dental Association Council of National Board of Dental Examiners. Sam was born in a Displaced Persons camp in Poking, Germany to Holocaust survivors and moved to Israel in 1949. He was educated at Mamlachti Dati a Religious Zionist Junior High School of Bar Ilan in Tel Aviv and Yeshivat B'nei Akiva High School in Ra'anana. He was also educated at Bar Ilan University, where he studied economics and accounting. Sam served in the Israel Defense Forces as part of the Signal Corps and fought to defend the State of Israel during the Six Day War in 1967 and the Yom Kippur War in 1973. When first married, Rose and Sam lived in Holon, Israel. In 1975, they moved to Bayside, New York. They relocated to North Miami Beach and then, fortunately for Beth Israel, they moved to Miami Beach in 1988. Rose and Sam have considered Beth Israel Congregation to be their home because of the numerous friends they have made throughout decades of living in Miami Beach and because of the Modern Orthodox Religious Zionist Ideology that our Synagogue espouses. They have volunteered their time to assist with Mishloach Manot, Annual Shul Dinners, Luncheon Events, and a Welcoming Committee to attract new Shul members. They also participated in missions to Israel and have attended the Rabbi’s classes. In addition to Beth Israel, the Gurfinkels have been involved in other Miami Beach organizations such as Bikur Cholim, the Rabbi Alexander S. Gross Hebrew Academy, where Sam served on the Board of Directors, Emunah, where both Rose and Sam were honored, Amit, where Rose was honored by the Geulah- Shalvah Chapter, and Ohr Chaim, where they were both honored with the Abe Resnick Community Service Award. Sam has recently taken on a more active role in AIPAC as part of his devotion to Medinat Israel. Rose and Sam's greatest sources of joy are their children and grandchildren. Irit and Donny Kerstein, Yonatan, Gilad, Amiel and Ayelet. Michal and Mickey Wicentowsky, Joshua and Aidan. The Congregation of Beth Israel is thrilled to honor Rose & Sam. Traditionally carried in processions atformal academic events, they evoke the history and ideals ofthe institutions they represent. The staffof the University of Massachusetts Boston mace is fluted mahogany; its foot is brass. At its top, in a mahogany surround on a blue granite base, stands a bronze disk bearing the university seal, consisting ofthe arms ofMassachusetts encircled by the university's name and its date of founding, 1964. Reflecting the incorporation ofBoston State College into the university in 1982, the bronze sides ofthe seal's base bear the names and dates ofthat college and its five predecessor institutions, the first of which was founded in 1852. Academic Costume The academic regalia worn byfaculty and students at this ceremony represent traditions and Regalia that come down from the Middle Ages, when European universities were institutions of the church. At that time, robes were a common form ofdress, particularlyfor officials of church and state. The cut ofthe robe, its adornment, and the colors used comprised a specialized heraldry that conveyed the rank and station ofthe wearer. At the universities, both faculty and students were considered to be part ofthe church hierarchy and were expected to wear the prescribed gowns. As society moved toward more modern forms of dress, only royalty, clergy, judges, and academics retained the traditional regalia, reserving it onlyfor ceremonial use. Modern academic regalia retain some ofthe symbols ofthe earlier forms ofceremonial dress.
