As soon as I set foot in this lush, verdant forest and the fresh air filled my lungs, my soul felt rejuvenated and all the tension that had built up from my life back in the city disappeared. As its name suggests, the light in the forest was spectacular. The dappled sunlight seemed to dance as it streamed through the forest canopy. • JAPAN's MOST SPECTACULAR NATIONAL PARKS When You Think
JAPAN’S MOST SPECTACULAR NATIONAL PARKS When you think of Japan it is often the gigantic megacity of Tokyo that springs to mind along with its bustling technology fuelled society that is so impressive for its ingenuity and innovation. Another well-known image and indeed symbol of Japan is the iconic Mt.Fuji that beautifully rises gracefully towards the heavens. In any case, in comparison with the wide variety of attractions on show, Japan’s national parks often fall somewhat under the radar of visitors to its shores. Natural wonders abound however and the plethora of incredible sights will leave you astounded at the scenic beauty before your eyes. Whether you enjoy secret shrines, natural hot springs, towering peaks, or colorful spring blooms, there's a lot to take in when you visit Japan's national parks. The country’s national park system was first established in 1931, and today, it has 34 distinct preserves, each one offering something unique, compelling, and generally free for all to visit without the need for permits. And while you could spend a lifetime exploring all of the splendidly whimsical islands and cities, we suggest you start with this list. Akan-Mashu National Park is located in eastern Hokkaido. The park is well known for its three beautiful lakes: Lake Akan, Lake Mashu and Lake Kussharo. Lake Mashu is of particular fame. Although often covered by mysterious fog, its waters are some of the clearest in the world. The Park is composed of two separate parts. The smaller, western portion contains Lake Akan with the lakeside hot spring resort of Akanko Onsen.

ATWS 2021 Geo 3 Geopark Exploration in Northern Japan: Sanriku & Toya-Usu (10 days / 9 nights) Japan, where hills and mountains occupy more than 70% of the country, is one of the world‘s leading volcanic powers and a wonderland for curious explorers and geo-fans! This tour will take you on an active discovery of two of Japan’s largest geoparks. The Sanriku Geopark is Japan’s largest geopark, stretching some 220 km along the Pacific Coast of Aomori, Iwate and Miyagi Prefectures. From the pristine waters of Jodogahama Beach (literally ‘Paradise Beach’) to the mysterious hues of Ryusendo Limestone Cave’s underground lakes, the Sanriku Geopark is a breathtakingly beautiful world of blue! One of Japan’s oldest geological sites, since ancient times the Sanriku area has been ravaged by earthquakes and tsunamis, including the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsununami of 2011. Ten years following the disaster, this tour gives visitors the chance to experience firsthand the incredible recovery of the coastal region as they walk along sections of the ‘Michinoku Coastal Trail’, recently recognized by National Geographic and Lonely Planet. Enjoy the chance to meet with the resilient people of the region, listen to their stories, and learn more about their unique lifestyle and culture based on a deep reverence toward nature and both the blessings and ferocity it brings. Moving further north to Japan’s northernmost island prefecture, Hokkaido, discover and experience the Toya-Usu UNESCO Geopark, also known as a ‘Living Volcano Museum’. Further to the east side of Hokkaido, Akan Mashu National Park, which has two caldera terrains of Lake Kussharo and Lake Akan , is one of the largest national parks in Japan.

More and more national and international stakeholders are engaged in projects related to “Geoheritage”, “Geo-conservation”, “Geoparks” and “Geotourism”; and are positively influencing the general perception of modern Earth Sciences. Most notably, “Geoparks” have proven to be excellent tools to educate the public about Earth Sciences; and they are also important areas for recreation and significant sustain- able economic development through geotourism. In order to develop further the understanding of Earth Sciences in general and to elucidate the importance of Earth Sciences for Society, the “Geoheritage, Geoparks and Geotourism Conservation and Management Series” has been launched together with its sister “GeoGuides” series. Projects developed in partnership with UNESCO, World Heritage and Global Geoparks Networks, IUGS and IGU, as well as with the ‘Earth Science Matters’ Foundation will be considered for publication. This series aims to provide a place for in-depth presentations of developmental and management issues related to Geoheritage and Geotourism in existing and potential Geoparks. Individually authored monographs as well as edited volumes and conference proceedings are welcome; and this book series is considered to be complementary to the Springer-Journal “Geoheritage”.

Akan-Mashu Welcome to Akan-Mashu National Park National Park Trail Guide Akan-Mashu National Park covers around 914 square kilo- meters of volcanic terrain. The landscape is the result of major eruptions some hundreds of thousands of years ago, and features active volcanoes, diverse fauna and flora, and Japan’s largest caldera lake. Explore the park on one of the many walking and hiking trails introduced in this booklet. The trails vary in length and difficulty, from short nature walks suitable for families, to challenging mountain climbs for experienced hikers, where climbers are afforded prime views of the vast caldera lakes. The first stop for any visitor to the park should be one of the visitor centers. Staff at the Kawayu Eco-museum Center, the Akankohan Eco-museum Center, and the Wakoto Field House can recommend the best hike for you and provide any necessary information you might need, including the latest news on bear sightings. For safety rea- sons, anyone planning to go on a hike must write their name and intended route in the ledger at the trailhead. We hope you enjoy your time in Hokkaido's great outdoors.
