From the main entrance from London to the Butterbeer to Hogwart’s Express, and Escape from Gringotts, it is an amazing new place with magic around every corner. One of the best things about the new Diagon Ally park is that the show never seems to end. Everywhere you look, there's some moving animatronics character, live character shows and performances, a ride, scenes from the books, and so on. This includes both inside the retail locations and attractions, but also out in the "streets." You're continually entertained and made to feel like you've truly entered the world of Harry Potter. In this book, we’ll explore Diagon Alley™, all of the shops, dining, rides, and attractions. You’ll have a wand selected for you, cast a few spells with it, drink some Butterbeer, and escape from Gringotts Bank; the most secure place in the world. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter: Diagon Alley™ is located at Universal Orlando’s Universal Studios park between the San Francisco area and Fear Factor Live! When you walk into Diagon Alley™ through a secret entrance in a brick wall, you are immediately immersed into the world of Harry Potter. You will not see any of the attractions outside this area or even hotels around Orlando. Once you walk through the wall, you are fully immersed in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. AT T R A CT I O N S Hogwarts Express Start off your Wizarding World of Harry Potter experience right. Grab a ride aboard the Hogwarts Express! To do this, start at Universal’s Islands of Adventure and make your way to the Lost Continent. Inside the Lost Continent, just before you go into the Wizarding World of Harry Potter: Hogsmeade, you’ll find the gates to the Hogwarts Express train station. You must have a 2 park pass to enjoy this attraction, so please keep that in mind when planning your visit to the Wizarding World! To get your tickets, visit WizardingWorldPark.com Once you enter the station, you will wind around next to and underneath the Dragon Challenge roller coaster. Once inside the station building, you may catch your first glimpse of the Hogwarts Express. It’s absolutely magical! Smoke billows out from the smokestack and wheels as the engine rolls into the station. A conductor will guide you to your car and cabin where you will join your friends and family for an amazing ride from Hogwarts to London! While on your journey, be sure to watch out the window and the door to the hallway! You never know what you may see on the trip! TIP: Be sure to ride the Hogwarts Express in both directions, as the show is very different, each way! After a short ride, you’ll arrive at King’s Cross Station in London. King’s Cross Station For anyone that has been to London, King’s Cross Station will amaze you! It’s like you’re actually at the station in London!….only cleaner. :) As you make your way out of the station, you’ll see luggage strewn all over the place, a shop for departing guests to grab a quick drink or snack, and maybe even a few hidden gems taken directly from the Harry Potter movies! Near the exit of the station, you’ll encounter local artists playing music to entertain travelers before they hit the streets of London. When exiting, you miss many of the attractions of King’s Cross Station. Be sure to come back and ride the Hogwarts Express back to Hogsmeade to get the full experience, including running through the brick wall at Platform 9-3/4! TIP: Watch for a special billboard advertisement on the wall as you make your way through King Cross Station to board Hogwarts Express back to Hogsmeade. London As you exit King Cross Station, you will find yourself in the middle of London with a view of The Simpsons ride. As you wonder the London streets, you may run into the Knight Bus with an opportunity to talk to the shrunken head. Also, if you look closely, you will see Harry’s Uncle’s place at 12 Grimmauld Place. Look closely at the window above the door and you may catch a glimpse of the house elf, Kreacher! Be sure to take a moment to go out into the main area of Universal Studios to see the full panoramic view of the London facade! TIP: There’s a classic London phone booth on the street. Go in and dial “magic” for a special message. Diagon Alley™ It’s easy to miss the entrance to Diagon Alley™ from the London streets. You will often find a Universal team member guiding the way. You’re looking for a brick wall with a couple of openings on either side, right next to the gates for the underground train station. As you walk through the openings on either side, you round a corner and see a brick wall that has separated, as though by magic! You can even still hear the bricks moving, if you listen closely! Through the opening of the brick wall, you finally see what you’ve been waiting for; Diagon Alley™! Immediately in front of you, you will see the Ukrainian Ironbelly dragon perched atop Gringott’s Bank. You may even catch it breathing fire! As you look around, you may see Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes or the Leaky Cauldron. Immediately visible is also the Gregorovitch Wand Store, however, you may wish to wait for Ollivanders, as it’s much more detailed and has the wand selection show for you to have your wand pick you. Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes Truly one of the most amazing pieces of theming in Diagon Alley™ is the exterior of Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes. This store is immediately to your right as you enter Diagon Alley™ and grabs your attention with a giant man taking off his top hat and a toilet bowl spell in the window. Inside the store, you will see all manner of activities among the items in the store, including a trapeze act and the naming ceremony for Pygmy Puffs. You will quickly get swept up in all the happenings and items for sale! Fred and George Weasleys’ colourful shop offers a cornucopia of magical jokes, tricks and toys including Pygmy Puffs, U-No-Poo, Skiving Snackboxes, and more. TIP: The store is quite small and I’ve found that it’s quite fun to find a quiet, out-of- the-way corner to just watch the goings-on. TIP: Purchase your own Pygmy Puff and enjoy an extra magical experience when you get to name and adopt your new friend. Quality Quidditch Supplies Right next to Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes (it’s actually closer to the entrance to Diagon Alley™, but not as attention-grabbing), is Quality Quidditch™ Supplies. Here, you may purchase your Quaffle balls, Quidditch™ brooms, Quidditch™ apparel and team souvenirs. Ollivanders™ Wand Shop Right in the heart of Diagon Alley™, you will find Ollivanders™ Wand Shop; Makers of Fine Wands since 382 BC. Here, you can buy your most important wizard supply: your wand. You may enter Ollivanders™ in a couple ways. You can enter directly into the store and begin your search for your wand. There is a balcony above you with wand covered walls and shelves of wands to your right as you enter. It’s an amazing piece of artwork! TIP: In the back left of the store, you can find a chart that gives you dates for different wands (for example, the ash wand is from Feb. 18 - Mar. 17 - Cedric Diggory, Ron Weasley’s first wand). You may wish to use this chart to pick the right wand for you based on your birthday, anniversary, first time you came to Diagon Alley™, or even your favorite Harry Potter character’s birthday.

  • Harry Potter, Lord Voldemort, and the Importance of Resilience by Emily
Harry Potter, Lord Voldemort, and the Importance of Resilience by Emily Anderson A thesis presented to the Honors College of Middle Tennessee State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for graduation from the University Honors College Spring 2017 Harry Potter and the Importance of Resilience by Emily Anderson APPROVED: ____________________________ Dr. Martha Hixon, Department of English Dr. Maria Bachman, Chair, Department of English __________________________ Dr. Teresa Davis, Department of Psychology ___________________________ Dr. Philip E. Phillips, Associate Dean University Honors College ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank Dr. Hixon for her knowledge and endless support of this thesis even when finishing seemed impossible. I would also like to thank my family for the countless hours spent listening to the importance of resilience in Harry Potter and for always being there to edit, comment on, and support this thesis. i ABSTRACT Literature and psychology inadvertently go hand in hand. Authors create characters that are relatable and seem real. This thesis discusses the connection between psychology and literature in relation to the Harry Potter series. This thesis focuses on the importance of resilience or lack thereof in the protagonist, Harry, and the antagonist Voldemort. Specifically, it addresses resilience as a significant difference between the two. In order to support such claims, I will be using Erik Erikson’s Theory of Psycho-Social Development to analyze the struggles and outcomes of both Harry and Voldemort in relation to resilience and focus on the importance of strong, supportive relationships as a defining factor in the development of resilience. ii TABLE OF CONTENTS ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS……………………………………………………………......i ABSTRACT……………………………………………………………………………….ii CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION ......................................................................................

  • Wizarding Hierarchy
English University of Iceland School of Humanities English Wizarding Hierarchy A Portrayal of Discrimination and Prejudice in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter novels B.A. Thesis Sigríður Eva Þorsteinsdóttir Kt.: 020696-3549 Supervisor: Valgerður Guðrún Bjarkadóttir May 2018 Abstract This paper explores how the Harry Potter novels by J.K. Rowling touches on the subject of discrimination and general prejudice against minority groups throughout the history of mankind. Though there are many minority groups in the novels, only a few will be discussed. Each of them will be compared to minority groups that faces prejudice in the real world. The paper further examines the effect discrimination has on the wizarding world and the struggle that wizards have to face to break from old habits, such as the enslavement of house-elves and their ongoing quarrels with goblins and other non-human creatures. The history of these feuds will be discussed as well as possible ways of mending the relationship between wizards and the minority groups. Oppression and abuse towards these minority groups are parts of the daily life of wizards and has been for centuries. Likewise, there will a focus on the prejudice werewolves face and how they mirror HIV infected people. In order to compare werewolves and people with HIV, a series of articles and studies on attitude towards diseases such as HIV/AIDS will be analyzed. The paper will also include a discussion about a few characters from the series that in some way are connected to minority groups: Hermione Granger, Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Dolores Umbridge, Lord Voldemort, Dobby the house- elf, and lastly the werewolf Remus Lupin.

  • An Exploration of JK Rowling's Social and Political Agenda in the Harry
Vollmer UW-L Journal of Undergraduate Research X (2007) Harry’s World: An Exploration of J.K. Rowling’s Social and Political Agenda in the Harry Potter Series Erin Vollmer Faculty Sponsor: Richard Gappa, Department of English ABSTRACT Over the years, the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling has grown in popularity, becoming one of the most read and most criticized pieces of children’s literature to date. Interestingly, the series has not only gained popularity with children, but also their adult counterparts. As a result of its adult success, Harry Potter has attracted more and more scholars to pursue serious literary analysis, most frequently exploring themes such as death and religion. However, the focus of this research is on the intertextual parallels of the numerous hierarchical structures found in the Harry Potter series, examining how these hierarchies develop the social and racial themes in the story and vice versa. A further purpose is to determine if there is a correlation between the power structures found in the series and our own, drawing on secondary criticisms and theory for support. Above all, although the series should not be reduced to “this versus that,” there is sufficient evidence to argue that a conflict of materialistic versus altruistic values is at work in the Harry Potter series. Therefore, the examination of race, hierarchy, and power assists in the recognition of the social and political systems at work in the series. Keywords: J.K. Rowling, Hierarchy, Materialism INTRODUCTION When a skinny boy with black hair, green eyes, and a telltale scar appeared on the scene in 1997, nobody could have predicted the significant impact this seemingly insignificant boy would have on the world.

  • Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone the First in the Wonderful Best
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone The first in the wonderful best-selling series of novels by writer J.K. Rowling comes ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’. The journey is just beginning for Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe); as an eleven year old orphan who lives in the cupboard under the stairs of his aunt’s house, Harry has not had the best of lives up until this point. He is under-appreciated and frankly unwanted. Harry’s life is about to change; soon he’ll find that his parents we’re not killed in a car crash as he thought, but that they were murdered by a horrifying dark wizard. He will soon attend a wizarding school and learn much that he never thought possible; he will learn how to fly as well as play the sport of Quidditch. Harry’s life will never be the same again! Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Harry Potter is a well-known name when it comes to the world of Wizardry, and he’s got a big reputation to live up to. His reputation, as well as his magical abilities, are about to be put to the test! A mysterious visitor named Dobby the House Elf appears at Harry’s house over the summer and warns Harry not to return to Hogwarts. Knowing his life will be in danger, Harry is determined that this warning holds no merit and returns to Hogwarts, but soon finds that perhaps he shouldn’t have. “The Chamber of Secrets Has Been Opened.

  • A Fiction-Based Religion Within the Harry Potter Fandom
Religions 2014, 5, 219–267; doi:10.3390/rel5010219 OPEN ACCESS religions ISSN 2077-1444 www.mdpi.com/journal/religions Article ‘Snapewives’ and ‘Snapeism’: A Fiction-Based Religion within the Harry Potter Fandom Zoe Alderton Independent scholar; E-Mail: [email protected] Received: 18 December 2013; in revised form: 6 February 2014 / Accepted: 11 February 2014 / Published: 3 March 2014 Abstract: The book and film franchise of Harry Potter has inspired a monumental fandom community with a veracious output of fanfiction and general musings on the text and the vivid universe contained therein. A significant portion of these texts deal with Professor Severus Snape, the stern Potions Master with ambiguous ethics and loyalties. This paper explores a small community of Snape fans who have gone beyond a narrative retelling of the character as constrained by the work of Joanne Katherine Rowling. The ‘Snapewives’ or ‘Snapists’ are women who channel Snape, are engaged in romantic relationships with him, and see him as a vital guide for their daily lives. In this context, Snape is viewed as more than a mere fictional creation. He is seen as a being that extends beyond the Harry Potter texts with Rowling perceived as a flawed interpreter of his supra-textual essence. While a Snape religion may be seen as the extreme end of the Harry Potter fandom, I argue that religions of this nature are not uncommon, unreasonable, or unprecedented. Popular films are a mechanism for communal bonding, individual identity building, and often contain their own metaphysical discourses. Here, I plan to outline the manner in which these elements resolve within extreme Snape fandom so as to propose a nuanced model for the analysis of fandom-inspired religion without the use of unwarranted veracity claims.
