WORNICK FOODS Now hiring Package Engineer

SUMMARY: Performs professional work in the conception, specification, , development, manufacture, testing, and cost effectiveness of packaging materials and systems to contain, protect, and ship shelf stable, refrigerated, and frozen food products. • Interfaces frequently with packaging material suppliers, packaging equipment vendors, universities with packaging engineering programs, and various industry and government groups. • From time to time provides written and oral presentations to various company and project stakeholders, including top level Wornick management, addressing packaging technology related matters.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide package technology services to operations, , product development, business development, engineering, and research and development teams, including: feasibility, practicability, specifications, cost effectiveness and supply related issues of existing and proposed solutions. • Ensure that the performance of existing and proposed packaging solutions meet or exceed all customer requirements, Wornick requirements, and applicable USDA, FDA, and Federal, State, and local transportation standards. • Develop practical, cost effective packaging solutions and specifications, including performance specifications, via collaboration with all internal and external stakeholders including: customers, vendors, engineering, operations, logistics, business development, product development, quality, and food safety. • Qualify proposed packaging components through material testing and experimentation, factory acceptance trials, and in-house line trials; re-qualify existing packaging via the same methodologies on an annual basis; document and communicate test results clearly, in a timely fashion, and to all necessary stakeholders. • Understand, enforce, and perform all duties in compliance with The Wornick Co.’s personal safety rules, Good Manufacturing Practices and food safety programs, and the Wornick Operating System. • Lead continuous improvement projects to improve packaging line uptime, working closely with the Wornick operations team and outside equipment vendors to provide lasting solutions to everyday problems. • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. • A working knowledge of , metal, polymer, and packaging materials and systems, both rigid and flexible, is required. A working knowledge of FDA, USDA, and USDOT packaging regulations is required. A working knowledge of polymer chemistry, polymer thermodynamics, polymer , polymer forming and conversion, and paperboard forming and conversion is required. • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, blueprints, and technical drawings is required; • A working knowledge of statistical methods and statistical process control is required; a working of lean manufacturing methods, finite element analysis, and optimization modeling is highly preferred. • Ability to network with internal and external packaging material and equipment vendors, and ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, company stakeholders, regulatory agencies, and members of the business community, is required. • Ability to work both independently, and in a team environment, is required as is the ability to communication clearly, concisely, and effectively. • The ideal candidate will rely on broad industry experience, will use good judgment, and apply exceptional time management skills to successfully prioritize, execute, and complete individual, team, and company goals. • Strong communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written. Ability to effectively present information to business stakeholders including senior management and clients. • Ability to apply principles of both abstract and scientific thinking to a wide range of existing and future food packaging problems and opportunities. • Travel may be required up to 25% of the time. • A proficiency in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, statistical analysis software, and engineering software such as Engineer’s Toolbox (ETBX) is required.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: The successful candidate will have a BS degree in packaging engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, physical chemistry, or organic chemistry; MS or PhD degrees preferred. • The successful candidate will have at least 2 years of experience in the application of state-of-the- art packaging technology in a food, beverage, or pharmaceutical environment; three to 5 years is preferred. • Experience in a non-food related consumer packaged goods industry will be considered. • Ability to demonstrate excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills including the ability to clearly present recommendations and summarize complex issues.
