Moth Species Trapped Or Seen in 2004
Review of 2014 non-avian records Moths The micro moth highlights of the year included two superb examples of the rare migrant Tebenna micalis (Vagrant Twitcher), trapped on consecutive nights at Hythe on 31st October and Saltwood on 1st November. These appear to be the first records for VC15 (East Kent) and the first in the county since 1860, and were part of a small influx to the south and west coasts of Britain in 2014. Tebenna micalis at Hythe (Ian Roberts) Tebenna micalis at Saltwood (Paul Howe) Other significant records involved the scarce immigrants Uresiphita gilvata (Yellow-underwing Pearl) at Hythe on 22nd October and Catoptria verellus (Marbled Grass-veneer) at Saltwood on the 25th July, and the first area record of the adventive Cydalima perspectalis (Boxworm Moth) at Saltwood on 30th July. When I joined Butterfly Conservation some ten years ago, as a new recruit to the wonderful world of moths, I never envisaged becoming part of the main committee let alone finding myself on this ‘lofty perch’! Firstly, I would like to register my and the Branch’s thanks to Pete Eeles for his support and enthusiasm for the branch during his time as chair, despite the pressures of a job that often saw him away from the country, and to the other members of the main committee for their support and enthusiasm over the past twelve months. -

The historical scarcity of many leaf-mining moths in East Yorkshire (vice- county [VC] 61) (see Sutton & Beaumont, 1989. Butterflies and Moths of Yorkshire: Distribution and Conservation . Yorkshire Naturalists’ Union) is at least partly due to a lack of recorder effort, and a number of apparently local or rare species are actually relatively widespread and common (Chesmore, 2008 The distribution of Narycia duplicella (Goeze 1783) (Lepidoptera: Psychidae) in Yorkshire. I searched almost 200 sites in VC 61 for leaf-mining moth larvae and bagworms (Psychidae) from 2013-2016. The majority of the sites were visited only briefly, but 15 species were added to the VC list, with another two added to the Yorkshire (VCs 61-65) list (Table 1). These have been documented in both the regional summaries (Frost, 2014. Department of Pure and Applied Biology Imperial College at Silwood Park Silwood Park Ascot Berkshire SL5 7PY November 1982 Abstract In this project, the changes in the community of leaf-miners and their hymenopterous parasites were studied in relation to plant succession. Leaf-miners are insects that spend at least part of their larval existence feeding internally within the leaf. The leaf-miners attacking plants over a specific successional sequence at Silwood Park, Berkshire, U.K. were studied, and the changes in taxonomic composition, host specialization, phenology and absolute abundance were examined in the light of recent theories of plant/insect-herbivore interactions. Similar comparisons were made between the leaf-miners attacking mature and seedling birch. The factors influencing the number of species of miner found on a particular type of plant were investigated by a multiple regression analysis of the leaf-miners of British trees and plant properties such as geographical distribution, taxonomic relatedness to other plants and plant size. The results are compared with similar studies on other groups and a less rigorous treatment of herbaceous plants. A large number of hymenopterous parasites were reared from dipterous leaf-mines on early successional plants. The parasite community structure is compared with the work of R.R.Askew and his associates on the parasites of tree leaf-miners. The Appendices include a key to British birch leaf-miners and notes on the taxonomy and host range of the reared parasites. -

I Europa finns fem eller sex arter – beroende som finns hos de två övriga underfamiljerna inom UNDERFAMILJ på hur Phyllocnistis xenia ska uppfattas – varav tre före- familjen styltmalar (Gracillariidae). Andra känne- SLÄKTE kommer i Norden. tecken är att larverna saknar fötter samt har mundelar som genomgår en omvandling först i sista stadiet, och då enbart för att spinna en kokong. The first three months of the year were particularly poor with overall numbers and species diversity lower than normal. A public mothing event held at Ventnor Botanical Gardens at the end of the month produced some good moths including presumed immigrant Agrotera nemoralis, which was first recorded on the Island in 2015. A prolonged spell of hot dry weather in June and July saw a big change in moth numbers and a decent run of migrant moths. A Druid (Aedia funesta) was trapped in Totland, there are only 12 previous UK records of this species, two of which were from the same site in Totland. A Light Crimson Underwing (Catocala promissa) was recorded at St. Catherine’s Point and a Dark Crimson Underwing (Catocala sponsa) at Bonchurch. Other good migrant moths included Splendid Brocade (Lacanobia splendens) and four Catoptria verellus, all from Shanklin. Another five Agrotera nemoralis were trapped in Bonchurch and Shanklin. The non-migrant highlight was undoubtedly finding Suspected (Parastichtis suspecta) at St. Catherine’s Point. There are only two previous county records, from July 1897 and August 1963. -
Identification of Leaf-Mining Lepidoptera
THE IDENTIFICATION OF LEAF-MINING LEPIDOPTERA INTRODUCTION The aim of this booklet is to enable the user to identify most of the leaf-mining lepidoptera. It is not possible to cover all the leaf-mining species in such a small booklet, however over 90% of the true mining species should be identifiable with its use. The guide has been kept as simple as possible. Along with the usual keys I have added a chart on hawthorn to assist with the identification of the Nepticulidae. Much of the information contained herein is gleaned from volumes 1 and 2 of “The Moths and Butterflies of Great Britain and Ireland” with some addition notes supplied by A. Maitland Emmet along with the occasional modification of my own. I have also included within the birch feeding miners a key written by David Manning on the Eriocraniidae. A word of warning before you start to look at mines, some flies, beetles, wasps and sawflies also produce larvae that mine leaves, so it is possible that these could be mistaken for lepidopterous mines. A good guide is that the larvae of the Nepticulidae usually leave their frass, droppings, in a continuous line and the larvae of the Gracillariidae usually pile their frass in a particular place inside the mine; there are, of course, a few exceptions to this. Generally flies etc. leave their frass in irregular patches and usually there is much less frass in the mines of flies etc. than in those produced by lepidoptera. A further guide is to look at the list of foodplants which follows, if the plant you have found a mine in is not in this list it is quite likely that it will not be a lepidopteran mine. -
