WELCOME FROM THE RECTOR OF THE UNIVERSITY OF ROME FORO ITALICO Fabio Pigozzi On behalf of the University of Rome “Foro Italico” it is a great honor and pleasure for me to address a warm welcome to all the participants to the 11th EAS Conference. The University of Rome Foro Italico is the only Italian, and one of the few European, vocational universities entirely devoted to sport and exercise science which has achieved a prominent reputation thanks to its history, facilities, the quality of teaching and continuing-education activities, the strong emphasis on research and scientific achievement and the reliable strategy of internationalization through a variety of international programs and networks. Athletes are an enormous resource for the society but still their rights to combine education and sport need to be fully supported to ensure them a constructive transition to the labour market at the end of their sports career. Including the promotion and encouragement of dual career in its strategic agenda, the University of Rome Foro Italico is committed to promote student-athletes enrolled in its courses and to strenghten a close collaboration with governments, educational and sport institutions intending to make real progress in dual-career of student-athletes mission. The EAS Conference provides an excellent opportunity to realize the full potentials of the interaction between sport and education, human interaction, listening and learning, helping and sharing among different stakeholders in sport and education from several European countries. I do hope and believe that this Conference will inspire our work to drive positive changes towards dual career paths for student-athletes at national and European levels, and be a landmark for new ideas. With the aim of advancing the dialogue on dual career of European student-athletes and generating positive changes I wish the best success to the EAS Conference. Thank you. 3 GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT Tibor Kozsla Dear Colleagues, Dear Friends, I have the honour to welcome all of your in Rome for the 11th EAS Annual Conference. This is a great achievement that EAS is organising this year conference in Italy. My first words of appreciation go to the Rector of the University of Rome Foro Italico, Professor Fabio Pigozzi, who has supported the organization of the EAS Conference in Rome. We highly appreciate the commitment and endeavour of Professor Laura Capranica, EAS Executive Board Member, for her enthusiasm and commitment together with her colleagues of the local Organising Committee. In this year, 2014 we celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the formal establishment of EAS, which is still the only European network fully committed to the enhancement of dual career of European student-athletes. Being on the stage of the European sport life, working and supporting elite athletes balancing their sport and educational careers is not an easy task. More than just supporting them for an important examination or sport competition, our commitment pertains the recognition of their potential as talented European citizens for an innovation society. During the past 10 years EAS played an important role in continuously developing projects and strategies at National and European levels to establish an effective dialogue between academic and sport bodies, which is not always optimal. The EAS Conferences highly contributed to raise the awareness of differences and commonalities existing between countries in dual career policies and to share best practices to be adopted at European level. Enthusiastic and committed members animated this forum in support of elite athletes wishing to pursue their sport and academic careers. Furthermore, the Network promoted and got involved in joint European projects, where the expertise of its members was deemed crucial. EAS participated in the EU Expert Groups where issues related to the combination of elite sport and education were discussed, contributing to the efforts of all stakeholders 4 responsible for the development of dual career in Europe. In this framework, the EU Guidelines on Dual Career for elite athletes are a major milestone. However, today many issues still need to be managed. In fact, the needs of elite athletes representing our countries, sport organizations, and universities often continue to be underestimated, if not neglected. To stimulate research and fresh ideas for the development of dual career and enhancement of possible solutions, last year EAS introduced the “Bengt Nybelius Scholarship”. As a nice start, I am proud to announce that the work on the motivation of European student-athletes towards a dual career that last year was awarded our Scholarship has been accepted for publication in the prestigious European Journal of Sport Science. I wish all the best to the candidates for the 2014 Bengt Nybelius Scholarship. They represent the next generation of potential actors in European dual career promotion. Organized during the Italian Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2014, the present Conference represents an enormous opportunity to foresee future actions to be carried out during the next years. The upcoming election of the EAS President and Board Members will stimulate our vision. I am sure that they will strengthen the relevance of our Network and empower its members to join forces for an efficient implementation of an effective dual career system at the beginning of its 2nd decade of our Network. The main focus is now to be active in guiding dual career in our countries and to take advantages of the opportunities provided at European level. Now it is time for more actions. 5 CONFERENCE PROGRAMME 6 Thursday, September 11th, 2014 11:00 - 14:00 Arrivals and Registration 14:00 - 15:30 Welcome and Introduction Fabio Pigozzi, Rector of the University of Rome “Foro Italico” Tibor Kozsla, President of EAS Antonio Naddeo, Head of the Department for Regional Affairs, Local Authorities and Sport of the Presidency of the Italian Council of Ministers Josefa Idem, Member of the Italian Senate Roberto Reggi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education, Universities and Research Andrea Lenzi, President of the Italian University Council (CUN) Giovanni Malagò, President of Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) 15:30 – 16:00 Coffee Break 16:00 – 17:00 General Assembly Election of EAS President and EAS Executive Board 17:00 – 18:00 Guided Visit to the Foro Italico (EAS Executive Board Meeting) 18:30-19:30 Cultural Programme 20:00 - 21:30 Welcome Reception Friday, September 12th, 2014 09:00 – 09:45 EU Policy on Dual Career Agata Dziarnowska, European DG Education and Culture, Sport; Erasmus+ 10:00 – 11:00 Dual Career in Italy Daniela Drago, CONI Sports Promotion Department Guglielmo Guerrini, Coach Paolo Bouquet, University of Trento Corrado Lupo, University of Torino 11:00 – 11:15 Coffee Break 11:15 – 13:00 EAS Dual Career Ambassadors Josefa Idem, Member of Italian Parliament Laura Coccia, Member of Italian Parliament Gaetano Carboni, MasterCard Worldwide Daniele Masala, University of Cassino and Southern Lazio Karen Putzer, University of Trento 13:00 – 14:00 Lunch 14:00 – 15:00 Introducing the Sport Science B.A. and M.A. Programme for Coaches Donatella Minelli, School of Sport CONI Servizi SpA Veronique Leseur and Patricia Vandewalle, INSEP 15:00 – 16:15 Workshop on EU Project WINNER Education Model 16:15 – 16:30 Coffee Break 16:30 – 18:00 Dual Career in Europe Margo de Lange, ENAS Andrej Pisl, EUSA Kole Gjeloshaj, FISU Marco Di Donato, UNI-MED 18:00 – 19:00 Bengt Nybelius Scholarship Presentations 20:00 – 22:30 Gala Dinner Award Ceremony of the Bengt Nybelius Scholarship 7 EU POLICY ON DUAL CAREER 8 Agata Dziarnowska Born in Poland on January 26, 1982. Since July 2014 she works as a Policy Officer, Unit Sport, within European Commission, and her responsibilities are training in sport, social inclusion as well as relations with Council and Presidencies. From 2009 to 2014 she has been working as a Senior Expert in Ministry of Sport and Tourism of the Republic of Poland. During this period she was responsible for EU affairs, development of dual career of athletes and EQF/NQF in sport. Moreover, she was chairperson of the EU Council Working Party on Sport under the Polish Presidency as well as representative of Poland in the: EU Council Working Party on Sport. She also was part of EU Expert Group on Good Governance in sport, EU Expert Group on Education and Training in sport as well as Erasmus+ Committee. The subject of dual careers for sportspeople has a high degree of priority because of the challenge to link the sport and education systems in such a way that athletes can prepare for a well-balanced career. The specific issue of the quality of education for young people involved in top-level sport has been raised by Member States and was chosen as one of the priority themes in both 1st and 2nd EU Work Plan. Moreover, projects focusing on development of dual careers of athletes have been financed first through the Preparatory Actions and now Erasmus+ Programme. The EU Expert Group “Education and Training in Sport” (XG ETS) has submitted EU guidelines on dual careers for athletes in September 2012. They were followed by the adoption of Council Conclusions on dual careers for athletes in May 2013, inviting the EU Member States, European Commission and sport movement to develop further actions. Dual careers is a priority in the Sport chapter of Erasmus+ and a study has been launched in 2014 to define the minimum quality requirements of supporting dual career services and facilities. In 2017 the implementation of the national guidelines and European actions in this field should be further analyzed and based on these results further actions would be taken into consideration. 9 DUAL CAREER IN ITALY 10 Daniela Drago Daniela Drago is currently the Manager at the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) responsible for support to Sports Organizations in project development and access to EU funding opportunities.
