There are visa service providers, such as Travisa, which will do the legwork for you, saving you the travel. However, please note that it will cost more to acquire your visa through these services. He is active in diverse areas and in his hometown of Takikawa, Hokkaido, the “Paper Bag Lan- tern Festival,” which was his brainchild, takes place every February (this year marks its 11th anniversary). Mr. Igarashi’s desire for the paper bag lantern artworks to fulfill the role of bringing people togeth- er, “to engage with art in everyday life,” and “to create a town which attracts visitors through art” is being realized. 1 Design Education in Asia 2000- 2010 Exploring the impact of institutional ‘twinning’ on graphic design education in Singapore Simon Richards Z3437992 2 3 Although Singapore recently celebrated 50 years of graphic design, relatively little documentation exists about the history of graphic design in the island state. This research explores Singaporean design education institutes that adopted ‘twinning’ strategies with international design schools over the last 20 years and compares them with institutions that have retained a more individual and local profile. Seeking to explore this little-studied field, the research contributes to an emergent conversation about Singapore’s design history and how it has influenced the current state of the design industry in Singapore. The research documents and describes the growth resulting from a decade of investment in the creative fields in Singapore. It also establishes a pattern articulated via interviews and applied research involving local designers and design educators who were invited to take part in the research. The content of the interviews demonstrates strong views that reflect the growing importance of creativity and design in the local society. In considering the deliberate practice of Singaporean graphic design schools adopting twinning strategies with western universities, the research posits questions about whether Singapore is now able to confirm that such relationships have been beneficial as viable long-term strategies for the future of the local design industry. If so, the ramifications may have a significant impact not only in Singapore but also in major new education markets throughout Asia, such as the well-supported creative sectors within China and India. -

The regional authority has therefore developed a research and innovation strategy to meet the challenges faced by businesses in the region. This strategy has been compiled by applying the "Smart Specialisation" method, in which the interaction between businesses, research groups and the public support system is a central aspect. The region of Møre og Romsdal has been awarded a place on a European Commission study together with sev- eral other regions in Europe, and the study involving Møre og Romsdal comprises part of the knowledge platform on which the new strategy has been based. The fact that our region has been studied and assessed by external parties eliminates any reservations that our new strategy has been based on myths and theories that cannot be documented. The analyses that were part of the study provided us with excellent guidelines in terms of both content and process for the strategy, and these have broadly been followed in the strategy process. The strategy document shows us what our target areas must be if we are to ensure competitive businesses for the future. These are in principle as follows: • A general need for change and a higher rate of inno- vation within businesses. • A reduction in petroleum-related activities with con- sequences for large parts of the maritime industry. • The green shift and its requirements on sustainability and reduced environmental impact. -
