Exciting opportunities for building and design in the medium and long term are increasing in the rapidly urbanizing countries of China, India and the Middle East. Architects are working in global practices in cross-cultural teams like never before. While Japanese design, sense of space, and attention to detail in traditional as well as contemporary architecture are admired around the world, architectural practice and the building industry have historically evolved here in a way unique to Japan. This article discusses the features of architectural practice in Japan that are different from those of other countries, and examines the opportunities in preparing Japanese students for the global opportunities today. Architecture straddles the disciplines of social sciences, engineer- ished product, and takes legal responsibility for it. However, in ing and art, and is best when it succeeds on all three fronts.
