WELCOME TO THE Contents 2009 INDOOR 2 Sydney Players Selected for NSW 3 Welcome/Contents HOCKEY SEASON 4 Sydney Competition Calendar 5 Registration Form The home of indoor hockey for the last two decades has been the Olympic Park . Unfortunately, 6 Junior Individual Player indoor hockey has been shafted for more profitable events Registration Form and after 20 years of loyalty to this venue we must now look to decentralisation. It is anticipated that several suitable 7 Oz Sports Clinic venues will be climbed into and a system of home and away 8 Sydney Finals and Representative games utilised. We hope some smart use of the competition draws may allow two games to be played when away. This Photos will mean weekly home games and when playing away two 10 Supergirls Indoor Vet’s Story games are scheduled which should minimise the amount of travel. 11 New Uniforms and Under 9’s The committee of Sydney Indoor Hockey Association Inc 12 Representative Trial Dates would like to thank Just Hockey, Sydney Hockey Association and Hockey NSW for their continued support 13 Information on Indoor Hockey during these difficult times. Indoor Hockey is a fun sport with Competitions an exciting future and we hope you will be part of it. This our fifth addition of the SIHA magazine which is designed to 14 2008 Finals Results inform all interested hockey people of the coming competitions and events, together with providing some 15 History newsworthy articles.

As always the committee of SIHA has a strong focus on junior expansion and therefore with the help of Oz Sports, two school holiday camps have been planned this year; one at Hurstville and one at Ryde. In addition, the grading day on the first week of competitions will still be maintained to ensure all teams are competitive which is far more enjoyable for the players. Our representative campaign is also subject to change with the trials brought forward to the middle of September. There will no doubt be some communication issues with this change as not all players will find out in this first year. It is a necessary evil as it was nearly impossible to prepare our teams in time for the State Championships which start in the middle of October. Irrespective of some difficult issues we look forward to another fun year of Indoor Hockey. SNAPSHOTS OF SYDNEY FINALS & SYDNEY REPS Snapshots continued …. THE SUPERGIRLS INDOOR VETERANS’ STORY ... - IT TOOK 3 YEARS FOR THE ULTIMATE SUCCESS !

Our first grade Women’s Vets win the 2009 State Championship held at Niagara Park on the Central Coast. It was three years in the making where the same team, with just a few changes in the line up over that period, saw the ultimate success. Two years in a row we made the grand final and came up short of a win so this third year made the victory even sweeter. The frustrating bit . . . Year 2007 we lost in golden goal during extra time where the Illawarra striker pushed the ball onto our keeper’s kickers and a freaky deflection saw the ball jump up over the keeper and loop down into the net.

Year 2008 we were one down in the dying minutes when Sydney was awarded a penalty stroke. A goal would have taken us into extra time and from there it is anybody’s game. Unfortunately a strong flick was propelled but hit the post so a 50mm lump of wood got in the way of a possible victory. The happy bit . . . Year 2009 was equally a tough competition but Sydney made the Grand Final. Yet again we found ourselves in golden goal territory. After the previous two years being in similar circumstances you could not help being a tad worried. The girls, however, held their resolve and the talented Michelle Kennedy slotted the golden goal off a short corner. A good win for Sydney achieved by a great team! UNIFORMS — A RAGING SUCCESS THE NEW SYDNEY INDOOR HOCKEY REPRESENTATIVE

UNIFORMS WERE A RAGING SUCCESS - but it did not Dianne happen by chance. Jason Thanks to the dedication of Jason and Dianne Mayne the new uniforms became a reality. The Dianne Contribution . . . It costs a lot of money to fund enough uniforms to cater for U13, 15, 17, Opens and Vets for both genders. A high percentage of the money was generated and donated by running BBQs at Bunnings. For many weeks Dianne was up at the crack of dawn and down at the shops buying or picking up sponsored supplies. BBQs were run all day Saturday or Sunday whenever the venue at Lidcombe was available. It takes determination, dedication and a lot of good will to give up so many weekends for the benefit of Indoor Hockey. The Jason Contribution . . . The design and style were all Jason’s work. The traditional colours of blue and gold were to be maintained as much as possible which required some extensive creative work to get the right image. In addition to making the uniforms look good many hours of consideration went into the combination of sizes and the numbering systems. Naturally you want to minimise the overall number of uniforms to keep the costs in check but still cater for all players.

There are not enough words of thanks that can be bestowed on this couple. We just hope they enjoy seeing the uniforms they brought to reality on the Sydney players strutting their stuff at the NSW championships. They can be proud of their achievement or as the young people would say, “THEY DUN GOOD”! UNDER 9’s . . . Under 9 indoor hockey is a wonderful game to watch with all the little people running around in their uniforms looking so cute. It is such an important life experience - where parents live the game on the side line and children enjoy the participation of a team sport. It’s a great contribution to family and community spirit. U9’s is also arguably the most important age group as it contributes greatly to the ranks of future hockey players. During this young age children try 100 different sports and those who find hockey suits them continue, very often, for life. The hockey community in general needs to focus their development activities as much as possible on this age group because, if the kids don’t try it, they will never know if they like it.
