    The Outpouring for ‘Geshem’ by Cantor Moshe Haschel The Mishna (Rosh Hashanah, chapter 1 mishna 2) tells us that on Sukkot the world is judged for rain. The Talmud (Taanit 7a) says in the name of Rav Yosef that the world’s dependence on rain for its sustenance is so total that rainfall is compared to the revival of the dead. This is the reason says Rav Yosef, why the Rabbis put the phrase – ‘ Mashiv Haruach uMorid Hageshem’ – ‘He makes the wind to blow and the rain to fall’ in the second blessing of the Amida which speaks about Divine Might and concludes with ‘Blessed are You, Lord, who revives the dead’. The Talmud (Rosh Hashanah 16a) brings Rabbi Yehuda’s view that the world is judged on all aspects already on Rosh Hashanah but the final judgment is sealed for each feature only in its specific time; for grain on Pesach, for fruits of trees on Shavuot and for rain on Sukkot. Rabbi Yehoshua Ibn Shuaib (13th century Spain) in his work ‘Derashot al haTorah’ (derasha for Shemini Atzeret) explains this notion in connection with rain that the amount of rain that will fall during the coming year is in fact determined already on Rosh Hashanah. However, on Sukkot it is decided where i.e. on which parts of the world it would fall, and how i.e. whether it would be beneficial to the world or otherwise. This idea is reflected in the Liturgical poem ‘Af Beri’ by Rabbi Eleazar haKalir recited at the Shemini Atzeret Mussaf repetition.

    JEFFREY WOLLOCK Historic Records as Historical Records: Hersh Gross and His Boiberiker Kapelye (1927-1932)1 The Boiberiker Kapelye was a Jewish ensemble – what would today be called a “klezmer” band – active in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Although now mainly cited as an early vehicle for the great clarinetist Dave Tarras, the Boiberiker was much more. Tarras plays no major role on the three 1927 Boiberiker discs, but they are classics of klezmer artistry in their own right. Indeed, the Boiberiker, with its huge repertoire, consummate musicali- ty, creativity, and idealistic musical and cultural goals, was one of the best and most interesting klezmer ensembles ever to record. With deep roots in the conservative Hasidic traditions of Galicia and Ukraine, also at home in more modern styles, the Boiberiker was the first “klezmer band” that owed its fame to the new medium of radio. This article gives a detailed account of the ensemble’s recordings, broadcasting career, and personnel, with special emphasis on long-forgotten founder and leader Hersh Gross. It presents evi- dence indicating that the Boiberiker made additional recordings under other names. __________________________________________________________________________________ esearch on the history of klezmer music, at least in the English language, was virtually nonexistent until about 25 years ago, and only in the past decade has it R really taken off. Although it is now possible to get a basic overview of the subject, vast fields remain to be explored. Entitled Magnified and Sanctified: The Music of Jewish Prayer, the conference was the first ever International Conference on Jewish Liturgical Music in the UK , which, during the week of 16-19 June 2015, attracted an international array of leading scholars and musicians from Europe, Australia, USA and Israel to share cutting-edge research on all aspects of synagogue music past and present. The stimulating and diverse program featured an array of keynote lectures, scholarly papers, panel discussions and musical performances, and was followed by the 10th Annual European Cantors Convention weekend. The conference, presented by the European Cantor’s Association and the music department of Leeds University, was one of the inaugural events in the three-year international project ‘Performing the Jewish Archive’ (2015-2018) which has seen several major conferences and festivals across the world. Spearheaded by Dr Stephen Muir, Senior Lecturer at Leeds and Conference Director, the project has given rise to revivals of and research into much music lost during the period of the Holocaust and Jewish migrations in the 20th century.

Dr. Spector’s groundbreaking research has assured that dwindling traditions from India, Yemen, Persia, Egypt, Syria, and other remote communities are well documented through recordings, photographs, and films. ABOUT THE SPEAKER Dr. Geoffrey Goldberg is rabbi of the Jewish Center of Forest Hills West in Forest Hills, New York. Both an experienced rabbi and musicologist, Dr. Goldberg has taught at universities such as the University of Rochester, Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion, and Tel-Aviv University. His publications include a number of articles on the history of congregational music in German and US synagogues. Dr. Goldberg received a BA in Medieval and Modern History from the University of Birmingham in Birmingham, England; rabbinic ordination from Leo Baeck College in London; cantorial investiture at JTS; an MA in Musicology from New York University; and a PhD in Jewish Musicology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
