Withcontinuedsupportfromstates,institutionsandscholars,weareproudtoreachthe 20-year mark this year.roughthisgenerationofsuccess,theprogramhasachievedmanymilestones:Ithasservedmorethan 1,140scholarsand,mostimportant,hasgraduatedalmost700Ph.D.s—80percentofwhomareemployed ineducation.ButtheU.S.DepartmentofEducation(IPEDSCompletionSurvey)continuestoprovidehard evidencethattheneedforminorityfacultyisst2illpresent—anditshouldch0allengeallofustodomore, especiallystatelegislativeandeducationalleadership. eSREB-StateDoctoralScholarsProgramhelpsputminoritiesatthefrontofcollegeclassrooms.Reflecting itsmottoof“morethanacheckandahandshake,”theprogramprovidesmultiplelayersofsupport,prepara - tionandencouragementtoassistscholarsinearningtheirdoctoraldegreesandproceedingonthepathtoa successfulacademiccareer. ItisimportanttorecognizethebenefitsthatSREBstatesgainfromtheprogram’ssuccess.States: l Savetimeandmoney .SREBPh.D.candidatesfinish,onaverage,twoyearsfasterthanthe averageforallU.S.Ph.D.candidates. l Produceahighlytrainedandskilledtalentpoolforthestate’sworkforceandeconomy .Program graduatesconductcutting-edgeresearchandbringinexternalgrantfunding.Seventypercent ofprogramgraduatesworkinSREBstates,boostingstaterevenue. l Createrolemodels .Programgraduatesmorecloselyreflectthecampusandgeneralpopulations andencouragemoreminoritystudentstosucceed. l Recruit .Statecolleges,universitiesandresearchlabscanrecruitfromahighlyqualifiedpoolof minorityPh.D.graduatesandutilizetheprogram’sonlinedirectoryofscholarswhoareinawide rangeoffieldstoidentifypotentialjobcandidates. l Develophighlytrainedandwell-educatedleaders .Graduatesprovideskilledservicestotheir institutionsandcommunities. l Improvecampusclimate .Minorityfacultyhelpblack,Hispanicandwomenstudentsfeel lessisolatedwhentheyseetheirrace,ethnicityandgenderreflectedinpeopleinleadership positions. In2013,11SREBstatesaresupportingmorethan300doctoralscholars,buttheprogramcouldserveeven morestatesandstudents.WecontinuetoencourageallSREBstatestoparticipateintheprogram,support morestudentsandreapthebenefits.WearepleasedtocongratulateparticipatingSREBinstitutions,states, scholars,programgraduatesandprogramstaffonajobwelldone.
