HISTORICAL THEORETICAL BACKGROUND 1.1.1. The beginnings: J.L. Austin The origin of performative speech acts as we know them today dates back to the William James Lectures, the linguistic-philosophical theories devised and delivered by J.L. Austin at Harvard University in 1955, and collected into a series of lectures entitled How to do things with words, posthumously published in 1962. Austin was one of the most influential philosophers of his time. In these lectures, he provided a thorough exploration of performative speech acts, which was an extremely innovative area of study in those days. In the following pages, Austin’s main ideas (together with some comments by other authors) will be presented. 1.1.1.1. Constative – performative distinction In these lectures, Austin begins by making a clear distinction between constative and performative utterances. -

In other words, it is a capacity of both human and nonhuman subjects to produce a specific effect. Discourse Refers to implicit, taken-for-granted, and often unspoken sets of ideas and ways of knowing that are imbued with power. As a set of ideas and ways of knowing, discourse gives meaning to written and spoken language. Identity Is an articulation of one’s social affiliation, both individually and as a group. Materiality Refers to the objects and substances that constitute matterdhuman and nonhuman bodies, nature, elements, and things. Representation Is a process of giving meaning to objects and things through linguistic signs and symbols. Sociospatial practices Refer to activities such as walking, talking, driving, playing, and numerous other everyday practices that produce and reproduce both society and space. Space In human geography is not a fixed and bounded physical location, but a set of complex and intertwined social relations that take place in, and shape, the physical dimensions of space. Some authors differentiate between space and place; they define place as a process of ascribing meaning to undifferentiated space. Others, however, use both terms interchangeably. Spatiality Signifies an attribute or a feature that is related to space. In human geography, the term refers to the way space is implicated in social life. -

Accessible 8am-5pm Monday-Friday. Course Objectives: It is well-established that men and women may differ in the language that they use as well as in the way that they use language. In this course we will examine the ways that sex, gender and language interact, specifically in speech communities in the United States. Specifically, we will: • evaluate various explanations for differentiated language use between men and women including gender- and sex-based explanations • evaluate issues of gender inequality in language use • examine various theories of gender, sex and sexuality • consider how concepts of gender, sex and sexuality are shaped by discourse • use linguistic analyses of conversational interaction to examine some of the ways that gender, sex and sexuality influence language use • examine and evaluate a diverse body of research from sociolinguistics, anthropology, gender studies and psychology that bear on these issues This course is designed to fulfill the GEC second writing course requirement. As a result, an additional important objective of this course is to help you further develop your skills of written and oral expression. This will be done through specific instruction on writing and presenting by the instructor, informal and formal writing assignments, an oral presentation, and short homework assignments focusing on language usage. Feedback on your writing from the instructor and other members of the class is incorporated into the course but you should feel free to ask for additional input if needed. -

AMERICAN ANTHROPOLOGIST Linguistic Anthropology Linguistic Anthropology in 2013: Super-New-Big Angela Reyes ABSTRACT In this essay, I discuss how linguistic anthropological scholarship in 2013 has been increasingly con- fronted by the concepts of “superdiversity,” “new media,” and “big data.” As the “super-new-big” purports to identify a contemporary moment in which we are witnessing unprecedented change, I interrogate the degree to which these concepts rely on assumptions about “reality” as natural state versus ideological production. I consider how the super-new-big invites us to scrutinize various reconceptualizations of diversity (is it super?), media (is it new?), and data (is it big?), leaving us to inevitably contemplate each concept’s implicitly invoked opposite: “regular diversity,” “old media,” and “small data.” In the section on “diversity,” I explore linguistic anthropological scholarship that examines how notions of difference continue to be entangled in projects of the nation-state, the market economy, and social inequality. In the sections on “media” and “data,” I consider how questions about what constitutes lin- guistic anthropological data and methodology are being raised and addressed by research that analyzes new and old technologies, ethnographic material, semiotic forms, scale, and ontology. I conclude by questioning the extent to which it is the super-new-big itself or the contemplation about the super-new-big that produces perceived change in the world. This term and the related concept of performativity have subsequently been interpreted in numerous ways by social scientists and philosophers such as Lyotard, Butler, Callon, or Barad, leading to the co-existence of several foundational perspectives on performativity. In this paper we review and evaluate critically how organization and management theory (OMT) scholars have used these perspectives, and how the power of performativity has, or has not, stimulated new theory-building. In performing a historical and critical review of performativity in OMT, our analysis reveals the uses, abuses and under- uses of the concept by OMT scholars. It also reveals the lack of both organizational conceptualizations of performativity and analysis of how performativity is organized. Ultimately our aim is to provoke a ‘performative turn’ in OMT by unleashing the power of the performativity concept to generate new and stronger organizational theories. This raises the question how does the construction of gender work. Judith Butler proposed that gender is performative. It will be organized as a 3-hour seminar. The first half of the seminar will focus on theories of performativity and speech acts since J.L. Austin. We will also discuss their influence on social science ontology, epistemology, and methodology. The second part will focus on examples of how scholars used performativity in various fields of social science. We will especially examine studies on citizenship, state, development, data, and security that exemplify performativity as/of methods. Pre course preparation: It is essential that you read the following eight articles for preparation. The articles for the first part for understanding performativity as a concept. The articles in the second part understanding examples of its usage in interdisciplinary social science fields. There are also eights recommended books. If you make yourself familiar with them especially with Austin (1962) you will get more out of the course. 1. It begins by examining the idea of gender performativity in the work of Judith Butler, tracing its development from her earliest writings through to Gender Trouble and Bodies that Matter, and showing how Butler’s initial argument draws from phenomenology, and from performance studies (where acts are understood in theatrical terms). This is followed by a discussion of gender understood ethnomethodologically as a type of routine performance or form of “doing”. The second half of the article focuses on linguistic theories of performativity, derived from J. L. Austin and Jacques Derrida, and how they have been used by feminists such as Catharine MacKinnon, Rae Langton, and Judith Butler to illustrate pornography and hate-speech. After a discussion of the performativity of pornography, the focus turns to citationality, resignification, and “talking-back”. In 1990 a book was published that changed feminist theory profoundly. The book was Gender Trouble and its author was Judith Butler. The transformations it wrought on feminist understandings of the relationship between sex and gender centered on the effect of one of its central concepts.
