IT’S ALL ABOUT TEAMWORK! Mr. Matita – Sportcouncil • Because the Phalaborwa municipality is supported by the Sefapane Soccer Foundation (SSF), and focuses on different development levels (<12 , <14 ,<17), its development is much better than the other four municipalities in this district. • A child that plays sport is safer from criminal activities. • A child who plays sport, is a child who is fit and will improve its concentration in school. These children are more disciplined, obedient and know all about teamwork and self management. Who are we? The SSF is an independent non-profit organization, and we believe we can improve the lives of children in Sou- th-Africa with football. The current focus of the founda- tion is on children up to 17 years old linging in the town and townships of Phalaborwa in South Africa. The strength of our foundation lies in the fact that we do everything by ourselves. Where several people pick up most of the money needed in the Netherlands, in Africa, in collaboration with local residents who are familiar with the culture, we focus on the people and the real possibilities of organizing the competition. Our goal is to be with the children, parents and the community, and create a lasting impact in the lives of children in South Africa. History The SSF was founded in 2009. During the creation, we called the foundation Sefapane Football League . It was started by entrepreneurs Hans van Avendonk, Jos van den Broek of event agency Fijnevent and Joris Bertens, owner and operator of Sefapane lodge in Phalaborwa (Limpopo). It all started with the sponsorship of the team in 2007, but within two years, with the help of the Sefapane Community Development Fund Sefapane football was born and ten teams played in two different townships around Phalaborwa . The focus of the football league is to keep the children up to 17 years from the streets through football. SSF provides the teams with the necessary attributes such as soccer balls, shoes and uniforms . This was made possible with the help of ten enthusiastic companies that wanted to sponsor. Now in 2014 most of these sponsors are still active. More and more companies are joining as a SSF-sponsor . History In 2011 SAFA (South African Football Association) showed interest in SSF, which in itself is a big compliment. SAFA decided to adopt the league of SSF and confirmed that the fondation had been well organized. For this reason the founders changed the name of Sefapane Football League into Sefapane Soccer Foundation. From now on, our goal was to work on the competition itself and to change from organiser into supervisor . Now in 2014, there are over 1200 children actively playing football. This has been a great result. Nevertheless, we would like to grow due to inspiring volunteers and enthusiastic sponsors so we will be able to offer more and more children a better future by way of football! Mission and vision Mission: To develop passion for football games as for life. We believe that every child should have a chance upon a good future. Through the power of soccer we create a safe place for children to sport, make friends, stay on the right track and encourage them to strive for a better future. With our program they get a structured life, learn about important values in life and we create inspiring role models that they can live up to. Vision: To inspire as many people as we can to participate in our cause, to let as many children as possible play soccer in Phalaborwa. Although already 1200 children play soccer in the Sefapane Soccer League, we dream to reach many more of them. Facts and figures about SSF in 2014 • Three townships are involved: Namakgale, Lulekane, Selwane. • 27 Football clubs within the Sefapane Soccer Foundation. • Every football club has three teams of different age groups, under 12, under 14 and under 17. That means that there are 81 football teams playing in SSF. • 1215 Active football playing children with SSF, and this number is still increasing. • More than 50 local volunteers are committed almost daily for the competition in South Africa. Phalaborwa has approximately 150,000 inhabitants and, it is popular for tourists because of its entrance to the Kruger National Park. Additionally Phalaborwa is also very lively with lots of jobs because of the mines in this city. Many minerals are found here in the land, with the largest exportproduct being copper. Briefly, Phalaborwa is an area with a beautiful combination of industrial and residential opportunities and natural bush fields. Namakgale is the biggest and most developed township 12 km outside of Phalaborwa with approximately 37.400 inhabitants. This township has one formalized soccer stadium. SSF is sponsoring 8 soccer clubs in this township, which means 24 teams in Namakgale. Lulekane is a fast developing township 13 km outside of Phalaborwa with approximately 15.700 inhabitants. SSF is sponsoring 11 soccer clubs in this township, which means 33 teams in Lulekane. Selwane is a township almost 50 km outside or Phalaborwa with approximately 14.800 inhabitants. This township is very under-developed and could use some more support. There are no formalized sporting facilities in the Selwane area except for poorly maintained and under-utilized soccer pitches. In 2012, 8 clubs in Selwane attended the Sefapane Soccer Foundation, which means 24 teams are playing in this Township. The social aspects of SSF Interviews with players, parents, coaches, mayor, police and other interested in Phalaborwa showed that SSF is a major contributor in keeping the straight path for the children. Children play with SSF five to six days a week. Hence, they are positively motivated for sport and have less or no time left to be with crime or using drugs. In ad- dition, sports also contributes to healthier children who will perform better at school . SSF future Within the organization of SSF in Phalaborwa , there are three specific aims for the next few years: • More state or national reputation in South Africa • Working with a professional football club • Emphasize football is also interesting for girls For SSF in the Netherlands , the focus is no longer only on business sponsors but also on the enthusiasm of Dutch amateur football clubs to actively sponsor SSF. ANBI-status Since 2011 SSF has the Dutch ANBI-status (Algemeen Nut Beogende Instellingen). With the acquisition of the so-called ANBI the foundation may be seen as a mature, honest and transparent organization. It also indicates that all the money donated to SSF benefits the actual purpose SSF stands for. The criteria for endorsment by the ANBI has its main focus on the organisation, the board, the structure of administration, and the declared and effective mission that needs to serve the common interest. Being an ANBI endorsed organisation, not only puts us on the official “ charities company” list, it also enables the organisation and its sponsors to benefit from legal tax deducted sponsorship. If you want to know more about the meaning of the ANBI-status and the tax benefits that come with it, please visit: http://anbi.nl/ Our objectives Shortterm goals: • In 2015 SSF will have at least five additional clubs • All active teams of SSF will be provided with new uniforms in June 2014 • Before the end of 2014 SSF has ensured that there are no more children who have to play their matches on barefeet . • Before the end of 2014, every coach will attend a first aid course. Every team will have its first aid kit. Our objectives Longterm goals: • In 2015 SSF must organize a partnership with a professional football club, to motivate the children and perhaps offer SSF a football career up to the next level. • In 2016 a women’s competition will start in one of the three mentioned townships. • In 2018 there will no longer be matches on clay.
