Various other events are mentioned in passing, Timescape as student riots and an event of nuclear terrorism against New York City which took place before the events of the novel. This thread follows a group of scientists in the United Kingdom connected with the University of Cambridge and their attempts to warn the past of the impending disaster by sending tachyon -induced messages to the astronomical position the Earth occupied in — Given the faster-than-light nature of the tachyon, these messages will effectively reach the past. The second thread is set in the University of California, San Diego UCSDin La Jolla, Timescapein where a young scientist, Gordon Bernstein, discovers Timescape noise in a physics experiment relating to Timescape resonance and indium antimonide. He and his student assistant, Albert Cooper also likely based on Timescape author and his experiences at UCSDdiscover that the noise is Timescape in bursts timed to form Morse code.

The Second Edition really took off when Toni agreed to write a shortened version of her biography as the Introduction. Also thanks to Toni for the selection of Tucker photos she went me by email. Apologies in advance to the photographers — perhaps some of them will recognise their photos when they see them in print and can let me know. HELENA BINNS, who was the official photographer for Aussiecon I, Melbourne, 1975. She scanned and sent me a disk of the original colour photo of Tucker at the convention, as well as photos of other famous people looking impossibly young and hirsute.     PIHLIGHTERS For the first time in 21 years, I'm stuck with an Editorial without anything co say. All the good bits (all the bits that are interesting to me) go in 'I Must Be Talking to My Friends' (The Metaph sicil teview). In this, my magazine about sf ano fantasy, I don't have much in general to say about these genres that I haven't said many times before. You know my line: ignore the junk; search out the good stuff; tell us what you find. I've enlisted three columnists this time -- Dave Langford from England, Mike Tolley from Adelaide, and Colin Steele from Canberra. I won't turn away anybody else who wants to join the crew. My own column can wait till next issue. Response to SF Conwentary 67 has been good. Some optimistic souls have even thrown a subscription into their letters to keep the revived beast on its feet. Maybe it's slipping. Everything in this issue was on diskette by September 1989. Come March 1990 before the issue appears.
