W artykule na podstawie jednostkowych przykładów zostały przedstawione losy Amerykanów biorących udział w wojnie domowej w Hiszpanii (2800 żołnierzy) po stronie republikanów. Wbrew amerykańskiej ustawie o neutralności i oficjalnym zakazom amerykańscy ochotnicy nielegalnie, różnymi kanałami przerzutowymi, przedostawali się, by zasilić szeregi Batalionu „Abraham Lincoln” i Batalionu „George Washington”, wchodzących w skład XV Brygady Międzynarodowej, zwanej potocznie Brygadą Abrahama Lincolna. Grupa ochotników amerykańskich była zróżnicowana zarówno pod względem statusu społecznego, wykształcenia, jak i pochodzenia narodowego, tzn. korzeni narodowych. Wśród nich byli zarówno zaangażowani, ideowo wyszkoleni w Moskwie dowódcy (R.H. Merriman) czy komunistyczni instruktorzy (S. Nelson), jak i młodzi ludzie, żądni przygód, podatni na propagandę. Byli nauczyciele, artyści, dziennikarze (J.Ph. Lardner), pisarze (Ph.L. Detro), aktorzy (A. Bessie), a także farmerzy, robotnicy (D.M. Reiss) i bezrobotni. Byli biali i Afroamerykanie (O. Law), mężczyźni i kobiety, Słowianie w pierwszym pokoleniu (M. Markovics) i obywatele USA pochodzenia żydowskiego (M. Wolff). Odrębną, specyficzną grupę stanowili piloci (A. Baumler, F. Tinker, J. Allison) oraz lekarze i pielęgniarki. W Hiszpanii, po krótkim, zupełnie niewystarczającym treningu, otrzymywali rozkaz do wyjścia na front, gdzie ginęli (800 zabitych), odnosili rany, dostawali się do niewoli, a nawet dezerterowali (Ph. Crane, B. Abramofsky). Ci, którym udało się przeżyć, w chwili zakończenia działań wojennych powracali do USA z minimalną pomocą administracji F.D. Roosevelta. Ich dalsze losy były nie mniej złożone i dramatyczne, uwarunkowane politycznie (okres maccartyzmu). -

International Brigade Plaque Middlesbrough Town Hall Prelude In Spain on the evening of 17th July 1936, a pre-planned Army revolt began; rebel soldiers disarmed Officers loyal to the Republican government, before declaring a region free from governmental control. The army’s rising was supported by the fascist Falange Party and some Civil Guard units, who often acted on their own. In Morocco, Mallorca, and some other areas the rising was generally successful. However, in most areas, including the major cities of Madrid and Barcelona, the rebels were met with bitter and effective resistance from loyal members of the Civil Guard and from workers’ militias who seized arms despite government instructions. As the air force and the navy remained loyal to the government the resistance in the major centres made it likely that the army coup would fail, as had an army coup in 1932. This time was different however, the unruly officers received significant support, the most noteworthy being the British Government: MI6 operative Major Hugh Pollard charted a plane, piloted by another MI6 operative Cecil Bebb, they collected Franco, effectively in exile on the Canary Islands and flew him to Morocco. The German Air force (Luftwaffe) then transported the 18,000 strong, brutally trained Spanish Army of Africa from their barracks in Morocco the short distance across the Mediterranean to the Spanish mainland, where as head of the only unified army in Spain Franco quickly replaced the imprisoned de Rivera as leader of the Falange Party, proclaiming himself Head of State and Government under the title El Caudillo. -

CITY, UNIVERSITY OF LONDON Cataloguing Songs at the Marx Memorial Library - Creating an identity for items of musical works within a non- music special collection Sarah E. Crompton October 2019 Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of MSc in Library and Information Science Supervisor: Dr. Lyn Robinson 1 Abstract What do you do if a song appears in a box of library donations for a non-music library? Send it somewhere else? Songs have text but not like a book has text: to make songs compute with the system, might they need some kind of special ‘music’ treatment? Is there a musician on the team? This dissertation explores reasons why non-music libraries are the best place for some music items, but also why they might sink without trace by being ‘other’ to the main collection. It looks at how defining an ‘identity’ for a minority music collection and relating it to its wider collection could benefit a special collection otherwise known for its non-music subject areas. The methodology parallels an ‘evidence based library and information practice’ (EBLIP) ‘practitioner-research’ perspective to resolve questions. The research progresses through stages of ‘discussion, assessment, reflection, decision, action, revision’ towards eventual findings and practical outcomes. Focusing on songs, ‘people’s songs’ are defined, highlighting their many differences to the formally constructed forms of classical ‘art’ songs. The findings examine ‘people’s songs’ from the perspectives of documentation, information search and retrieval, and concepts of identity. Concepts of ‘borrowing’, ‘branding’, ‘currency’, ‘fix-ity’, ‘oral documents’ and ‘use-intentionality’ scrutinise the question of identity of this particular set of ‘people’s songs’ to its eventual conclusion. -

Despite extensive exposure to war No Pasaran! is a touring exhibition of photography and the 'image fatigue' the work of seven photographers organised Victim of the Bombing of Lerida by Augusti Centelles Estremadura Front, 1936 by Hans Namuth Georg Reisner by the Arnolfini Gallery in Bristol. Close inspection reveals some important differ- ences in style and subject matter. Clearly everyone visited the front, but Capa and Taro worked there extensively; Centelles is remarkable for portraiture; Seymour became internationally famous for work on civilian daily life during the war. Catalan photographers Campana and Centelles were immediately involved. Others went to Spain for different reasons, but chose to stay on because of their sympathy with the republican cause. The work was risky. Gerda Taro, one of few women war photographers, left Germany in 1933 only to be killed in action in Spain in 1937. -
Woody Guthrie's Songs Against Franco 1
Woody Guthrie Annual, 4 (2018): Kaufman, Guthrie’s Songs Against Franco Woody Guthrie’s Songs Against Franco 1 Will Kaufman Woody Guthrie has sometimes been mis-credited with the composition of “Jarama Valley,” perhaps the most popular English-language song to have emerged from the Spanish Civil War. It is true that Guthrie recorded a version of the song composed by the Scottish fighter, Alex McDade, who was killed at the Battle of Brunete in July of 1937. McDade’s original version was a four-stanza ode to the British Battalion of the Fifteenth International Brigade, first published in The Book of the XV International Brigade in 1938. 2 Guthrie’s version is an adaptation celebrating the Abraham Lincoln Battalion, the main American contingent of the International Brigade. Guthrie recorded “Jarama Valley” for his producer, Moses Asch, sometime between 1946 and 1948, but it was not released until 1962 on the Folkways album Songs of the Spanish Civil War, vol. 2.3 It is perhaps ironic that the Spanish Civil War song for which Guthrie is best known is one that he did not write. One further Guthrie-penned ode, “Antyfascist Steve,” written in honor of Lincoln brigadier Steve Nelson in 1953, has only latterly attracted notice.4 Thus, until now, only two songs have been known to have marked Guthrie’s musical commentary on the Spanish Civil War. However, a significant cache of previously unseen songs has now come to light. In the Woody Guthrie Archives in Tulsa, Oklahoma, there sits a thin makeshift notebook comprising the lyrics to some ten songs, its cover decorated with a bright red watercolor wash bearing the script, “SONGS AGAINST FRANCO.” Guthrie never published or recorded these songs, but they are important—not simply as reflections of Guthrie’s fierce anti-fascism, which is common enough knowledge, but as evidence of a highly conscious and poignant artistic struggle. -

This year’s San Francisco Bay Area reunion featured Patriots Act, written and directed by Peter Glazer with musical direction by Bruce Barthol. The show was performed by members of the San Francisco Mime Troupe on February 29 and included a stellar performance by veteran folk singer Barbara Dane. Don’t miss the New York performance on May 2.
