Yocum This dissertation examines the conception of sin and the practice of penance among Catholics in the United States from 1955 to 1975. It begins with a brief historical account of sin and penance in Christian history, indicating the long tradition of performing penitential acts in response to the identification of one’s self as a sinner. The dissertation then considers the Thomistic account of sin and the response of penance, which is understood both as a sacrament (which destroys the sin) and as a virtue (the acts of which constitute the matter of the sacrament but also extend to include non-sacramental acts). This serves to provide a framework for understanding the way Catholics in the United States identified sin and sought to amend for it by use of the sacrament of penance as well as non-sacramental penitential acts of the virtue of penance. -

Hege Thank you for the invitation to join you today in your commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation. It’s encouraging to see such a good group out on a fall day in the beautiful city of Columbus! I have three areas I would like to lift up as the topics of my reflections today: Europe and Germany at the time of the Reformation, Luther’s life and thought, and Luther, the flawed giant. We would need several hours to go into detail on any one of these topics, of course, but I hope that we can do them some justice in the time we have together. I encourage you to share your questions and comments at the end of each session this morning, and I look forward to a productive time together. -
Francisco António D´Almeida and the Serenata Genre in Early and Mid Eigtheenth-Century Portugal
Francisco António d´Almeida and the Serenata Genre in Early and Mid Eigtheenth-Century Portugal. The music manuscript CIC 12 from the National Library of Portugal contains thirteen arias by Francisco António d´Almeida (1702-1755?), one of the most important Portuguese composers of the first half of the 18th century. Five of them have been identified as being part of the serenata Gl´Incanti d´Alcina of 1730. There are also eight arias from another serenata, Il vaticinio di Pallade e di Mercurio, staged a year later, in 1731. To study the libretti which were the sources of the identification of these arias and then the music present in the CIC 12 manuscript is of fundamental importance in understanding the serenata genre during the reign of King D. João V of Portugal. Consequently, this paper intends to enlarge our knowledge of the formal and stylistic structure of d´Almeida´s serenate and also to give an overview of the performing practices and the courtly and aristocratic significance associated with this genre. Particularly in the field of the study of Portuguese dramatic music of this period, the understanding of the serenata is of primary importance, since it was the principal musical event performed on courtly occasions. Its study gives us today a rich picture of the characteristics of musical life in the court of D. João V, and helps us simultaneously to understand the differences, in this period, between the genre of the serenata and major genres such as opera and cantata. The term serenata, as applied to 17th and 18th century Italy, means a cantata-like work performed in courtly or aristocratic surroundings to celebrate dynastic occasions or political events, or, as in Portugal, anniversaries and name-days of the Royal Family. -

Part of the library holdings followed the royal family to Brazil after 1807 and several of these remained there after the court returned to Portugal in 1822. The printed part of those holdings constituted the basis of the National Library of Rio de Janeiro. -

Name: __________________________ MartinProtestant Luther (1483 - 1546) Reformation Martin Luther was a German monk and teacher of theology (religion). He troubled about the possibility of not going to heaven. He led a strict life, but was worried about sin. Luther read the writings of early Christian theologians, including St. Augustine, and the Bible. He found the answer he was looking for in Paul's Letter to the Romans (Romans 1:17 - "The righteous shall by his faith.") Only faith (in the ultimate goodness of Jesus), not good deeds, could save a person. No good works, rituals, etc. would save a person if they did not believe. Martin Luther prepares to burn the papal bull. Overall, Luther was a rather crude man. He had no trouble with talking about taking up arms against those who opposed him. He also saw fit to use foul language to combat evil. For example, he dismissed the Jewish rabbis' interpretations of Scripture as "Jewish piss and sh_ _." He thought his physical ailments were caused by the devil, who was trying to stop him. Before Martin Luther died, when he was very ill, he told his wife, "I am fed up with the world, and it with me. I am like a ripe stool, and the world is like a gigantic anus, and so we're about to let go of each other." The Beginnings Indulgences Tetzel, a friar, sold indulgences. Doctrines of indulgences taught that Christ and the saints had stored up a treasury of merit. Indulgences could reduce the amount of time spent in purgatory; did not bring forgiveness of sin. -

WHAT PRICE INDULGENCES? TRENT AND TODAY Pope Paul VI believed it useful to promote the practice of indulgences. Indulgences, the Pope says, aid the individual in his own personal conversion and further the reconciliation of all men.1 Today, when the practice has very largely disappeared, one can well ask if the practice can really be so meaningful for our modern Church. Also, is it not with mixed feelings that an ecumenist has to look at a practice that Luther and the Reform found so repugnant? To understand what an indulgence is and can mean for the modern Church, this paper offers a survey of attitudes manifested in Tridentine debate on the matter. This small contribution is significant, I believe, because it reveals the theology out of which came the Catholic Church's most authoritative position on indulgences.2 And I find that the under standing gleaned from scanning this debate lends support to the inter pretation given to an indulgence by Poschmann and Rahner.3 QUESTIONS FOR DEBATE AT TRENT Shortly after promulgating its decree on sacraments in general (March 3,1547), the Council of Trent convened for a time at Bologna (March 25, 1547 to Sept. 13,1549). On June 19,1547, the papal legates handed several questions to the congregation of consultant theologians (these consultant 1 Cf. The Five Solae of the Reformation II. The Roman Catholic View of Justification Date: June 9, 2013 Sola: Sola Fide Aim: To understand the historical Roman Catholic view of justification by faith. A. Introduction The Five Solas were the rallying points of the Protestant Reformation. • Sola Fide = Faith Alone • Sola Gratia = Faith Alone • Solus Christus = Christ Alone • Sola Scriptura = Scripture Alone • Soli Deo Gloria = Glory to God Alone The Protestant Reformation was in large part a controversy over how a man or woman is justified by God. The Roman Catholic Church argued that man is not justified by faith alone and apart from other works. The Protestant Reformers argued that man is justified by faith alone and apart from any other works or merit by man. The Protestant assertion that salvation is sola fide or through faith alone was a central issue in the sixteenth century Protestant Reformation. The debate over man’s justification before God was a significant issue in the 16th century. The question of man’s justification receives less attention today because of the dominance of relativism. The biblical truth of man’s condemnation outside of God’s justification needs to be preached and taught in the modern church. Many in the church do not truly believe in the doctrine of justification by faith alone and therefore do not emphasize it. The Gospel’s emphasis on the deliverance of man from God’s wrath has been forgotten in many Christian circles. The Gospel does not simply deliver us from bad habits, addictions, social failure, psychological deficiency, and broken relationships. -
