Cootamundra War Memorial
COOTAMUNDRA WAR MEMORIAL ALBERT PARK – HOVELL STREET COOTAMUNDRA WORLD WAR 1 HONOUR ROLL Compilation by Kevin Casey, Breakfast Point 2012 COOTAMUNDRA WAR MEMORIAL – WORLD WAR 1 A marble obelisk and other memorials have been erected in Albert Park in memory of those citizens of Cootamundra and District who served and died in the defence of Australia during times of conflict. The names of many of those who served in World Wars 1 and 2 are engraved and highlighted in gold on the obelisk. This account has been prepared to provide a background to the men associated with the Cootamundra district who served and died in World War 1. While it is acknowledged that an exhaustive list of local men who served in the war has not been compiled, this account briefly highlights the family and military backgrounds of those who did and who are recorded on the obelisk. Other men not listed on the obelisk but who were associated with the district and who also served and died in the war have been identified in the course of the research. They are also included in this account. No doubt further research will identify more men. Hopefully this account will jog a few memories and inspire further research into the topic. An invitation is extended to interested people to add to the knowledge of those who served Those who served came from a wide range of backgrounds. A number of the men had long family associations with the district and many have family members who are still residents of the district. -
Holocaust Denial in Australia
ABSTRACT This paper explores the nature of Holocaust denial in Australia. It does so through a study of the beliefs and activities of the three organizations for whom Holocaust denial is a central belief: the Australian League of Rights, the Australian Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), and the Adelaide Institute. Their activities, their international ties, and their relationship with the broader racist Right in Australia is considered. The paper concludes by reflecting on the future directions and responses to Holocaust denial. INTRODUCTION The nature of Australian Holocaust denial organizations, their activities, and their place in broader far Right circles is different from denial organizations in other countries. This is explained by the dominant role of the Australian League of Rights in far Right politics, the civil liberties origins of the Australian Civil Liberties Union, the lack of sizeable neo- Nazi groups in Australia, and the dominance of anti-Aboriginal and anti- Asian issues on the far Right agenda. In addition, unlike many European countries where denial is explained as a response to their wartime collaboration with the Nazis, this motive does not exist in Australia which fought against the Nazis and her allies. Although Holocaust denial is a fringe activity in Australia, it has significantly increased over the last two decades with a concomitant growth in collaboration between Australian and overseas Holocaust deniers. This is not just a Jewish concern for Holocaust deniers have become a leading element within the racist Right with whom they share a common worldview. This is because in addition to their antisemitism, Australian Holocaust deniers expound racist and xenophobic policies and views. -

Often these actions included the destruction of villages along with part or all of their inhabitants. In March of 1943 the village of Khatyn was burned to the ground along with all of its inhabitants by Nazi troops, many of whom were from Western Ukraine. Though more than 600 Belarusian villages met a similar fate, the site of the Khatyn massacre was chosen for the construction of an expansive memorial complex in 1969. Over the course of its existence, the Khatyn memorial has become one of the most important symbols of the tremendous loss of life and suffering the Second World War inflicted on Belarus. -

The Holocaust and the Historical Revisionists
The Holocaust and the Historical Revisionists Mark Silverberg Assistant Director, Jewish Community Council, Edmonton, Alberta To put it as plainly as possible, it is common knowledge that in times of acute social crisis, anti-Semitism takes to the streets. The corollary, however, appears to be that in times of acute ideological crisis, anti-Semitism takes to the intellectual presses. It is a sad reflection on our times. Holocaust Denial Cases and Freedom of Expression in the United States
Holocaust Denial Cases and Freedom of Expression in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom By Charla Marie Boley Submitted to Central European University, Department of Legal Studies In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of … M.A. in Human Rights Supervisor: Professor Vladimir Petrovic Budapest, Hungary 2016 CEU eTD Collection Copyright 2016 Central European University CEU eTD Collection i EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Freedom of expression is an internationally recognized fundamental right, crucial to open societies and democracy. Therefore, when the right is utilized to proliferate hate speech targeted at especially vulnerable groups of people, societies face the uncomfortable question of how and when to limit freedom of expression. Holocaust denial, as a form of hate speech, poses such a problem. This particular form of hate speech creates specific problems unique to its “field” in that perpetrators cloak their rhetoric under a screen of academia and that initial responses typically discard it as absurd, crazy, and not worth acknowledging. The three common law jurisdictions of the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom all value free speech and expression, but depending on national legislation and jurisprudence approach the question of Holocaust denial differently. The three trials of Holocaust deniers Zundel, Irving, and the the Institute for Historical Review, a pseudo academic organization, caught the public’s attention with a significant amount of sensationalism. The manner in which the cases unfolded and their aftermath demonstrate that Holocaust denial embodies anti-Semitism and is a form of hate speech. Furthermore, examination of trial transcripts, media response, and existing scholarship, shows that combating denial in courtrooms can have the unintended consequence of further radicalizing deniers and swaying more to join their ranks. -
The Cases of Anthony Sawoniuk and Vladimir Katriuk
World War II Criminals in Belarusian Internet Mass-Media: The Cases of Anthony Sawoniuk and Vladimir Katriuk BY VERANIKA LAPUTSKA1 Jews have been an important component of multicultural society on the territory of Belarus for many centuries (see Appendix 1 showing the ethnic makeup of Belarus in 1897). At the beginning of the 20th century, they were also becoming increasingly involved in politics, forming several specifi cally Jewish parties and becoming members of many other emerging political parties in the Russian empire. After the Bolshevik revolution, they continued to play an important role in the development of Belarusian culture and science. According to data from the Jewish Community in Belarus, 407,000 Jews lived on Belarusian territory in 1926 (Evreiskaia obschina v Resublike Belarus’, 2004). The 1939 Soviet census recorded 375,092 Jews living on the territory of Soviet Belarus before its unifi cation with Western Belarus (Vsesoiuznaia perepis’ naseleniia 1939). A Polish census from 1931 reported that 283,300 Jews were living in Western Belarus, then part of Poland (Katljarchuk 2013, p. 13). Overall, around 658,400 Jews inhabited Soviet Belarusian territories by June 1941 when Nazi Germany attacked the Soviet Union. Later, this fi gure would increase by thousands, as up to 820,000 Jewish migrants from occupied Poland poured over the border (Katljarchuk 2013, p. 13). The vast majority of them were killed during 1941 – 1945 as a result of the Holocaust. No more than 10 – 12% of the Jewish population in Western Belarus and 50% in Central or Eastern Belarus survived World War II; overall, approximately 800,000 Jews were liquidated on the territory of occupied Belarus (Rudling 2013b, p. -
The Amazing, Rapidly Shrinking "Holocaust"
AAARGH REPRINTS [email protected] THE AMAZING, RAPIDLY SHRINKING "HOLOCAUST" by David McCalden (1988) Is the Holocaust Industry singing its swan-song? The spring of 1988 will see a flurry of international conferences, where participants will desperately be seeking ways to halt the onslaught of Holocaust Revisionism -- the school of thought which regards the "Holocaust" as a gross and vulgar exaggeration. In April 1988 -- coinciding with Hitler's birthday -- a conference at Hofstra University on Long Island, NY will discuss possible ways to introduce "race relations" laws into the United States. The focus of the meeting will be to figure out ways to circumvent (or overturn?) the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees free speech. Then in July 1988, focusing on the 50th anniversary of Kristallnacht, Oxford University in England will host a major conference dealing with the "impact of the Holocaust." The conference is sponsored by the wealthy British- Jewish publisher, Robert Maxwell. Hollywood is also getting in on the act. ABC-TV plans to delight us with the eagerly awaited sequel to Winds of War, entitled War & Remembrance. Although the sequel is already in the can, after the most expensive location-shooting in television history, its broadcast has been mysteriously postponed until next season -- perhaps to make a few corrections, in response to Revisionist criticism? Likewise, NBC-TV will be bringing us The Mel Mermelstein Story -- an all- Jewish production starring Leonard Nimoy in the title role, about -
