Spring, summer, winter, and fall mark the calendar and define the possibilities of labour and gender. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the pivotal events that unfolded during the Cariboo gold rush of 1862. In a world before climate-controlled homes, miners, Natives, Chinese, and Hurdy Gurdy girls all had to reckon with nature's rhythms. This thesis explores how seasons, compounded by the contradictory forces of geographical isolation, a global market for gold, and environmental experiences in previous North American rushes, played a key role in how miners and their accompaniments related to nature and to each other. To pursue the latent wealth of the Cariboo, gold miners had to accommodate the region's seasonal contingencies. The result was a peculiar rhythm of mining that revealed the intricate ways that nature shaped the most northern mining frontier before the Yukon. The 1925 images hang side by side in the Academic Quadrangle. "Finding Placer Gold by Pioneer Miners in the Cariboo A.D. 1858" and "Overland Pioneers journey through the Rockies A.D. 1862" are large but not artistically spectacular, and they tell a powerful metanarrative about Western pioneering, reinforcing myths of rough and ready Anglo-European masculinity, the ability to conquer nature, the allure of yellow treasure, and the civilizing influence of the white female. The paintings in short reflect British Columbia's "imagined West," a history that "began with the coming of the pioneers" and where nature yields to their will.' The Overlanders were a group of Canadian and British goldseekers who travelled overland from Ontario to the Cariboo. Most were pauperized at the end of their journey. Some perished. Few struck it rich. But to reinforce the myth of the white pioneer, Innes chose instead to portray these miners as pioneers. The Overlander painting reveals a tangled forest that blurs seamlessly into distant Rocky Mountains, and a pack train of people, horses, and oxen struggle through this picturesque wilderness. Conveying a sense of healthy, clean, and vigorous manhood,

  • The Klondike Gold Rush
    The Klondike Gold Rush 1 On August 16, 1896 Yukon-area Indians Skookum Jim Mason and Tagish Charlie, along with Seattleite George Carmack found gold in Rabbit Creek, near Dawson, in the Yukon region of Canada. Gold was literally found all over the place, and most of these early stakeholders (who became known as the "Klondike Kings") became wealthy. 2 Since the Yukon was so remote, word of this find spread relatively slowly for almost a year. On July 17, 1897, eleven months after the initial discovery of gold, the steamship Portland arrived in Seattle from Dawson with "more than a ton of gold", according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. With that pronouncement, the Klondike Gold Rush was on! 3 Within six months, approximately 100,000 gold-seekers set off for the Yukon. Only 30,000 completed the trip. Many Klondikers died, or lost enthusiasm and either stopped where they were, or turned back along the way. The trip was long, arduous, and cold. Klondikers had to walk most of the way, using either pack animals or sleds to carry hundreds of pounds of supplies. The Northwest Mounted Police in Canada required that all Klondikers bring a year's worth of supplies with them. Even so, starvation and malnutrition were serious problems along the trail. The story of the Klondiker who boiled his boots to drink the broth was widely reported, and may well have been true. Cold was another serious problem along the trail. Winter temperatures in the mountains of northern British Columbia and the Yukon were normally -20 degrees F., and temperatures of -50 degrees F.

    1 FBCA Newsletter Volume 15, Number 1 Terry Reksten Memorial Fund Recipients 2015 The recipients of the 2015 grants from the Terry Reksten Memorial Fund have been selected! This year the Salt Spring Island Historical Society (SSIHS) and the Western Front Media Archive were chosen to receive this annual award. Each organization will receive $1000 to assist with their projects. The SSIHS, in recognition of the 75th anniversary of the Salt Spring Elementary School, will use the grant to preserve and document the early history of the school district #64 (Gulf Islands). They will create an oral history by interviewing former and current students and teachers. As well, photographs associated with SSI elementary school, staff, students and community members will be digitized. The results of the project will be added to their archives and be presented on their website: saltspringarchives.com. The Western Front Media Archives represents a small arts community active in Vancouver for over 40 years. They will use the grant to improve the organization and storage conditions of the textual records dating from the 1970s and 1980s. They will re-house artist files, posters and ephemera, which include key records like contracts, correspondence and publicity materials. A staff member will create an inventory list of the contents of the boxes while they are being re-housed.     OTHERS AND OURSELVES: PORTRAITS OF ABORIGINAL PEOPLE BY EUROPEANS AND BY NATIVE AMERICANS Eliana Stratica Mihail and Zofia Krivdova This exhibition explores portraits of Aboriginal peoples in Canada, from the 18th to the 21st centuries. It is divided thematically into four sections: Early Portraits by European Settlers, Commercially-produced Postcards, Photographic Portraits of Aboriginal Artists, and Portraits of and by Aboriginal people. The first section deals with portraits of Aboriginal people from the 18th to the 19th century made by Europeans. They demonstrate an interest in the “other,” but also, with a few exceptions, a lack of knowledge—or disinterest in depicting their distinct physical features or real life experiences. The second section of the exhibition explores commercially produced portraits of First Nations peoples of British Columbia, which were sold as postcards. These postcards date from the 1920s, which represents a period of commercialization of Native culture, when European-Canadians were coming to British Columbia to visit Aboriginal villages and see totem poles. The third section presents photographic portraits of Aboriginal artists from the 20th century, showing their recognition and artistic realizations in Canada. This section is divided into two parts, according to the groups of Aboriginal peoples the artists belong to, Inuit and First Nations. The fourth section of the exhibition explores portraits of and by Aboriginals. The first section sharply contrasts with the last, showing the huge gap in mentality and vision between European settlers, who were just discovering this exotic and savage “other,” and Native artists, whose artistic expression is more spiritual and figurative. This exhibition also explores chronologically the change in the status of Aboriginal peoples, from the “primitive other” to 1 well-defined individuals, recognized for their achievements and contributions to Canadian society.

    Barkerville’s Thomas Robson Pattullo in Life and Death: The Memorial Album as Aide-Mémoire Don Bourdon* hough others on Barkerville’s main street are closer to the camera, one man stands out. He is wearing a distinctive black hat, frock coat, and travelling cloak. He leans against Tthe Bank of British Columbia building with an air of importance and looks straight at Frederick Dally, the photographer. Thomas Robson Pattullo stands out in this and other Cariboo photographs from 1867 to 1869. He appears wearing similar dress, trademark sidewhiskers, and a stern expression (Figure 1).1 He was also photographed in rough work clothes, the burly miner-cum-mine owner, not afraid to get dirty, but a figure of consequence. For over seventeen years, Pattullo was a larger-than-life figure in the Cariboo. He died suddenly in 1879 at the age of forty-one, and his memorial album of Dally photographs, long forgotten, serves as a springboard for discovering more about him and the community he called home. Thomas Robson Pattullo was one of Barkerville’s most identifiable public figures during the 1860s through the 1870s, frequently mentioned in the press, in public records, and private accounts. Pattullo toiled in the Cariboo, made fortunes and lost them, and lies buried on the hillside overlooking Barkerville.     Glenn Mitchell THE TRUE FAREWELL OF THE TRAMP Good afternoon. I’d like to begin with an ending ... which we might call `the Tramp’s First Farewell’. CLIP: FINAL SCENE OF `THE TRAMP’ That, of course, was the finale to Chaplin’s 1915 short film THE TRAMP. Among Chaplin scholars – and I think there may be one or two here today! - one of the topics that often divides opinion is that concerning the first and last appearances of Chaplin’s Tramp character. It seems fair to suggest that Chaplin’s assembly of the costume for MABEL’S STRANGE PREDICAMENT marks his first appearance, even though he has money to dispose of and is therefore technically not a tramp. KID AUTO RACES AT VENICE, shot during its production, narrowly beat the film into release. Altogether more difficult is to pinpoint where Chaplin’s Tramp character appears for the last time. For many years, the general view was that the Tramp made his farewell at the end of MODERN TIMES. As everyone here will know, it was a revision of that famous conclusion to THE TRAMP, which we saw just now ... only this time he walks into the distance not alone, but with a female companion, one who’s as resourceful, and almost as resilient, as he is. CLIP: END OF `MODERN TIMES’ When I was a young collector starting out, one of the key studies of Chaplin’s work was The Films of Charlie Chaplin, published in 1965. Its authors, Gerald D. McDonald, Michael Conway and Mark Ricci said this of the end of MODERN TIMES: - No one realized it at the time, but in that moment of hopefulness we were seeing Charlie the Little Tramp for the last time.
