Message from the Past President:

Dear fellow orchid growers,

So much has happened since the last newsletter that I hardly know where to begin! We have had our annual show and sale, and then there was the Nanaimo orchid show (officially known as the CVIOS show and sale). And on Monday there was culture class! An orchid filled month! So many people contributed to the success of our show that I hesitate to start with naming particular individu- als. I want to extend a big thank you to all members who gave generously of their time. A big welcome to all the new Society members, because our show is a place where orchid lovers discover there is a society that is there to help them. After many years in an executive position of the Society, I do indeed reflect on what the Society will do in the future. After 40 + years of existence, the Vancouver Orchid Society has proven resilient. But it is easy to get complacent. I strongly believe that if we support new growers and help succeed with their new found passion, they will be able to enjoy the hobby. So many people throw up their arms and say that orchids are impossible to grow in the home. It is true that some orchids are very hard to grow in a home environment, unless one is willing to create an enclosed area with a favourable climate. On the other hand, there are orchids that are less demanding of light, humidity and even attention! And modern hybrids have been created with the hobbyist in mind, as they are often easier to grow than the species. A new trend in hybridization is the miniaturization of favourite genera. There are the mini-Catts (Cattleyas that are small in size but the flowers are proportionally big), and they are also making mini Phragmipediums. And we all know there are mini Phalaenopsis (which are very popular). All this to say that we should collectively help steer budding enthusiasts to what is most likely to be rewarding for them. Of course, we all know that orchid lovers can be very determined and are willing to modify their homes just to get that beloved orchid to bloom - some of us have even turned down the thermostat to get that day/night tem- perature differential. The flourishment of the Society will also depend on the willingness of its members to promote it, and help it accomplish its goals. I have seen many a new member who has enthusiastically volunteered for a task, and this is heartening. In this vein, I will be doing repotting demonstrations at Bloedel Conservatory on Mother’s day, as they are pro- moting special events on that particular day, orchids being one of them. I hope to get the message out that a “Moth Orchid” can be rebloomed, and that there is so much more than Phalaenopsis in the Orchid family. And every time I am in Bloedel, in that wonderful moist and buoyant tropical environment, with the lovely birds fly- ing about, I imagine that some epiphytic orchids in the trees would add so much charm to this jewel of a gar- den. See you at the April 22 meeting, and remember to bring your H&R order! Sincerely, Margaret Prat Past President

What’s in bloom at the Muttart April 2015

Arpophyllum giganteum

The genus Arpophyllum is found from Mexico to Colombia and the Caribbean Islands and has four species that grow as epiphytes or terrestrials. The genus name is derived from the Greek “arpe” (sickle) and “phyllon” (leaf) and refers to the leaf shape

This specimen, commonly known as The Giant Arpophyllum as you would suspect is ranges from Mexico, Central America, Colombia to Venezuela and in Jamaica as a warm growing epiphyte in foothill forests, at elevations of 800 to 1500 meters

It is not known when this specimen was acquired by the OSPF, it is grown in intermediate house (min of 16 at night) on sunnier side but not exposed to direct sunlight.

Dendrobium [Den.] thyrsiflorum

The Common Name for this species is “The Cone-Like Raceme Dendrobium”

This species of Dendrobium is found in the Himalayas, China, Assam, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam at elevations of 1200 to 2000 meters in the humid, mossy mixed and coniferous forests. The flowers are fragrant and the plant should be watered sparingly through the winter months with reduced fertilizer until the initiation of new growth in the spring. Then full on watering and fertilizer till fall. Air circulation and bright light are essential for blooming.

This specimen was part of the original donation from Lorne Stuart, it is grown in hot house (min of 20 at night) on west (sunnier) side but not exposed to direct sunlight.

Volume 5, Issue 7 ORCHIFLORA Page 20

Dendrobium [Den.] mohlianum

This species was name after Hugo von Mohl, a 19th centu- ry German botanist

This medium to large sized, cool to cold growing species is from the Solomon Islands, Fiji, Samoa and Vanuatu in montane and cloud forests at altitudes from 450 to 3100 meters but are most common between 1500-2300 me- ters. The flowers appear on leafless canes with 4 to 6 flow- ers and are pollinated by birds.

The original of this specimen has been lost to the OSPF. The plant it is grown in hot house (min of 20 at night) on west (sunnier) side but not exposed to direct sunlight.

Kefersteinia sanguinolenta

This genus named after Wilhelm Moritz Keferstein, a 19th century German orchid collector. There are 73 species in this tropi- cal genus and are mostly epiphytic, although there are some that are occasionally found terrestrially, and grow in very wet montane forests.

This species is common known as “The Blood-Stained Kefersteinia” due to it having blood coloured spots of veins.

It is native to the Ecuadorian, Colombian, Peruvian, Bolivian and Ven- ezuelan dense subtropical montane forests and grows in deep shade low down on slender trees at altitudes of 800 to 2400 meters..

This specimen was purchased by the OSPF from Ecuagenera in 2013, and is grown in hot house (min of 20 at night) on east (shade) side. This photograph is similar in color to the

Volume 5, Issue 7 ORCHIFLORA Page 21

Dryadella edwallii

A widely spread genus of 54 species from Guatemala to Brazil created out of the genus Masdevallia in 1978 by Carlyle Luer. They are all epiphytes that grow into large clumps and are found as epiphytes in moist cloud forests at elevations of 400 to 2500 meters.

This species is named after Edwall, Gustaf (1862 - 1946) who was either a Danish or Swedish botanist (depending on which source you consult) who collected orchids in Brazil between 1885 and 1905. This miniature orchid grows on trees in the cool, moist mountains of the States of São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Minas Gerais in Brazil at elevations around 1300 meters

This plant was donated by Keith Day in 2004 and it is grown in the intermediate house (min of 16 at night) on east (shade) side.

Cattleya bicolour var brasilliensis

The plants were originally found at about 200 ft. (60 m) near Bananal, between the cities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.

They usually grow near rivers in dense forests and are most often found on nearly vertical branches of tall trees 50-75 ft. (15-23 m) above the ground. Although they occasionally grow on rocks, they are never found on limestone or volcanic rock.

This species, while now very rare in nature, is still found at 2300-3300 ft. (700-1000 m) along tributaries of the Paraiba River from Mogi das Cruzes near São Paulo in eastern São Paulo through the state of Rio de Janeiro to the southwest border of Espirito Santo

Commonly known as the Bi-colored Cattleya, this specimen is This specimen is grown in hot house (min of 20 at night) known as Cattleya bicolor ssp brasiliensis on west (sunnier) side but not exposed to direct sun- light. The plant is found in Brazil in three distinct areas, the coastal mountains between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, the area be- tween Belo Horizonte and Formiga with another population found further north in the region of Brasilia. They species is now treated as 3 distinct morphologic groups, which are currently recognized as subspecies bicolor, subspecies minasgeraisensis, and subspecies brasiliensis
