III PREFACE After the tremendous successes of the First Scientific Conference on Andean Orchids in Gualaceo and the Second Conference at Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja, the organizers of the series received a bid from the Orchid Society of Quito, Botanical Garden of Quito, and Municipality of Quito to host the Third Conference and Show in February 2009 at the Itchimbia Cultural Center. Soon thereafter we received promises of additional sponsorship from the Ecuadorian Ministries of the Environment and Ministry of Tourism, the Botanical Founda- tion of the Andes, and the Catholic University of Quito. All these generous sponsors made it possible for us to invite 32 speakers from Ecuador, Brazil, Costa Rica, Mexico, the United States and Puerto Rico, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, and Czech Republic. Lectures and poster sessions in orchid systematics, ecology, and con- servation science spanned three days, February 5-7, 2009. It is appropriate that we held the Conference in Ecuador in 2009, the bicentenary of the birth of Charles Darwin (February 9, 2009) and the 150th anniversary of publication of his On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of the Races in the Struggle for Life (November 22, 1859). For it was largely because of his collections and observations of finches and mockingbirds in the Galapagos Islands that he became aware of morphological differences among them, differences that translated into recognition of differ- ent species on each of the islands in the archipelago and would later be adduced to support his theory of natural selection. The polymathic contributions of Charles Darwin are celebrated in this volume, some explicitly as in the papers by Ken Cameron (orchid pollination) and Stephen Kirby (geology and its relationship to orchid diversity in the Neotropics) but many others implicitly, whether they are papers devoted to systematics or ecology. The variation in nature that serves as the raw materials for descent with modification is under assault around the world by rampant deforestation — especially in Ecuador and Brazil. Alex Hirtz addresses the problem in Ec- uador, while Thomas Mirenda and Philip Seaton discuss in situ and ex situ solutions, whether already in progress or proposed. As always, education is the underlying key to all the solutions, and it is in that context we hope this volume (and others in the series) will be consulted by present-day students and serve a purpose in the years ahead. The present study aimed to inventory and elaborate descriptions and illustrations for the species of Orchidaceae found in a forest located in the southern Espírito Santo State, a region of few botanical studies, featuring a poorly known flora. During the study, 25 species were found and distributed into 21 genera. The majority of the species were epiphytic, represented by 16 species, followed by rupiculous, terrestrial, and mycoheterotrofic species. Most species flourished during the hot and humid period. Furthermore, the study revealed the presence of an endemic species and three new records for the State. Keywords: Atlantic Forest, conservation, orchids, taxonomy RESUMO - (Orchidaceae em um fragmento de Floresta Semidecídua de encosta na região sul do Estado do Espírito Santo, Sudeste do Brasil). O presente trabalho teve como objetivo inventariar e elaborar descrições e ilustrações para as espécies de Orchidaceae encontradas em um fragmento de Floresta Semidecídua localizado no sul do Estado do Espírito Santo, região de poucos estudos, caracterizando uma flora ainda pouco conhecida. Durante o estudo, 25 espécies distribuídas em 21 gêneros, foram registradas. A forma de vida predominante foi a epifítica, caracterizada por 16 espécies, seguida pela rupícola, terrícola e micoheterotrófica. A maior parte das espécies floresceu no período quente e úmido.

    Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. We developed a project addressing the determination of the reproductive system through experimental pollinations of species in the major genera representing all major lineages of Pleurothallidinae in order to determine occurrence of self-incompatibility in the subtribe, in which group it has possibly appeared for the first time, and how many times it has evolved. Additionally we surveyed the floral biology of species ofOctomeria , a genus with morphological characters typical of bee-pollinated flowers that was previously regarded as mellitophilous. At the moment, all but one of the species studied in selected large genera of the major lineages (Acianthera, Anathallis, Masdevallia, Octomeria, Specklinia, and Stelis) are self-incompatible. The species studied may possess complete, strong or partial self-incompatibility. We found two different sites where self-incompatibility reactions occur, the stigma and the stylar channel, and both sites were not found in the same genus except for Anathallis. Zusammenfassung Die antillanische Flora ist eine der artenreichsten der Erde. Trotz jahrhundertelanger floristischer Forschung zeigen jüngere Studien, daß der Archipel noch immer weiße Flecken beherbergt. Das trifft besonders auf die Familie der Orchideen zu, deren letzte Bearbeitung für Cuba z.B. mehr als ein halbes Jahrhundert zurückliegt. Die vorliegende Arbeit basiert auf der lang ausstehenden Revision der Orchideengattung Pleurothallis R. Br. für die Flora de Cuba. Mittels weiterer morphologischer, palynologischer, molekulargenetischer, phytogeographischer und ökologischer Untersuchungen auch eines Florenteils der anderen Großen Antillen wird die Genese der antillanischen Pleurothallis-Flora rekonstruiert. Der Archipel umfaßt mehr als 70 Arten dieser Gattung, wobei die Zahlen auf den einzelnen Inseln sehr verschieden sind: Cuba besitzt 39, Jamaica 23, Hispaniola 40 und Puerto Rico 11 Spezies. Das Zentrum der Diversität liegt im montanen Dreieck Ost-Cuba – Jamaica – Hispaniola, einer Region, die 95 % der antillanischen Arten beherbergt, wovon 75% endemisch auf einer der Inseln sind.

Abstract Most of the species studied in this paper have previously been placed in either Pleurothallis or Lepanthes. However, at one time or another, members of the group have also been placed in the genera Andinia, Brachycladium, Lueranthos, Masdeval- liantha, Neooreophilus, Oreophilus, Penducella, Salpistele and Xenosia. Phylogenetic analyses of nuclear ITS and plastid matK sequences indicate that these species form a strongly supported clade that is only distantly related to Lepanthes and is distinct from Pleurothallis and Salpistele. Since this clade includes the type species of Andinia, A. dielsii, and it has taxo- nomic precedence over all other generic names belonging to this group, Andinia is re-circumscribed and expanded to include 72 species segregated into five subgenera: Aenigma, Andinia, Brachycladium, Masdevalliantha and Minuscula.

It enjoys almost all types of vegetations. Among its floral wealth, the diversity of orchids plays an important role. They are known for their beautiful flowers having ecological values. An extensive survey in the field done from 2009 to 2020 in different areas of the state, supported by information found in the literature and by the material kept in the collections of local herbariums, allows us to propose, in this article, a list of 160 species belonging to 50 different genera. Furthermore, endemism, conservation aspects, medicinal and economic values of some of them are discussed. Résumé L'État d'Odisha abrite une grande richesse florale et faunistique avec des paysages variés. Il bénéficie de presque tous les types de végétations. Parmi ses richesses florales, la diversité des orchidées joue un rôle important. Ces dernières sont connues pour leurs belles fleurs ayant une valeurs écologiques.
