Running title: Life cycle of Plecoptera from an Apenninic stream 1 Abstract The life cycles of Isoperla grammatica, Amphinemura sulcicollis and Nemoura hesperiae are studied in a Northern Italy stream, sited in the Apennines. The three species show a univoltine life cycle and their development coincides approximately in the same period of the year, although the one of I. grammatica is longer. Possible egg dormancy could exist in the A. sulcicollis and N. hesperiae life cycles, but this needs to be proved. The three taxa show a spring flight period in the study area. Growth is almost constant through the life cycle, except in A. sulcicollis in which an increase is observed at the end of the development. N. hesperiae exhibits a faster growth than the other species. In addition, in this paper, the nymph of N. hesperiae is described and designed for the first time. EDITORIAL ASSISTANT: Bonnie Snow The Ninth International Symposium on Plecoptera The Ninth International Symposium on Plecoptera is to be held at Marysville, near Melbourne Victoria, Australia in February 1987. The conference will be held in conjunction with the Fifth International Conference on Ephemeroptera. Dates have been scheduled to follow the 23rd Congress of the Societas Internationalis Limnologiae at Hamilton, New Zealand, February 8-14. The format of the conference will provide for separate meetings for the plecopterists and ephemeropterists together with joint sessions and social activities. The provisional program is: February 18-20 Ephemeroptera Conference, Feb. 21 Symposium: Life History Strategies in the Ephemeroptera and Plecoptera, Feb. 22 Field Day, and Feb. 23-24 as the IXth International Plecoptera Conference. Papers on any aspect of Plecoptera will be welcome, particularly those on Southern Hemisphere species. An extended field tour of Southeastern Australian streams will be available from February 23-28. The Campine Plateau 12 Koen Beerten, Roland Dreesen, Jos Janssen and Dany Van Uytven Abstract Once occupied by shallow and wide braided channels of the Meuse and Rhine rivers around the Early to Middle Pleistocene transition, transporting and depositing debris from southern origin, the Campine Plateau became a positive relief as the combined result of uplift, the protective role of the sedimentary cover, and presumably also base level fluctuations. The escarpments bordering the Campine Plateau are tectonic or erosional in origin, showing characteristics of both a fault footwall in a graben system, a fluvial terrace, and a pediment. The intensive post-depositional evolution is attested by numerous traces of chemical and physical weathering during (warm) interglacials and glacials respectively. The unique interplay between tectonics, climate, and geomorphological processes led to the preservation of economically valuable natural resources, such as gravel, construction sand, and glass sand. Conversely, their extraction opened new windows onto the geological and geomorphological evolution of the Campine Plateau adding to the geoheritage potential of the first Belgian national park, the National Park Hoge Kempen. In this chapter, the origin and evolution of this particular landscape is explained and illustrated by several remarkable geomorphological highlights.
