In order to investigate the relatedness of stonefly to other members of Neoptera, a phylogenetic analysis was undertaken based on 13 protein-coding genes of mitochondrial genomes in 13 representative insects. The mitochondrial genome of the stonefly is a circular molecule consisting of 16,179 nucleotides and contains the 37 genes typically found in other insects. A 10-bp poly-T stretch was observed in the A+T-rich region of the K. wangi mitochondrial genome. Downstream of the poly-T stretch, two regions were located with potential ability to form stem-loop structures; these were designated stem-loop 1 (positions 15848– 15651) and stem-loop 2 (15965–15998). The arrangement of genes and nucleotide composition of the K. wangi mitogenome are similar to those in Pteronarcys princeps, suggesting a conserved genome evolution within the Plecoptera. Phylogenetic analysis using maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference of 13 protein-coding genes supported a novel relationship between the Plecoptera and Ephemeroptera. The results contradict the existence of a monophyletic Plectoptera and Plecoptera as sister taxa to Embiidina, and thus requires further analyses with additional mitogenome sampling at the base of the Neoptera. -
The Mitochondrial Genomes of Palaeopteran Insects and Insights
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN The mitochondrial genomes of palaeopteran insects and insights into the early insect relationships Nan Song1*, Xinxin Li1, Xinming Yin1, Xinghao Li1, Jian Yin2 & Pengliang Pan2 Phylogenetic relationships of basal insects remain a matter of discussion. In particular, the relationships among Ephemeroptera, Odonata and Neoptera are the focus of debate. In this study, we used a next-generation sequencing approach to reconstruct new mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) from 18 species of basal insects, including six representatives of Ephemeroptera and 11 of Odonata, plus one species belonging to Zygentoma. We then compared the structures of the newly sequenced mitogenomes. A tRNA gene cluster of IMQM was found in three ephemeropteran species, which may serve as a potential synapomorphy for the family Heptageniidae. Combined with published insect mitogenome sequences, we constructed a data matrix with all 37 mitochondrial genes of 85 taxa, which had a sampling concentrating on the palaeopteran lineages. Phylogenetic analyses were performed based on various data coding schemes, using maximum likelihood and Bayesian inferences under diferent models of sequence evolution. Our results generally recovered Zygentoma as a monophyletic group, which formed a sister group to Pterygota. This confrmed the relatively primitive position of Zygentoma to Ephemeroptera, Odonata and Neoptera. Analyses using site-heterogeneous CAT-GTR model strongly supported the Palaeoptera clade, with the monophyletic Ephemeroptera being sister to the monophyletic Odonata. In addition, a sister group relationship between Palaeoptera and Neoptera was supported by the current mitogenomic data. Te acquisition of wings and of ability of fight contribute to the success of insects in the planet. -

LA MORTE DI AGRICANE Agricane è innamorato di Angelica ma la principessa ha rifiutato le nozze. Allorché l’imperatore di Tartaria assedia e incendia la città di Albracca. La principessa, su suggerimento di un suo consigliere, fugge dalla città in fiamme in cerca di aiuto. Alle prime luci dell’alba, in preda allo sconforto, osserva ciò che resta di Albracca. Sopraggiunge un suo suddito che la informa che il castello non è bruciato ed è difeso da Sacripante, Torindo e Truffaldino, ed ella si rincuora. I Tartari trovano la principessa che però riesce ancora una volta a fuggire. Nei pressi di una foresta incontra un povero vecchio in cerca di aiuto per il figlio malato; impietosita decide di aiutarlo ma ella viene imprigionata in un maniero dove incontra altre donne, tra cui Fiordiligi, moglie di Brandimarte, prigioniero come Orlando della maga Drogantina. Angelica incita le donne a ribellarsi e grazie al suo anello magico riesce a scappare per liberare Orlando, Brandimarte e gli altri cavalieri prigionieri della maga, promettendo alle altre donne di tornare a salvarle quanto prima. La principessa giunge al giardino di Drogantina e grazie al suo anello distrugge l’incanto liberando tutti i cavalieri che giurano di sconfiggere Agricane e il suo esercito. Nel frattempo l’imperatore di Tartaria riceve la visita di Truffaldino che ha tradito Sacripante portandolo in prigione per consegnare le chiavi della città di Albracca. Agricane sdegnato dalla viltà del traditore lo condanna a morte ma Truffaldino riesce a fuggire. Angelica e i suoi nuovi difensori giungono nel Catai e Orlando conduce sana e salva la principessa alla rocca di Albracca. -

Among sp., Planorbis austroalpinus Harzhauser and Neubauer the gastropods, only Theodoxus crenulatus (Klein, 1853) is nov. sp., Gyraulus sachsenhoferi Harzhauser and Neubauer known from other Miocene localities, whilst all other spe- nov. sp., Bulinus corici Harzhauser and Neubauer nov. sp., cies are documented so far only from Lake Groisenbach. As one component of cold temperature adaptation, ice worms maintain atypically high energy levels in an apparent mechanism to offset cold temperature-induced lethargy and death. To explore this observation at a mechanistic level, we considered the putative contribution of 5 adenosine monophosphate deaminase (AMPD), a key regulator of energy metabolism in eukaryotes. We cloned cDNAs encoding ice worm AMPD, generating a fragment encoding 543 amino acids that included a short N-terminal region and complete C-terminal catalytic domain. The predicted ice worm AMPD amino acid sequence displayed conservation with homologues from other mesophilic eukaryotes with notable exceptions. In particular, an ice worm-specific K188E substitution proximal to the AMP binding site likely alters the architecture of the active site and negatively affects the enzyme’s activity. Paradoxically, this would contribute to elevated intracellular ATP levels, which appears to be a signature of cold adapted taxa. -

HISTORIA Y PRESENTE DE LAS COLECCIONES DE INVERTEBRADOS DEL MUSEO NACIONAL DE CIENCIAS NATURALES (CSIC) Miguel Villena Sánchez-Valero Conservador de las colecciones de Invertebrados 1 .- RESEÑA HISTÓRICA Para encontrar el origen de la Colección de Invertebrados de Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales de Madrid tenemos que remontarnos al último tercio del siglo XVIII, cuando, tras numerosas gestiones y diversos intentos, una Real Orden de Carlos III, promulgada el 17 de octubre de 1771, crea el Real Gabinete de Historia Natural y pone punto final a las enormes carencias que, en ese sentido, tenía España respecto a otros países europeos. En estos momentos iniciales, y hasta que se inaugure de forma definitiva el 4 de noviembre de 1776, las colecciones custodiadas en este establecimiento tendrán como base el excelente Gabinete de Historia Natural formado en París por el sabio ilustrado Pedro Franco Dávila, quien, gracias a sus desvelos en la formación del Gabinete y, sobre todo, gracias a los conocimientos en Historia Natural, adquiridos en una estancia de casi 26 años en París, en contacto con los científicos más reputados del momento, será nombrado Primer Director del establecimiento. Con este nombramiento Don Pedro recibió un triple encargo: que se coloquen en Madrid en debida forma las preciosidades actuales del Gabinete, y las demás con que el Rey providenciará enriquecerle, que se verifique la instrucción pública y, sobre todo, el encargo especial de que le tenga a su cuidado y procure difundir el gusto y nociones de tan importante materia.1 A partir de ese momento el interés principal del Gabinete recién creado y de sus dirigentes será el incremento de las colecciones con ese, cuando menos, triple objetivo que tiene que tener todo Museo2 que se precie de tal, es decir: • Conservar, catalogar, restaurar y exhibir de forma ordenada sus colecciones. -

In the present study we evaluated the contact and distant effects of P. canaliculata in its native range on exotic (Melanoides tuberculata and Physa acuta) and native snails (Heleobia parchappii, Biomphalaria peregrina,andChilina parchappii). Habitat use was affected in P. acuta, H. parchappii, and B. peregrina by contact effects of P. canaliculata, whereas survival was only affected in P. acuta through combined contact and distant effects. Fecundity was reduced in P. acuta and B. peregrina by combined contact and distant effects; evidence of egg mass predation was also observed in both spe- cies. Melanoides tuberculata was not affected at all by P. canaliculata. The snail species with higher withdrawal responses to contacts with P. canaliculata were those that suffered less mortality by cor- poral contact, whereas snails with high crawling away responses suffered from higher mortality. -

Laboratory Feeding of Bulinus Truncatus and Bulinus Globosus with Tridax Procumbens Leaves

Accepted 18 March, 2013 Suitability of Tridax procumbens leaves in laboratory feeding of Bulinus truncatus and Bulinus globosus was assessed in comparison with Lactuca sativa between September and October, 2011. The snails were collected from Eri-lope stream in Ago-Iwoye, while T. procumbens were collected from the Mini Campus of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ijebu North, Southwestern Nigeria. For B. truncatus, fresh, sun-dried and oven-dried T. procumbens were used, while only fresh T. procumbens were used for B. globosus. The mean percentage survivals of B. truncatus fed with fresh, sun-dried and oven-dried T. procumbens compared with those of the corresponding control snails showed no significant difference (2 = 0.51, 1.85, and 2.21, respectively). B. truncatus fed with fresh T. procumbens had the highest mean live-weight percentage increase (46.4%) as compared to those fed with sun-dried and oven-dried (2 = 45.65). The mean percentage survival of B. globosus fed with fresh T. procumbens (79.2%) was similar with that of the control (84.6%) (2 = 0.18).
