  • “Buster” Unplugged
“BUSTER” UNPLUGGED. June 2001 Craig “Buster” Mottram is one of the most promising athletes seen in Australia for years. On the eve of his departure for Europe I was fortunate to catch up with Craig for a bit of a chat and a low fat blueberry muffin. N.M. Craig, you leave for Europe tomorrow. How long are you away and what races are scheduled in the lead-up to the World Athletic Championships in August? C.M. I will be away for about three months. First, I fly straight to London and spend a few days there before my first meet, a 3000 metre race in Helsinki on June 14. There‟s also a proposed meet in Lille on the 17th of June but I‟m not sure if I‟m in that yet - that will be a 2000 metre race. Then we move to Rome on the 29 of June for the big Golden League Meeting where I‟ll run the 5000 metres. That will be a new experience for me and I‟m sure it will be a very fast race and a good opportunity for me to run a good time. After that will depend on how I am running and what races are available. N.M. Is it quick times or scalps your aiming for? C.M. Quick times. If you run quick times, you‟ll get the scalps. N.M. What sort of quick times are realistic? C.M. It would be nice to run under 13:15. I‟m not going to say how far under - if I mention 13:10 Troopy might be annoyed! N.M.

  • Craig Mottram
CRAIG MOTTRAM. HE‟S BACK, HE‟S FLYING AND HE‟S ATHENS BOUND. January 2004 Craig „Buster‟ Mottram is the most talented male middle-distance runner seen in Australia for decades. However, Craig would rather forget the first half of 2003, when an injured knee failed to respond to intensive treatment and time was running out for the Geelong star to put in the training and racing necessary in the lead-up to the Athens Olympics. But fortunately, „Buster‟ is back, better than ever and ready to show the African distance athletes, dominant for so long, that „tall white men can run!‟ N.M. Craig, this time last year you were hoping for a big 2003, to build upon your successes of 2002. However, 2003 turned out to be a bit of a roller-coaster ride of highs and lows. C.M. That‟s very true. The first half of the year was all down-hill but we were able to bounce back by heading overseas in June and making the most of limited opportunities to run an Olympic A Qualifier. Actually, we had initially decided that the Olympic A Qualifier was going to be my main goal for 2003 so that worked out well. So despite last year having a few negatives, there was also the positive that I was able to focus on a smaller target, achieve that, then move onto Athens. N.M. You hurt your iliotibial band. How did this happen? C.M. I think it‟s pretty common knowledge that I was playing a game of basketball with some friends, just after I got back from Europe in 2002.

  • Sarah Jamieson
SARAH JAMIESON DUAL OLYMPIAN April 2005 Australian middle – distance runner and dual Olympian, Sarah Jamieson certainly knows the value of perseverance, determination and patience. After many operations on her troublesome legs and feet and much injury down-time, she is now in career best form and keen to take on the best in the world. I was fortunate to catch up with Sarah for a chat as she was putting in the „hard yards‟ back in Melbourne in preparation for the up-coming World Athletic Championships in Helsinki. N.M. Sarah, congratulations on your running accomplishments over the recent Australian domestic season, which have included a front-running win over 1500 metres at the Melbourne Grand Prix (4:06.80), winning the National 1500 metre title in Sydney (4:09.42), representing Australian at the recent World Cross-Country Championships and selection in the Australian Team for this year‟s World Athletic Championships to be held Helsinki. You‟re obviously in great form at the moment – what do you put this down to? S.J. I think it comes from a lot of consistency, just putting together week after week of good, solid training without any interruptions due to injury. I also feel that I‟ve got a well-rounded program that includes a lot of endurance work, a bit of altitude training up at Falls Creek, some good track training and some work in the gym to compliment all the running. N.M. In regards to your training, after a few major injuries, you now do much of your running on soft surfaces to lessen impact stress.

  • The Sub-4 Alphabetic Register (1,568 Athletes As at 23 April 2019)
The Sub-4 Alphabetic Register (1,568 athletes as at 23 April 2019) Within a year of the death of the first sub-four-minute miler, Sir Roger Bannister, at the ago of 88, the total number of athletes who have broken through the once historic barrier is past 1,550. No country has kept greater faith with the legend of the sub-four-minute mile than the USA. During the 2019 indoor season in that country there were 73 sub-four-minute performances, and the total of US sub-four-minute milers is now over 550. Elsewhere, even the distant past eventually yields its secrets: a hitherto overlooked performance from as long ago as 1974 by a Bulgarian was not discovered until 36 years later! Bulgaria remains something of a mystery because another sub-four minute mile by a Bulgarian in 1992 (no venue or exact date) has only recently been caught up with! There are now 19 sets of brothers, including five sets of twins, and 11 sets of fathers and sons who have broken four minutes. The most recent contributors to this family tradition are Jakob Ingebrigtsen, brother of Filip and Henrik Ingebrigtsen; John Coghlan, son of Eamonn Coghlan; Johnny Gregorek, son of John Gregorek; Liam Dee, son of Billy Dee: and Jamie Williamson, son of Graham Williamson. The Gregoreks have now replaced Kip and Martin Keino as the most successful father/son miling partnership, based on the average of their best times. The Ingbrigtsens have become the first set of three brothers to break four minutes.

  • Sub-4 Register 2021
The Sub-4 Alphabetic Register (1663 athletes as of April 13, 2021) WITHIN A YEAR of the death of the first sub-4:00 miler, Sir Roger Bannister, at the age of 88, the total number of athletes who have broken through the once historic barrier was already past 1550, and no country has kept greater faith with the legend of the sub-4 mile than the USA. Even during the COVID-ravaged year of ’21 there were 51 men who broke 4:00 indoors, of which 32 were Americans. Outdoors in ’20 there were 33 who enterprisingly did so in Australia, Great Britain, Italy, Lithuania, Norway, Switzerland and, of course, the USA. The total of US sub-4 milers is now 594, far ahead of Great Britain’s 215 and Kenya’s 152, with no other country yet nearing 100. The year ’21 has very soon passed another landmark, as Nick Willis, of New Zealand, has broken 4:00 for a record 19th successive year. The previous best of 18 was held by his countryman John Walker, but Steve Scott of the USA, is still the most prolific sub-4 miler in history, with 137 such times to his credit. Elsewhere, even the distant past has eventually yielded its secrets: a hitherto overlooked performance from as long ago as 1974 by a Bulgarian was not discovered until 36 years later! Bulgaria remains something of a mystery because another sub-four minute mile by a Bulgarian in ’92 (no venue or exact date) has only recently been caught up with!
