Chairman’s Letter to the Australian Athletics Family Contents The past 12 months have been among the most important and exciting in Australian athletics history, with the entire country caught up in the spirit of the Sydney Olympic Pages Games. Introducing Athletics Australia 4 On the track, outstanding performances by our athletes - and the exciting discovery of emerging young talent - has shown the world that Australia is once again a force Athletics Australia Board of Directors 5 to be reckoned with in track and field. Directory 6 The past year has also been one of significant achievements off the track for Athletics Australia. A substantial internal restructure was undertaken during 1999-00 aimed Chairman and CEO’s Report 8 at giving the organisation and our sport a stronger business base and marketing focus, with a high priority to grow the sport’s standing in Australia.     Profile EMBARGOED: 3:01AM MON, APRIL 30, 2018 Jana Pittman, 35 Three-time Olympian, author, mother-to-three & InsideOut Institute Ambassador who lived with bulimia nervosa for 10 years, SYDNEY Jana Pittman, 35, Sydney is best known for her illustrious 14-year-long track and field career specialising in the 400 metres and the 400 metre hurdles. The three-time Olympian who clinched gold at the World Championships and at the 2006 Commonwealth Games respectively, made history in 2014 when she competed in the nation’s Winter Olympic women’s bobsled team, and became the first Australian woman to have participated in both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games. Today, the indefatigable single mother-to-three, who recently published a biography entitled ‘Just Another Hurdle’, is working hard to fulfil yet another childhood dream – to become a doctor. Jana is also a newly appointed Ambassador to the InsideOut Institute – Australia’s first institute for research and clinical excellence in eating disorders based at the Charles Perkins Centre at the University of Sydney. Having developed the potentially devastating eating disorder, bulimia nervosa in 2004, Jana spent the next decade battling a dysfunctional relationship with food while at the pinnacle of her sporting career. Following the breakdown of her marriage and a sporting injury, Jana eventually turned to therapy for help. This is Jana’s story. For much of her life, Jana has been recognised for her dogged determination to succeed in her chosen sport. She has been extraordinarily successful, winning nine gold medals, including her first gold medal for Australia at the 1999 World Youth Championships.

    Oceania Moves Towards One Athletics Family Oceania Masters Athletics (OMA) was honoured to be invited by Oceania Athletics to hold the OMA Council and AGM in conjunction with Oceania Athletics Association’s (OAA) biennial Congress held at the Gold Coast on 6-8 February 2015. This first joint meeting provided many of our Pacific Island member federations the opportunity to attend the OMA AGM and learn more about masters athletics in the Oceania region. Similarly it gave OMA Council members the opportunity to interact with delegates from the Oceania member federations (including Australia and New Zealand) as well as a range of athletic and pacific games dignitaries. These included the IAAF Vice President, Lord Sebastian Coe, the IAAF Secretary General, Essar Gabriel, and a number of IAAF Council and IAAF Committee members as well as the 2014 IAAF Female Athlete of the Year, Valerie Adams. It became apparent during the Congress that the Oceania region although representing less than 1% of the world’s population was highly regarded because of the strength of its regional development. This particular Congress had a greater degree of importance, because later this year there will be an election of a new IAAF President – both Sebastian Coe and Sergey Bubka are standing for the IAAF Presidency. The Oceania region is important in these upcoming elections because each IAAF member federation has one vote - thus tiny nations such as Nauru and Palau have the same vote as China or the USA. Coles has funded over $500,000 in grants to participate and compete.
