The libretto for this four act opera, based on the play Don Álvaro o La fuerza del sino (1835) by Ángel de Saavedra, was written by Francesco Maria Piave. Apart from two concert performances at the Alte Oper in 2005, this is the first New Production in Frankfurt since 1974, now in the rarely performed unabridged Petersburg edition. Leonora, Marchese di Calatrava's daughter, loves the mestizo Don Alvaro, against her father's will. -

Ü 28 OCTOBER 2013 CASTING ANNOUNCEMENT LES VÊPRES SICILIENNES 29 October; 1, 4, 7, 11 November 2013 at 6pm The role of Hélène will now be sung by Armenian soprano Lianna Haroutounian for all remaining performances of Les Vêpres siciliennes. Unfortunately the illness that prevented Marina Poplavskaya from singing the role of Hélène in the premiere of our new production of Les Vêpres siciliennes has persisted longer than expected, and has made it impossible for her to sing the remaining performances. We look forward to welcoming her back to The Royal Opera for further engagements. Lianna Haroutounian also sang the role of Hélène at the premiere of this production on 17 October. She made her debut with The Royal Opera in May 2013 singing Elizabeth of Valois (Don Carlo). Her recent roles have included Desdemona (Otello) for the Opéra-Bastille in Paris, Leonora (Il trovatore) in Marseilles, Leonora (La forza del destino) for Paris Opéra, Amelia (Simon Boccanegra) in Lille, Mimì (La bohème) for the Grand Théâtre in Tours and Amelia (Un ballo in maschera) at the Stadttheater in Bern and the Grand Théâtre in Tours. Her other roles during the 2012–13 season included Elena (I vespri siciliani) at the Megaron Concert Hall, Athens, and in Bilbao and Frankfurt (in the original French version of the opera), and Cio-Cio-San (Madama Butterfly) for Festival de Sanxay. Upcoming engagements include Desdemona for the Teatro di San Carlo, Naples. September 2017 Philharmonia Records presents: Giuseppe Verdi – Ouvertures and Preludes Giuseppe Verdi composed over 30 operas, though only about half of them are still regularly staged. For the latest studio recording with the Philharmonia Zürich, Fabio Luisi has cho- sen overtures and preludes from Verdi’s whole creative period. Next to popular masterpieces like the overture to «La forza del destino», the selection ranges from the earliest works by Verdi, which strongly remind of Rossini and Donizetti, over exceptional preludes he wrote for «Macbeth» or «La traviata» for example, to rarely performed overtures such as «I vespri sicil- iani» or «La battaglia di Legnano». A special highlight on this recording is the long version of the overture to «Aida», which is never heard in combination with opera. Furthermore, the ballet music for the French version of «Don Carlos» also found its way onto the album. Thus, the compilation unites pieces that belong to the day-to-day repertoire of the Philharmonia Zurich with those that are also rarities to orchestra musicians. Available worldwide as of now. A Revolução Na Ópera Jorge Coli
A Revolução na Ópera Jorge Coli André (Andrea, em italiano) Chénier realmente existiu. É um poeta maior da língua francesa. Talvez seja mesmo possível dizer, pelo menos por duas razões, que ele é o primeiro grande poeta moderno. Primeiro, porque assinala a falência do grande poema, de tradição épica, para instaurar o lirismo do fragmento, do incompleto, que é tão sugestivo à imaginação, tão favorável ao íntimo e ao confessional. Depois, porque, pela primeira vez na história, a produção artística de um escritor maior vem mesclada, em suas fibras mais profundas, com a expressão de convicções políticas. Esse fenômeno novo mistura também os ideais, a criação e a vida: Chénier foi preso e guilhotinado durante o período do Terror, na Revolução Francesa. A ópera Andrea Chénier é baseada no destino desse personagem, de espírito livre, que se deixa tomar pelas esperanças revolucionárias, mas que logo percebe os perigos trazidos pelos excessos dos radicalismos políticos. Como é dito na ópera, nasceu em Constantinopla, foi soldado, mesmo se por um período breve de sua mais tenra juventude. Publicou pouco e foi de fato conhecido apenas depois de sua morte, aos 32 anos. A trama não se quer, porém, fiel aos acontecimentos. Ela borda livremente. Chénier conheceu de fato uma jovem nobre da família Coigny. Porém, não se chamava Maddalena, como na ópera, mas Aimée (o que seria Amata, em italiano): a substituição deve ter sido feita por razões de eufonia. Chénier a encontrou na prisão de Saint Lazare, para a qual o espírito livre e irrequieto da jovem a havia conduzido. Aimée de Coigny tinha então 18 anos, já era casada há dois, com o duque de Fleury. -
