His parents had emigrated from Germany but his father, an alcoholic, deserted his family when Charles was four. His mother supported the family as a cook. Charles attended the Chicago Musical College where he performed in amateur productions, then worked on a cattle ranch in North Dakota and attended the Armour Institute of Technology. His primary interest, however, was in singing and through Flo Ziegfeld (whose father had run the Chicago Musical College which Hart attended earlier) he appeared in professional stage productions beginning in 1904 in mainly small roles. His recording career, begun with small companies, blossomed with a Victor contract in 1917, and until 1930 he was a frequent contributor to the catalogues of Victor, Columbia, Edison and smaller companies. In 1923 he began operatic studies and made his debut with the Chicago Opera as the leading tenor in Humperdinck’s Die Königskinder (co-starring Claire Dux and Alexander Kipnis). Subsequent to this, Edison captured him singing two arias and oratorio selections, but otherwise popular tunes occupied his recording time. He left the U.S. in 1929 for Germany, where he apparently made recordings for Electrola (which I’ve never seen). Because of the political climate, he returned to the U.S. and resumed a career in musicals and operas and with smaller companies and then as an actor, but he never again recorded. He spent his final years in an Actors’ Retirement Home in Englewood, NJ. – Tim Gracyk. 1257. 10” Blk. EE Columbia 369-D [W140521-3/W140522-4]. She studied first with Jean Seaman and then Marcella Sembrich. She first appeared in the Boston area with British composer/pianist Cyril Scott and made her professional New York solo debut at an Aeolian Hall concert in 1922. Of her work that evening, the Musical Courier reported, “Miss Hayden’s voice is one of rare beauty and it is exceedingly well produced. Her legato is of a type almost extinct and the roundness and sonority of her high notes is something to make the heart glad.” She apparently never appeared in opera but had great success as a recital and oratorio soloist, as well as having appeared with many major U.S. orchestras and choral societies. A well received European concert tour took place in the early 1930s. She appears to have been active at least through the 1930s. She was married to violinist Louis Edlin in 1923, a noted concertmaster and violinist with the New York Trio (who recorded for Edison in 1928). Death dates have not been traced for either artist. The disc below is her only recording, other than a 1939 Musicraft recording of the Bach Coffee Cantata. 2091. 10” PW Blue Columbia 211-M [W142576-6/W52577-4].
