CHARLES HART [t]. Chicago, 1884-Englewood, NJ, 1965. His parents had emigrated from Germany but his father, an alcoholic, deserted his family when Charles was four. His mother supported the family as a cook. Charles attended the Chicago Musical College where he performed in amateur productions, then worked on a cattle ranch in North Dakota and attended the Armour Institute of Technology. His primary interest, however, was in singing and through Flo Ziegfeld (whose father had run the Chicago Musical College which Hart attended earlier) he appeared in professional stage productions beginning in 1904 in mainly small roles. His recording career, begun with small companies, blossomed with a Victor contract in 1917, and until 1930 he was a frequent contributor to the catalogues of Victor, Columbia, Edison and smaller companies. In 1923 he began operatic studies and made his debut with the Chicago as the leading in Humperdinck’s Die Königskinder (co-starring Claire Dux and Alexander Kipnis). Subsequent to this, Edison captured him singing two arias and oratorio selections, but otherwise popular tunes occupied his recording time. He left the U.S. in 1929 for Germany, where he apparently made recordings for Electrola (which I’ve never seen). Because of the political climate, he returned to the U.S. and resumed a career in musicals and and with smaller companies and then as an actor, but he never again recorded. He spent his final years in an Actors’ Retirement Home in Englewood, NJ. – Tim Gracyk. 1257. 10” Blk. EE Columbia 369-D [W140521-3/W140522-4]. ETHYL HAYDEN [s]. Washington, PA, 1897- ? . She studied first with Jean Seaman and then Sembrich. She first appeared in the Boston area with British composer/pianist Cyril Scott and made her professional New York solo debut at an Aeolian Hall concert in 1922. Of her work that evening, the Musical Courier reported, “Miss Hayden’s voice is one of rare beauty and it is exceedingly well produced. Her legato is of a type almost extinct and the roundness and sonority of her high notes is something to make the heart glad.” She apparently never appeared in opera but had great success as a recital and oratorio soloist, as well as having appeared with many major U.S. orchestras and choral societies. A well received European concert tour took place in the early 1930s. She appears to have been active at least through the 1930s. She was married to violinist Louis Edlin in 1923, a noted concertmaster and violinist with the New York Trio (who recorded for Edison in 1928). Death dates have not been traced for either artist. The disc below is her only recording, other than a 1939 Musicraft recording of the Bach Coffee Cantata. 2091. 10” PW Blue Columbia 211-M [W142576-6/W52577-4]. Born in England, Hollingshead and his family migrated to Winnipeg, Canada, in 1892. He developed a singing career as a tenor, moving to Toronto and appearing there and in the region as a leading church and oratorio artist. In 1912 he went to England for vocal studies with Maestro Carboni. Two years later he successfully auditioned for Edison and made several cylinders and discs in the 1914-15 period. During the late ‘teens and early ‘20s, Hollingshead was located in (where he was listed in the 1920 N.Y. census along with his wife ). There he was engaged as a concert and church singer and was heard at the Strand Theater, where he appeared with Malcolm McEachern. In the late 1920s he revisited the Edison label and was by then known for his radio appearances in both the U.S. and in Canada. A 1931 Montreal newspaper article referred to him as “one of the best radio artists of the day” and his name can be found in U.S. radio listings up to at least 1934. 1397. 10” Red SS acous. Belltone 1004 [P-155-1]. ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA: Star of My Life (Ardini). Piano acc. by the composer. Who was “Ardini”? He doesn’t seem to appear in musical journals of the period (either as a teacher or composer). On this record his piano work (the piano extremely removed from the horn) consists mostly of improvisational sounding flowing arpeggios. The odd vocal part begins on a high A and includes several demonstrations of Hollingshead’s ability to crescendo and decrescendo on various tones, including a high C. The lowest note in this compo- sition is a low C. The mysterious composer Ardini was apparently also a teacher of Hollingshead at the time, as the tenor is credited on the label as “Ardini’s Pupil”. Belltone’s address is given on the label as 596 Riverside Drive, NYC, and the copyright year is 1919. This is a totally new label to me. The record has minimal greying, but the surface is quite heavily rubbed and scuffed and has numerous very light, mostly superficial scratches. Gen. 5. $35.00. LOUISE HOMER [c]. A granddaughter of violinist Joseph Joachim, Irene was raised in a cultural environment. She began singing lessons with Germaine Chevalet in 1933. Her progress was such that she entered the competition to enroll at the Conservatoire, joining the class of Suzanne Cesbron-Viseur in October 1935, later studying with Georges Viseur (solfège) and Pierre Chéreau. During her Conservatoire years, Joachim supported herself by singing in choirs, and also sang at the Concerts du Societe du Conservatoire. Joachim made her Opéra-Comique debut in 1939. Debussy’s Mélisande, which she had coached with Mary Garden, was her most celebrated role, although she had great success in a varied lyric repertoire and on the concert stage. She appeared at the Paris Opera in 1945 and was heard throughout and Europe . Following her retirement in 1954, Joachim taught at the Schola Cantorium, the Paris Conservatoire and finally at the Conservatorie Américaine in Fontainebleau. 1485. 10” Green elec. The season of 1934- 35 she toured Belgium with an operetta company headed by tenor Eduard Lichtenstein. A very strange letter exists in the collection of Gregor Benko from an apparently American concert manager (William Neill? Last name difficult to decipher) addressed to Miss Jungbauer in Germany on June 28, 1939. He acknowledges having received Jungbauer’s letters “which are those of a gutter snipe and [an] uneducated sex-mad woman” as well as “filthy postcards” addressed to him, care of one Miss Zoe Lynex. He further states, “If I do not receive your money which you owe … I shall cancel all the contracts for next season” and “have you thrown into jail for prostitution”. Going on, he states, “Furthermore – you will have to guarantee to keep your filthy mouth shut about my mother, who is a finer woman than any of your whole Viennese women put together”. This was obviously one very unhappy manager! Jungbauer is known to have sung in recital in the U.S., one performance having been in Buffalo, NY, in March, 1939. Whatever caused the problem between Jungbauer and Mr. Neill likely brought Jungbauer’s U.S. career to a close. Nothing seems to be known of her subsequently. It has been suggested that she perished in a concentration camp. 2194. 10” Blk. acous. 62478 [3376ar/3377ar]. DIE FORELLE / HEIDENRÖSLEIN; RAST- LOSE LIEBE (all Schubert). Piano acc. Short catalogue life. Just about 1-2. $8.00. HIPOLITO LÁZARO [t]. Barcelona, 1887-1974. Lazaro’s first musical experience was as a saxophonist during military service. After some engagements singing in zarzuela he made his official operatic debut in Donizetti’s La Favorita in his native Barcelona, 1910. While mostly self-taught, he did spend a period later that year studying in Italy with Ernesto Colli, making his Italian debut as the Duke in Rigoletto. During the summer of 1911, he visited England primarily to record for the Gramophone Company. Lazaro described this adventure in his autobiography, the following quotes as translated from Spanish in the Record Collector magazine: “I go to the plant, make the records … and can hardly wait for my lovely voice to be reproduced … I listen to the records … the are terrible.” He felt that it was a conspiracy by the company, lest his records outsell those of “another tenor” (i.e. Caruso) as the Gramophone Company had spend “a great fortune in promoting [that other tenor’s] records”. Lázaro illogically reasoned, therefore, that “the company told the engineers to make bad records of me”, even though “… my voice is known as the most perfect there is, that has been and, according to the press, that will be for many years to come.” Ah, humility! It wasn’t until 1916 that he resumed recording, this time for Columbia, who referred to him as “the wonder tenor” and advised in their publicity that he was obviously better than that “other” tenor as he could sing higher. Despite his “contentious disposition” (as aptly put by John Steane in the Grove Opera Dictionary), Lazaro had a lengthy career that included most of the world’s major opera houses and that continued until the early 1950s. His years covered the period of 1918-1920, being replaced the next season with the arrivial of Beniamino Gigli. He spent part of 1921 touring here in recitals but then returned to Italy. There, he created the leading tenor roles in Mascagni’s Il Piccolo Marat (, 1921) and Giordano’s (, 1924). For the latter he sang the premiere but withdrew from further performances after disagreements with the composer. He wrote to his Spanish colleague Lucrezia Bori in 1939, then associated with the Metropolitan Opera Guild, advising that he would be available to sing at the Metropolitan again. Bori replied to him in English, perhaps recalling his disruptive disposition, saying that there were no openings. You’ll find a num- ber of Lazaro’s scarce electrical issues below. 1918. 10” Red PW Argentine elec. Odeon 292501 [WK1629/WK1636]. ELIZABETH LENNOX [c]. Born in Grand Rapids, MI, Lennox, daughter of a minister, studied voice in Chicago and around 1919 travelled to New York, winning a position as a church soloist on her second day there. She subsequently was involved with church work in addition to concert appearances. Her radio debut was in 1927 and she became a nationally recognized soloist from her work in this medium, as well as for records she made for Brunswick. Lennox stayed away from opera as she said (as a contralto) that she had no interest in playing “witches or hags”. She was in private life Mrs. George P. Hughes with one son, David. In 1976, then a resident of Bridgeport, CT, Lennox participated in a day at the Edison Site in New Jersey with other artists recalling their Edison recording years. 1632. 10” Blk. Needle-Cut elec. After beginning in business, Maclennen studied first locally and then in New York with Carl Dufft and Joseph Tamar, as well as in London with Sir George Henschel and Berlin with Franz Emerich. His debut was in 1902 as Gounod’s Faust with the Moody-Manners Opera Company at London’s Covent Garden. Two years later he toured American in the Henry Savage English language production of Parsifal and two years later with the same company, also in English, in the U.S. premiere of Madama Butterfly. He married soprano Florence Easton in 1904, who had co-starred with him in both touring productions. He then sang leading parts with the Berlin Royal Opera, including having been the first American to appear in the role of Tristan in Germany. He then was with the Hamburg Opera for two seasons and in 1915 made his Chicago Opera debut as Tristan, singing there for two seasons. Next he travelled with his wife in concert for a year and then was a member of the Scotti Grand Opera company. He later returned to Europe and in 1931 retired to Port Washington, NY and taught both there and in New York City. He and Easton had one child, a daughter named Wilhemina. Maclennan and Easton divorced in 1928, and he subsequently remarried Marie C. Morningstar (born in 1902). Not to be confused with bass-baritone Jean-Emile Vanni Marcoux, Henri Marcoux was a concert baritone active in Canada and New England from the ‘teens through the 1930s. He was in one source described as a protégé of the noted Italian voice teacher Isadore Braggiotti, who resided in Florence (Italy) and Maine. Whether Marcoux was French-Canadian or a New Englander is unclear, at least to me. A 1926 mention of a concert in which he participated in Lewiston, Maine, refers to him as “the Maine baritone”. Another, related to his teacher, mentions one “Harry Marcoux” among his pupils. A review of a recital at Jordan Hall, Boston, 1926, was highly complimentary, and a 1934 U.S. radio broadcast was also traced. Marcoux made two test discs for Victor in 1929, but otherwise his records were made for Victor in Canada (the disc below in U.S. issue format) shortly after his Camden tests. 2150. 10” Blk. Orth. Her Metropolitan Opera debut was in 1922 and she sang there 345 performances of leading coloratura and lyric roles until her retirement in December, 1938. She then succeeded Sembrich on the faculty of the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia and also taught at the Juilliard School in New York. In addition, she was a successful author of operatically themed murder mysteries. Her husband was conductor Wilfrid Pelletier. Upon his debut there as the Herald in Lohengrin, the NY Times opined: “A clear, fresh, but mature voice and manly presence gives promise of more varied opportunities for the artist.” Unfortunately, his career there included mostly secondary parts, and he left the Metropolitan in favor of more lucrative and leading roles in . In 1930 he starred in a musical film, Dixiana. It wasn’t a great success, and no additional screen appearances were made. She was considered a very modern woman personally, having regularly ridden a bicycle as a student, having divorced her first husband early on, and having been a frequent commenter on the modern Japanese woman. In a book on opera for Japanese audiences, she commented, “Seen from our Japanese eyes, the Japanese culture and customs that appear in [Madama Butterfly] are not merely extremely strange but rather infuriating. … The first act is almost thoroughly absurd to the Japanese, and one can see this as an unfiltered expression of the fantasies of the foreigners who have no understanding of Japan.” Her stage roles in the West were limited to Butterfly and such other Japanese flavored works as Iris (Mascagni), Madame Chrysanthème (Messager), The Geisha (Jones) and Namiko-san (Franchetti), which she premiered, although in concerts she incorporated lieder and songs of various nationalities. Active in New York in the ‘teens and 1920s, Nesi sang at the Rialto Theater under the direction of Hugo Riesenfeld, as well as the Rivoli and the Capitol Theaters under Nat Finston. The Capitol featured him in a performance of (likely excerpts from) Puccini’s Le Villi including a chorus of seventy and an orchestra of eighty. How movie theaters have changed! He was also a featured tenor with the touring U.S. La Scala Grand Opera Company, there sharing the stage with singers such as Edith Mason, Evelyn Scotney, Ernesto Caronna and Carl Formes. He also appeared in Milwaukee, where he was one of the featured artists between showings of Florence Vidor in Lying Lips. On the West Coast, Nesi was offered on a vaudeville bill as a singer “whose tenor voice has caused him to be styled ‘The Young Caruso.’ He has appeared before as a topnotcher in vaudeville and is laying plans for a grand opera career.” Actually, he was, judging from this record, a very fine tenor who made only three early electric Victor recordings. 1602. 10” Blk. While item #3089 (above) was thought to have been Mignon’s only recording, she made this test at the Salle Chopin in Paris on 15 Jan. 1931, confirmed by paper work as being this matrix. She had studied with her mother who, in turn, had been a pupil of Mathilde Marchesi. Mignon’s debut was in Feb., 1908 at the Teatro Costanzi as Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia with Fernando de Lucia as Count Almaviva, Giuseppe de Luca as Figaro and Adamo Didur as Dr. Bartolo. The audience was likewise starry, including Adelina Patti, who had insisted to Emma, her friend and colleague, that her daughter “must not make her public début without her being present”. Mignon was so successful that her contracted four performances were stretched to eight. Her first appearance at Covent Garden was as Ophelia in Ambroise Thomas’ Hamlet at the opening of ’s 1910 Winter Season. She was “much admired by Beecham, who described her Desdemona in Verdi’s Otello as ‘the best I have seen on any stage’.” At the Paris Opéra-Comique she had “considerable success” as Mimì and Lakmé. She sang in selected engagements until the death of her mother and then taught. Why this test recording was never issued or why others weren’t made can’t be explained by her stylistically appropriate and charming performance on this unique (i.e. only known copy) disc. Very decent copy, few (mostly) LGTs. 3-4. $300.00. MIGNON NEVADA

MARGUERITE NIELKA [s]. ? - 1939. This was the stage name of Margaret Kinnell, connected to British royalty as a niece of Lady Cowdray. At the beginning of World War I, Nielka organized the Lambeth Red Cross and set up the Nielka Hospital. She then toured as a concert singer. Her sole recording credits her as a “Soliste des Concerts Pasdeloups”. It was immediately after a concert in England featuring Nielka and directed by Piero Coppola that the Gramophone Company’s Fred Gaisberg offered Coppola the post of Musical Director of the French branch of its operations, which he quickly accepted. Evidently Nielka returned to her interest in medical work by contributing an article in 1936 to the British Journal of Medical Psychology entitled “Speech Difficulties in Childhood”.
