Supporten äger rum på kvällstid några gånger i veckan på Chalmers bibliotek, både på Johanneberg och Lindholmen, och bemannas huvudsakligen av amanuenser vid avdelning Matematik. Vår forskning har resulterat i fl er publicerade artiklar än tidigare, och tack vare fl era bidrag från både Vetenskapsrådet, Wallenbergstiftelserna och andra bidragsgivare har vi kunnat bjuda in många internationella fors- kare på alla nivåer, från postdok till professor, som på olika sätt bidragit till vår forskningsmiljö. Vi gläds åt utmärkelser som några av våra med- arbetare fått, som att Bo Berndtsson tilldelats Eva och Lars Gårdings pris i matematik, och att Robert Berman på nyåret blev invald i Kungliga veten- skapsakademien. Flera av institutionens lärare har också uppmärksammats för sina peda- gogiska insatser, vilket man kan läsa om senare i årsberättelsen. Utbild- ningen har gått bra för institutionen som helhet också, med ökat antal studenter på många kurser och program, vid både GU och Chalmers. Vår forskarutbildning har utökats med en ny forskarskola i Tillämpad matema- tik och matematisk statistik. All framgång beror förstås på institutionens medarbetare, de som har funnits här länge och de nya. Under året har vi haft glädjen att få hälsa många nya medarbetare välkomna, både lärare/forskare och administ- ratörer, och hoppas att alla skall trivas här. Och GoCAS, Gothenburg Centre for Advanced Studies in Science and Technology, har äntligen kommit igång, och invigdes vid en välbesökt ceremoni med tal och intressanta föredrag. Nu ser vi fram mot ett nytt år med nya utmaningar och förhoppningsvis många framgångar. Bernt Wennberg, prefekt 3 Matematik Under 2015 genomfördes en organisatorisk förändring vid avdelningen för matematik. Avdelningen delades in i sex enheter med vardera sin en- hetsledare, som tillsammans utgör avdelningens ledningsgrupp. Initiativet motiverades delvis av att ny modell för lönesättning och medarbetarsam- tal/utvecklingssamtal införs vid Chalmers/GU, där avdelningens storlek gör det problematiskt för en chef att ensam hantera detta. Enhetsledare har delegation att genomföra de två aktiviteterna. De fyra eftersträvade effektmålen med organiseringen är • Ökad kvalitet i lönesättning och medarbetarsamtal – genomförande och uppföljning. • Ökad synlighet och möjlighet till påverkan genom större närhet till en- hetsledare. • Ökat fokus framåt, mer proaktivt i stället för reaktivt. • Successionsplanering – fl er får möjlighet att testa ledarskap. Under året har 142 personer varit anställda vid avdelningen, utöver ti- manställda studenter. Omräknat till heltidsekvivalenter (HEK) motsvarar det 102 heltidsanställningar under helåret. Ledigheter har uppgått till mot- svarande cirka 3 HEK, 41 HEK har ägnats grundutbildning och 51 åt for- skning (varav 26 varit externt fi nansierade). Utöver detta har 6,6 HEK gått åt att bemanna totalt cirka 50 olika uppdrag, så väl internt vid avdelnin- gen eller institutionen, som externt hos de båda huvudmännen eller eljest. Två personer har helt eller delvis varit utstationerade på så kallade URA- kontrakt vid GU. Tre personer har befordrats till biträdande professor eller professor. Elva personer med anställning utanför MV har under året regelbun- det gjort en arbetsinsats inom vår grundutbildning. Fem tillsvidareanställ- da har avslutat sin anställning under 2015. De är professorerna Grigori Rozenblioum och Peter Sjögren, som båda fortsätter sina engagemang för oss som emeriti, docent Johan Karlsson, samt universitetslektorerna Thomas Ericsson och Lennart Falk. Via ett KAW-anslag fi ck vi glädjen att anställa professor Mattias Jons- son som gästprofessor vid Chalmers under ett år, med start 1 juli 2015. Vi startade fyra rekryteringar för tillsvidareanställningar, som hittills re- sulterat i två anställningar. Två rekryteringar av gästlärare resulterade i fyra anställningar, och fyra processer för doktorer/postdoktorer har gett oss nio anställningar av lika många nationaliteter. Tio doktorander, av fyra nationaliteter, har under året påbörjat anställningar hos oss. En nyhet var att vi gjorde en regelrätt utlysning av amanuenser och då rekryterades fem 4 personer. Under året har det gjorts cirka 175 tjänsteresor och vi har haft 65 gäster, varav tio inom ramen för avdelningens gästprogram. För tredje året i rad har vi förbättrat våra resultat i kursutvärderingar på Chalmers, delvis beroende på de duktiga gästlärare vi rekryterat. Vi fi ck medel till sex så kallade kvalitetsprojekt inom grundutbildningen vid Chalmers, samtidigt som det pågått tre projekt vid GU med extra fi - nansiering. Anders Logg och Frida Svelander fi ck maskinteknologernas pedagogiska pris Gyllene pekpinnen för årets föreläsare och övningsle- dare, och Ulla Dinger erhöll Naturvetenskapliga fakultetens utmärkelse för förtjänstfulla insatser inom utbildningen. Fem doktorander avslutade sina utbildningar med examen under året, och sju tog steget till licentiat. Vi har haft 38 pågående externt fi nansierade forskningsprojekt. Mest slående inom denna del av vår verksamhet är annars att vi publicerat mer än någonsin tidigare. Antalet refereegranskade artiklar steg enligt statis- tiken med mer än 50 %, vilket tillsammans med vår framgång med externa postdoktorer är glädjande, då dessa är faktorer som enligt DI-projektet kommer att påverka vår tilldelning av fakultetsmedel vid Chalmers. I övrigt var 2015 ett bra år vad det gäller ny extern fi nansiering, med me- del från bland annat EU, SSF, Vinnova och VR. Nya engagemang inom Chalmers styrkeområden har gjort oss mer synliga på den arenan, vilket annars varit trögt för oss. Här fi nns en potential för framtiden. Bo Berndtsson belönades med Eva och Lars Gårdings pris i matematik under året, för sin framgångsrika forskningsverksamhet. Mot bakgrund av framgångarna ovan för avdelningen, vill jag lyfta fram det enastående arbete vår administrativa avdelning gjort för att göra dem möjliga. Stor aktivitet kräver ett väl fungerande stödsystem, vilket vi har glädjen att ha. Avslutningsvis vill jag så tacka för mig som avdelningschef för matematik. Eftersom jag slutar som sådan 30 juni 2016 är detta den sista sammanfattnin- gen av verksamheten vid avdelningen jag gör för årsredovisningen. I våras hade vi ett lärar- möte som präglades av jubileets anda. Det var ett tillfälle att minnas vår historia med stolthet och refl ektera tillsammans över vår framtid. Nästa lärarmöte är planerat med övernattning i Varberg. Där skall vi ha en or- dentlig diskussion om vår undervisning. Vi levererar bra kurser, Kerstin Wiklander tilldelades Naturvetenskapliga fakultetens stora Pedagogiska Pris 2015, och vi kan bli ännu skickligare i vår undervisning. Hoppas att många ansluter sig och aktivt deltar! Inexpensive equipment, new methods of distribution, and a very eager audi- ence have all launched a renaissance in non-fiction film making and viewing. The very best of these non-fiction films are as entertaining as the best Hol- lywood blockbusters. Because they are true, their storylines seem fresh with authentic plot twists, real characters, and truth stranger than fiction. Most true films are solidly informative, and a few are genuinely useful like a tool. The rise of documentaries and true cinema is felt not only in movie theaters, but on network TV and cable channels as well. Reality TV, non-fiction stations like the History Channel or Discovery, and BBC imports have increased the choices in true films tremendously. There’s no time to watch them all, and little guidance to what’s great. In this book I offer 200+ great true films. I define true films as documentaries, educational films, instructional how-to’s, and what the British call factuals – a non-fiction visual account. These 200 are the best non-fiction films I’ve found for general interest. I’ve watched all these films more than once. Sometimes thrice.
