134 Book Reviews / Iran and the Caucasus 16 (2012) 134-136 Brill’s Series of Primary Sources: Western Travelers in the Islamic World (http: //www.primarysourcesonline.nl/c19/). Brill’s online Series of Western travel literature on the Islamic World contains more than 220 main written sources by Western travellers, missioners, merchants, diplomatic representatives from early mediaeval period till the 20th century. It is a huge collection of important primary sources for the political, cultural, economic, ethnographical and differ- ent other issues of the history of late mediaeval and early modern Islamic societies from Africa to India and from the Caucasus to Arabic peninsula. In this review, we will focus only on some main sources listed in the Series concerning Iran and especially the history of the Safavids. However, for the Timurid period one of the most valuable sources is the narrative of the embassy of Ruy Gonzalez de Clavijo to the court of Timur at Samarcand in 1403-1406 whose travel laid through Iran. This narrative was translated from Spanish into English for the first time in 1859 by Clemente Ri Markham with notes, preface and an introduction on Timur Lang’s life. There is also the publication of the Spanish text with Russian translation by I. I. Sreznevskij in St. Petersburg in 1881. The next source to be introduced relates the 15th century’s history of Iran and includes the reports of Venetian ambassadors to the court of Uzun Hasan Aq Qoyunlu who was the ruler of Western Iran and Aturpa- takan (Azerbaijan). Those are Caterino Zeno, ambassador in 1471-1473; Giosofat Barbaro, ambassador in 1471-1478; and Ambrogio Contarini, ambassador in 1474-1476. -
A Narrative of Italian Travels in Persia, in the Fifteenth and Sixteen Centuries

The close of the fifteenth century is an epoch in the history of the East, and especially of Persia, of which but little is known. The blast of Timour's invasion had swept over that historic land and left it deso- late. These four Accounts of Travels by Europeans are, therefore, especially interesting in a geographi- cal and historical point of view, and will, with the books of Barbaro and Contarini, which are in Ilamusio's collection, complete the series of Italian voyages about that period. In order clearly to un- derstand the facts brought forward, it will be neces- sary to glance at the motives of policy which started the embassies, and the historical changes which in- fluenced their results. In Eastern Europe the Byzantine empire had, after a long and gradual decline, at length crumbled into ruins beneath the power of the Ottomans, which threatened to be as great a scourge to Europe as that of Timur (or Tamerlane) had been to Asia, while the stability and vitality of their empire oifered a great contrast to the ephemeral charac- A 11 A NARRATIVE OF ter of Timur's dominion. -

INFORMATION TO USERS This reproduction was made from a copy of a document sent to us for microfilming. While the most advanced technology has been used to photograph and reproduce this document, the quality of the reproduction is heavily dependent upon the quality of the material submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help clarify markings or notations which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or “target” for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is “Missing Page(s)”. If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting througli an image and duplicating adjacent pages to assure complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a round black mark, it is an indication of either blurred copy because of movement during exposure, duplicate copy, or copyrighted materials that should not have been filmed. For blurred pages, a good image of the page can be found in the adjacent frame. If copyrighted materials were deleted, a target note will appear listing the pages in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., is part of the material being photographed, a definite method of “sectioning” the material has been followed. It is customary to begin filming at the upper left hand comer of a large sheet and to continue from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. If necessary, sectioning is continued again—beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. -

CHAPTER ONE: a HISTORICAL BACKGROUND the Venetian State
On the Knowledge of Persia in the Republic of Venice 7 CHAPTER ONE: A HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The Venetian state developed first as an overseas colonial empire and only later became a continental power, maintaining a strong vocation for international trade virtually until the last days of the Serenissima. Trade and shipping were openly acknowledged as the pillars of Venice’s might and wealth, and trade included Persia as well as lands which were connected to Persia, to a various degree and extent, by a number of historical, political, economic, cultural and linguistic ties. The Venetian merchants residing in Persia at any given time must have been always less numerous than those living in Byzantine Constantinople, the Ottoman Empire, or the Black Sea basin and the Crimea at the heyday of Venetian power, but their presence was not a negligible one. Thus, it is not surprising that a steady flow of information on Persia arrived to Venice, and that much of this information was produced or at least conveyed by traders. At an iconographic level, the inhabitants of Persia and of the lands surrounding it were (and still are) represented in the very political, ceremonial and symbolic heart of Venice, the Palazzo Ducale (which was the seat of the nominal head of the State, the Doge, as well as that of many government bodies, including those which were the expression of the paramount role of Venetian nobility and through which the nobility actually ruled the Republic, namely, the Maggior Consi- glio and the Senato) and the adjacent Basilica di S. Marco (which was the private chapel of the Doge). -

Travels to Tana and Persia
TRAVELS TO TANA AND PERSIA, / BY JOSAFA BARBARO AND AMBROGIO CONTARINI. TRANSLATED FROM THF. ITALIAN I'.Y WILLIAM THOMAS, CLERK OF THE COUNCIL TO EDWARD VI, AND BY S. A. ROY, ESQ. AND EDITED, WITH AN INTRODVCTION, BY LOKD STANLEY OF ALDEBLEY. LONDON; PRINTED FOR rilE IlAKLrYT .S0CIP:TY M.DCCC.LXXIII. (y ; INTEODUCTION The volume herewith given to the members of the Ilakhiyt Society, contains six narratives by Italians, of their travels in Persia about the time of Shah Ismail. Mr. Charles Grey, who has translated and edited four of these travels, having accompanied Sir Bartle Frere to Zanguibar, has been unable to finish the printing of his book, and the correction of his proofs has been entrusted to me. As all these travel- lers were almost contemporaries, and as they refer to one another, the council have thought it best to give them to members in one single volume. Shah Ismail, or Ismail Sufy, is the chief personage in this volume ; he found Persia in disorder, and reunited it ; he revived the Persian nationality, and very much increased the division which existed be- tween Persia and the rest of the Mussulman States a division or schism which has been erroneously called i^eligious, but which originally was national and political, and, as revived and augmented by Shah Is- mail, eritirely national. The feelings which animated tlie earlier Persians to reject the first three caliphs, were the national repulsion of the Persians to their Arab conquerors, and a preference for hereditary b VI INTRODUCTION. succession instead of popular election. -

W 1458 r. poślubił on Teodorę, córkę cesarza Trapezuntu Jana IV Komnena, gwarantując jej wolność wy- znania. Uzun Hassan objął protektorat nad Trapezuntem i zaczął wchodzić w coraz to nowe alianse polityczne z chrześcijanami, mające ostrze anty- tureckie1.
