From the Russian front to the Chinese Revolution, from Dresden to Guernica, Gloria Victoria combines elements of surrealism and cubism to orchestrate an explosive nightmare in the name of peace. Winner of the FIPRESCI Award at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Gloria Victoria is set to music from Shostakovich’s Leningrad Symphony, and joins Ushev’s previous works Drux Flux and Tower Bawher as an animated dialogue between music and images. The film is inspired by Darwin’s theory of evolution and the myths of Narcissus and Prometheus. The film was directed by Philippe Baylaucq and was choreographed by José Navas.” Beatrice Coron’s Daily Battles FILM DIRECTOR James Stewart COUNTRY Canada DURATION 6:41 YEAR OF PRODUCTION 2012 PRODUCTION COMPANY Geneva Films Co DESCRIPTION Béatrice Coron’s Daily Battles is a short 3D film about a work of art. Toronto International Stereoscopic 3D Conference Day 1 Friday Sept. 20, 2013 19:30 & 21:30 & 23:00 Chiral Eyes FILM DIRECTOR Willy LeMaitre COUNTRY Canada DURATION 4:53 YEAR OF PRODUCTION 2011 PRODUCTION COMPANY Independent Artist DESCRIPTION “Chiral Eyes is a stereo-3D video installation by Willy LeMaitre. The dramatic narrative depicts the dual nature and internal negotiations of a polarized individual. The subject appears on-screen as two opposing versions of the same person. The viewer’s left and right eyes see isolated portrayals of the individual. While wearing polarized glasses, both views are combined to produce the stereoscopic 3d image. Viewers of the work can read the narrative in variable ways by alternatively blinking or covering either of their eyes. Chirality refers to handedness in Greek and is a property in Stereochemistry of molecules having a non-super-imposable mirror image. The video looks at the notion of difference in terms of sidedness. The formation of depth perception, in human terms, as a concordance of left and right views is the literal and metaphorical focus of the 3D stereo-video short.” Toronto International Stereoscopic 3D Conference Day 1 Friday Sept. 20, 2013 19:30 NFB Retrospective Drux Flux FILM DIRECTOR Theodore Ushev DURATION 4:45 DESCRIPTION Part figurative, part abstract, Drux Flux is an animated short comprised of fast-flowing images showing modern people crushed by industry. Inspired by philosopher Herbert Marcuse’s One-Dimensional Man, the filmmaker deconstructs industrial scenes and their terrifying geometry to show the inhumanity of progress.

  • Ten Years Supporting, Delivering & Promoting the Whole Spectrum of Animation
TEN YEARS SUPPORTING, DELIVERING & PROMOTING THE WHOLE SPECTRUM OF ANIMATION Directors Message Wow – we made it to our 10th anniversary!! Who would have thought it? From very humble beginnings – our first festival in 2004 screened at the now-defunct Rupert Street Cinema in Piccadilly – to LIAF 2013, 10 days at 3 different venues. We have survived - sort of. Over 10 years we’ve received more than 12,000 entries, screened more than 2,500 films, and had some of the most talented animators in the world come and hang out with us. And we’ve had a ball on the way. It’s time to blow our own trumpet. As well as being the largest festival of it’s kind in the UK in terms of films and programmes screened, we have a substantial touring component and we run satellite events all year-round. We’ve screened at festivals, cinemas, theatres and colleges all around the world and in the UK and hopefully we have spread the word that animation is a valid artform that is only limited by the animator’s imagination. In short, our maxim is that in animation anything can happen. Long may this be. There are far too may people to thank here (hopefully you know who you are) but the guidance and immense work-rate of my co-Director Malcolm Turner has to be acknowledged. Way back when in our ground zero - actually in the year 1999 - I still vividly recall that very first meeting Malcolm and I had with our then-colleague Susi Allender in the back garden of our Melbourne flat.
