Introduction Over the past one hundred years, spiritual gifts have become a topic of major debate within the church. Pentecostal and other charismatic churches have caused most Christians in all denominations to re-evaluate spiritual gifts. This is especially the case for “supernatural gifts” such as prophecy, healing, and speaking in tongues. This renewed interest in spiritual gifts has caused many to ask questions and ultimately remain more confused than before on the issue. In 1 Corinthians 12-14 the apostle Paul discusses spiritual gifts at length. As Vintage Church journeys through our sermon series on 1 Corinthians entitled “In the City. For the City.”, we will discuss the topic of spiritual gifts from 1 Corinthians 12-14. This mini-series is entitled “Power Up.” It is our hope that this mini-series will bring clarity to the issue of spiritual gifts and provide freedom to serve Christ and his church however he has gifted you. II. What Are Spiritual Gifts? Simply put, the definition of a spiritual gift is the manifestation of God’s grace on the life of a believer in Jesus Christ. In the New Testament a handful of words are used for spiritual gifts, but the primary word used is charismata. -

Baptism in the Holy Spirit Why study this now? What is the point of further study of this subject? Is it not the case that Charismatics accept the doctrine as it stands and cessationists reject it as a new experience? The positions are entrenched; why study it any more? What is new is that recent developments (e.g. the Toronto Experience) have so shocked many Charismatics that they now question the validity of their previous teaching, but do not doubt they had a genuine encounter with God in the past. At the same time, some cessationists are looking for more than dry, formal liturgy but do not agree with the concept of a second blessing . Is it not time for a re- evaluation of the apologetic of Charismatic teachers, yet opening up the teaching of the New Testament on what it means to be filled with the Spirit and to walk in the Spirit? There is no doubt that the Bible offers believers a walk with God that supersedes ordinary human life, even godly Enoch and sinful Samson knew something of this. Just what is it and how do we obey God in our reception of it? What was wrong with the previous teaching? A brief recapitulation of recent history and especially Charismatic history The beginnings of the modern idea of the baptism For many years, since Topeka in 1901 1 and Azusa Street in 1906 2, the doctrine of the baptism in, with or by the Holy Spirit remained largely the province of the Pentecostal churches of various sorts. -

Why build a biblical/theological library? Books are to the minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ what tools are to the carpenter: the essentials of the trade. A call to ministry is a call to preparation, and the building of a ministry library is a must, not an option. As the apostle Paul faced his impending death, he still remained a student, requesting of Timothy that he bring the books when he came to visit him in prison (2 Tim. 4:13). This booklet has been prepared for those who desire to follow in Paul’s steps. Warren Wiersbe offers some sound wisdom for this very task: “My books are my tools, and I use them. I cannot afford to be a book collector; neither the budget nor the diminishing shelf space ... permits such a luxury.... I enjoy my library. Each book is a friend that converses with and teaches me. Better to have fewer of the best books than to clutter your shelves with volumes that cannot serve you well. Above all, love your books, use them, and dedicate all you learn to the service of Jesus Christ.”1 To that end we have provided more than 1,000 titles to assist you in building your library and faithfully serving our Lord. Most titles are written from an evangelical perspective, having been authored by individuals who affirm the full authority and inspiration of Scripture (Matt. 5:17-18; 2 Tim. 3:16-17; 2 Pet. 1:20-21). THE LEGACY OF THE CHARISMATIC MOVEMENT By Pastor Chris Hand – Crich Baptist Church, Derbyshire, U.K. Today I am going to try to look at the legacy of the charismatic movement as it affects the reformed Christian churches in the UK. There will be some reference to the wider legacy to the wider evangelical and non-evangelical churches. But that is not my main concern. Neither am I going to look in detail at the legacy in respect of its effect or non-effect on moral, spiritual, political and cultural developments in our nation, interesting subject though that would be. The verses we read a moment ago summarise my view – I am not expecting grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles. There is not time to justify that view at length here but I speak as one who is a cessationist and convinced of the need for reverent worship. Rather we are going to home in, as best we can, on matters nearer to us. What has been the effect of the charismatic movement on us, on people like us, on churches like ours? We might think some of these effects are self-evident and indeed many are. We shall look at some of them in a moment. But, in addition, has the charismatic movement shaped our thinking and the thinking of believers like us in more subtle ways? Has it exposed weaknesses, insecurities or fears in us? Has it affected our views on worship and the conduct of public meetings? So we might include in our review of the legacy of the charismatic movement the question as to whether it has been a window into our own souls and from which we can learn and grow. -

JETS 43/1 (March 2000) 37–51 CONFUSING WORD AND CONCEPT IN “SPIRITUAL GIFTS”: HAVE WE FORGOTTEN JAMES BARR’S EXHORTATIONS? KENNETH BERDING* I. INTRODUCTION “Spiritual gifts” have generated more discussion, both popular and schol- arly, than any of us could (or would want to) read. But where did we obtain our idea of what a “gift” is? Is it from exegesis of the relevant Biblical texts or from a widespread conception which has gone unchallenged for too long? In this essay it will be argued that systematic and popular theology (almost entirely) and Biblical scholarship (to a lesser degree) are still in˘uenced by a pre-James Barr conception of the word cavrisma. In his revolutionary book, The Semantics of Biblical Language, Barr insisted: I now would wish to rea¯rm this much more forcibly, with especially the in- sistence that lexicographic research should be directed towards the semantics of words in their particular occurrences and not towards the assembly of a stock of persuasive and distinctive terms which could be regarded as a linguistic re˘ection of the theological realities.1 This distinction between theological con- cept and the actual function/meaning of a word in a given passage has received wide acceptance among exegetes. It is now understood that a major problem with Kittel’s massive set2 is that it is in fact “not lexicography at all, but rather the study of concepts on the basis of the terms used to express them.”3 Some patterns, however, die hard, particularly when they are wide- spread and deeply entrenched.
