The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is a not-for-profit, professional organisation with 168,000 members worldwide. The local South Australian Section (SPE-SA) has 500 members and is run by a team of enthusiastic volunteers. SPE’s vision is to enable the sharing of technical knowledge amongst its members, to meet the world’s growing energy needs, in a safe and environmentally responsible manner. As part of our commitment to the local community, SPE-SA actively supports the promotion of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) based learning. We see this as an investment in the next generation of talented students who will become South Australia’s future engineers and leaders. SPE-SA has been an avid supporter of MASA for the past two decades, through sponsorship of the School Mathematics Competition. Over the past 30 years our volunteers have also been actively engaged with the broader community via school visits, organisation of student / teacher workshop and Science Alive! 7 Introduction to Actuarial Science The Australian National University (ANU) is running a special version of its popular Introduction to Actuarial Science course for Year 11/12 students in Australia over a flexible time period within Term 4 2018 to Term 1 2019. The course is a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) and is FREE for all students. The purpose of the course is to provide students considering an actuarial career with an interactive introduction to the profession. As such, it is a perfect fit for high school students who are strong in maths to find out if an actuarial degree would be good university program choice for them. The already-existing online material in the MOOC will be supplemented with additional guidance for teachers and students, along with regular webinar sessions between students and ANU academic staff.
