Vol 57 No.3 DEC 2009 FILE.Indd
New Horizons in Education, Vol.57, No.3 (Special Issue), December 2009 Where we are now: a review of service-learning among SLAN Colleges and universities in Asia Florence E. McCarthy International Christian University Abstract Background: Service-learning in the Service-Learning Asian Network (SLAN), is organized as part of the academic structure of member institutions, and includes both international and community (domestic) service-learning. SLAN began with the exchange of students between SLAN institutions and has progressed to multicultural service-learning exchange programs and collaborative research. Aim: The intent of this article is to illustrate the development of Asian service-learning by reviewing the progress that has been made in six SLAN service-learning programs, illustrating differences and shared characteristics. These include: consistency in programs, multicultural exchange, and collaborative research. Lessons learned and main outcomes of the research are presented. Argument: Among lessons learned are the importance of multicultural programs to promote greater acceptance and understanding of socio-cultural differences by students; the importance of student preparation before service, and community agency orientation to enhance the reciprocities of exchange between students, agency staff, and local people. Student outcomes include personal growth, enhanced social skills, intercultural learning, and increased academic abilities. Conclusions: Progress has been made in institutionalizing service-learning among SLAN institutions. -

Munsang's 90Th Anniversary in Pictures
Succession with Pride: Munsang’s 90th Anniversary in Pictures Succession with Pride: Munsang’s 90 th Anniversary in Pictures Front cover designed by Yeung Sin Tung (F.3B) Back cover designed by Kan Po Shuen (F.4B) Advisors: Ms Lam Mau, Ms Wong Ling, Ms Wong Kam Hung, Mr Chow Chi Shing 103 Foreword Succession with Pride: Munsang’s 90th Anniversary in Pictures The School Year 2015 -2016 marks a milestone for Munsangnites: We are proud to celebrate the 90th Anniversary of our School, which has already carved a niche among the paragons in the education sector for our history that lasts almost a century in Hong Kong. The last 90 years are brimming with excitement, turbulence and glory for us: We navigated uncharted waters in our early days on Kai Tack Bund, managed to weather storms and remain robust during the Japanese Occupation in 1930s – 40s, and we were, and still continue to be so, dynamic and resilient enough to scale new heights not only in Kowloon City, but also across the territory, and finally on a world scale: It is our mission to sharpen students’ global visions. In this brochure, you are going to find snapshots that represent the pride we take in the glorious Munsang history, and each celebratory event symbolises our determination to render our utmost to serve our students, our School, and the Hong Kong community. Each of the programmes, in pictures, speaks volumes about our resolve to keep Munsang shining as ever from 1926 onwards. We are custodians of the past, and architects of the future! 1 Contents Kick-off Ceremony .................................................................................................................................. -

Creativity Needs to Be Nurtured and En- Couraged in Children Today in Order for Them to Become Thought Pioneers Tomorrow
Issue #4 From the Helm “We live at a time where creative, original thinking is dangerously low. And yet we need exactly this thinking to solve our individual, community, organisational and global challenges and create a sustainable future.” - Tania de Jong (award-winning social entrepreneur). Based on this insight, one could argue that creativity needs to be nurtured and en- couraged in children today in order for them to become thought pioneers tomorrow. Developing creative thinkers may be the solution to many of the problems our world faces today. They see the world in new ways and find hidden patterns to unrelated phenomenon. “Creativity is a skill that can be developed and a process that can be managed. Creativity begins with a foundation of knowledge, learning a discipline, and mastering a way of thinking”, taken from a study on The Effectiveness of Creativity Training by George Land. It requires practice and a supportive environment in which to flourish. Every child has the potential to be creative and the school curriculum needs to provide opportunities for pupils to explore and enhance their creativity. Education is an exciting journey and imagination, originality and resourcefulness are vital in this journey. Schools need to encourage experimentation and allow for failure. Children need to be brave and take risks. In the lower grades, the focus needs to be more on process and less on results. Creative children are flexible, adapt more easily to change and have the ability to turn challenges into opportunities. Carol-Anne Conradie Head of Junior Primary Creativity College Champions Arin Pincus We congratulate Arin Pincus on the wonderful achievement of having her short story “My Mother” being published in the 2017 edition of English Alive. -
