Sasowsky ii ABSTRACT Encamped near Harper’s Ferry, Virginia, on September 15, 1861, Col. John White Geary of the 28th Pennsylvania Infantry wrote to his wife, Mary Church Henderson Geary. Geary described the majestic scene before him as the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers converged at a point before traveling toward the Chesapeake Bay. Sitting at the confluence of these two important waterways, Geary depicted the Potomac River as being “a clear beautiful stream, it’s [sic] resistless tide rushing headlong over the rocky surface of its channel and roaring with the voice of many waters.” Conversely, Geary perceived the Shenandoah River as being “very muddy at present, and rolls its waters along with equal haste, into the same channel with the Potomac, but the waters seem to refuse to commingle and become one.” Geary juxtaposed his description of these two bodies of water “refusing to join their waters and mingle into one grand kindred stream” against the United States’ inability to overcome its own political, economic, and social differences and reunite as one country. Geary’s metaphor also can be applied to the contested borderland of Jefferson County, West Virginia. Four years of continual encampments, foraging, marching, and skirmishing during the American Civil War significantly transformed Jefferson County’s social, economic, and political institutions. This borderland county served as a contested and negotiated landscape as both Union and Confederate armies sought to gain control of the region’s valuable industries and transportation networks. By relying upon iii agricultural resources to subsidize their provisions, soldiers also temporarily altered local cultivators’ farming practices. The Union and Confederate armies also utilized the natural and man-made landscape for military purposes. The contestation of public and private space compelled residents to engage in negotiated relationships with soldiers. Furthermore, whereas Jefferson County inhabitants began the conflict within the political borders of Virginia, by the conclusion of the war, residents found themselves part of the newly formed state of West Virginia. This dissertation seeks to understand how four years of continual encampments, foraging, marching, and skirmishing during the Civil War significantly transformed the natural landscape and socio-economic structures of Jefferson County. iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS While researching and writing this dissertation, I have encountered a number of people who I cannot thank enough for helping see this project to completion. Rich Martin’s class, “The Historical and Political Legacies of the Vietnam Era,” demonstrated how I could incorporate my passion for politics with history. Soldiers, civilians, and slaves listened to and performed popular songs almost constantly. The heightened political and emotional climate of the war created a need for Americans to express themselves in a variety of ways, and music was one of the best. It did not require a high level of literacy and it could be performed in groups to ensure that the ideas embedded in each song immediately reached a large audience. Previous studies of Civil War music have focused on the music itself. Historians and musicologists have examined the types of songs published during the war and considered how they reflected the popular mood of northerners and southerners. This study utilizes the letters, diaries, memoirs, and newspapers of the 1860s to delve deeper and determine what roles music played in Civil War America. This study begins by examining the explosion of professional and amateur music that accompanied the onset of the Civil War. Of the songs produced by this explosion, the most popular and resonant were those that addressed the political causes of the war and were adopted as the rallying cries of northerners and southerners. All classes of Americans used songs in a variety of ways, and this study specifically examines the role of music on the home-front, in the armies, and among African Americans.

This study argues that a series of events of violent antislavery and southern perceptions of northern support for them caused white southerners to rethink the value of the Union and their place in it. John Brown’s raid at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, and northern expressions of personal support for Brown brought the Union into question in white southern eyes. White southerners were shocked when Republican governors in northern states acted to protect members of John Brown’s organization from prosecution in Virginia. Southern states invested large sums of money in their militia forces, and explored laws to control potentially dangerous populations such as northern travelling salesmen, whites “tampering” with slaves, and free African-Americans. Many Republicans endorsed a book by Hinton Rowan Helper which southerners believed encouraged antislavery violence and a Senate committee investigated whether an antislavery conspiracy had existed before Harpers Ferry. In the summer of 1860, a series of unexplained fires in Texas exacerbated white southern fear. As the presidential election approached in 1860, white southerners hoped for northern voters to repudiate the Republicans. When northern voters did not, white southerners generally rejected the Union.

H CRIMSON UNION ARMY VETERANS Total served Died in service Killed in action Died by disease Harvard College grads 475 73 69 26 Harvard College- non grads 114 22 Harvard Graduate schools 349 22 NA NA Total 938 117 69 26 The above total of Harvard alumni who died in the service of the Union included 5 major generals, 3 Brigadier Generals, 6 colonels, 19 LT Colonels and majors, 17 junior officers in the Army, 3 sergeants plus 3 Naval officers, including 2 Medical doctors. 72% of all Harvard alumni who served in the Civil War fought for the Union which represent 52% of the sons of Harvard killed in action during this conflict. As result among Harvard alumni, Union military losses were 10% compared with a 21% casualty rate for the Confederate Army. The battle of Gettysburg (PA) had the highest amount of Harvard alumni serving in the Union Army who were killed in action (i.e. 11), in addition 3 Harvard alumni Confederates also died in this battle. Secondly, seven Crimson warriors made the supreme sacrifice for the Union at Antietam (MD) with 5 more were killed in the battles of Cedar Mountain (VA) and Fredericksburg (VA). As expected, most of the Harvard alumni who died in the service of the Union were born and raised in the Northeastern states (e.g. 74% from Massachusetts). However, 9 Harvard alumni Union casualties were from the Mid West including one from the border state of Missouri. None of these Harvard men were from southern states. The below men who made the supreme sacrifice for their country to preserve the union which also resulted in the abolition of slavery.
