    This Week in New Brunswick History In Fredericton, Lieutenant-Governor Sir Howard Douglas officially opens Kings January 1, 1829 College (University of New Brunswick), and the Old Arts building (Sir Howard Douglas Hall) – Canada’s oldest university building. The first Baptist seminary in New Brunswick is opened on York Street in January 1, 1836 Fredericton, with the Rev. Frederick W. Miles appointed Principal. Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) becomes responsible for all lines formerly January 1, 1912 operated by the Dominion Atlantic Railway (DAR) - according to a 999 year lease arrangement. January 1, 1952 The town of Dieppe is incorporated. January 1, 1958 The city of Campbellton and town of Shippagan become incorporated January 1, 1966 The city of Bathurst and town of Tracadie become incorporated. Louis B. Mayer, one of the founders of MGM Studios (Hollywood, California), January 2, 1904 leaves his family home in Saint John, destined for Boston (Massachusetts). New Brunswick is officially divided into eight counties of Saint John, Westmorland, Charlotte, Northumberland, King’s, Queen’s, York and Sunbury. January 3, 1786 Within each county a Shire Town is designated, and civil parishes are also established. The first meeting of the New Brunswick Legislature is held at the Mallard House January 3, 1786 on King Street in Saint John.     JOURNAL OF NEW BRUNSWICK STUDIES Issue 2 (2011) Public Policy and the Moment of Crisis in New Brunswick: An Interview with Donald Savoie Tony Tremblay Abstract Université de Moncton professor Donald Savoie is well known to New Brunswickers. He has been a voice for fiscal responsibility, and he has made a career of thinking outside the confines of our much-cherished programs of distributive federalism—programs that have favoured central Canada at the expense of the regions. This interview with Professor Savoie picks up from an essay he wrote in the first issue of the Journal of New Brunswick Studies/Revue d’études sur le Nouveau-Brunswick. That essay urged New Brunswickers to make the most of the fiscal crisis we are now in, calling on us to act decisively to get our fiscal house in order before calamity (in the form of economic collapse) does it for us. Because of the interest in Professor Savoie’s essay and the importance of his message in a province searching for alternatives to deficit spending and increasingly tight-fisted federalism, we thought it wise to continue the discussion.     6 oct 2014 – Times & Transcript Q& A with PREMIER-DESIGNATE BRIAN GALLANT Brent mazerolle’s On Tuesday, Shediac Bridge’s Brian Alexander Gallant will be sworn in as the 33rd premier of New Brunswick. It’s the climactic end to years of climbing through the political ranks for Gallant, a McGill and Université de Moncton educated lawyer who first ran for the legislature in 2006 while still a student. It’s of course the beginning of a much bigger journey for both Gallant and the province he will lead.The recent election campaign was spirited,occasionally nasty and ultimately a bit bizarre because of an election-night failure of the province’s vote tabulation system. By the time the premier-designate dropped by the Times & Transcript last week for a post-election chat, it seemed likely a million words had already been written about the election and its every issue,from the economy and education to abortion and shale gas exploration. The goal, then, was for the premier-designate and Times & Transcript reporter Brent Mazerolle to not debate the election and its issues all over again. Tuesday will mark the beginning of another four years of that. Instead, Gallant’s and Mazerolle’s conversation was a pause from that to talk more globally about what the results of Sept.22,belated as they were, mean for Brian Gallant and for the rest of the people of New Brunswick.
