  • Justin Brown's NYEUSI
Justin Brown’s NYEUSI (USA) bio “There’s nothing about the way he plays that boxes him into any particular era or camp” - Modern Drummer “I cannot think of a more highly anticipated debut by an artist right now that is also a lynchpin in today’s creative music scene. I will be first to listen” - WBGO Born in Richmond, California (USA), drummer Justin Brown is one of the most versatile and sought after drummers of this generation. After years as an essential member of groups led by Ambrose Akinmusire, Thundercat, and Flying Lotus – he’s also been tapped to round out the sound for Esperanza Spalding, Avishai Cohen (trumpet), Terence Blanchard, Bilal, Vijay Iyer, and many others – Brown is finally ready to extend his reach beyond the drum set to lead his own band, NYEUSI. Justin started drumming at two years-old in church and began his formal jazz education at 10 with the Young Musician’s Program at UC Berkeley and later Berkeley High. Encouraged to attend Juilliard after being awarded a full scholarship, he moved to New York in 2004, but withdrew on the first day to pursue a life-changing career experience over education, playing on the road with Kenny Garrett and Josh Roseman. In June 2018 Justin released his first album as a leader ‘NYEUSI’ on Biophilia Records. Rounding out NYEUSI are Jason Lindner (Now vs Now, Donny McCaslin, David Bowie) and Fabian Almazan (Mark Guiliana Jazz Quartet, Terence Blanchard) on keys, Burniss Earl Travis (Robert Glasper) on bass, and Mark Shim (Mingus Big Band) on wind controller.

JAZZ EDUCATION IN ISRAEL by LEE CAPLAN A Thesis submitted to the Graduate School-Newark Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Graduate Program in Jazz History and Research written under the direction of Dr. Henry Martin and approved by ___________________________________ ___________________________________ Newark, New Jersey May,2017 ©2017 Lee Caplan ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS JAZZ EDUCATION IN ISRAEL By LEE CAPLAN Thesis Director Dr. Henry Martin Jazz Education in Israel is indebted to three key figures – Zvi Keren, Arnie Lawrence, and Mel Keller. This thesis explores how Jazz developed in Israel and the role education played. Jazz Education in Israel discusses the origin of educational programs such as the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music (1985) and the New School Jazz Program (1986). One question that was imperative to this study was attempting to discover exactly how Jazz became a cultural import and export within Israel. Through interviews included in this thesis, this study uncovers just that. The interviews include figures such as Tal Ronen, Dr. Arnon Palty, Dr. Alona Sagee, and Keren Yair Dagan. As technology gets more advanced and the world gets smaller, Jazz finds itself playing a larger role in humanity as a whole. iii Preface The idea for this thesis came to me when I was traveling abroad during the summer of 2015. I was enjoying sightseeing throughout the streets of Ben Yehuda Jerusalem contemplating topics when all of a sudden I came across a jam session. I went over to listen to the music and was extremely surprised to find musicians from all parts of Europe coming together in a small Jazz venue in Israel playing bebop standards at break-neck speeds.

But he’s also had a major N impact on the scene as a member of Tarbaby, Ralph Alessi’s Baida Quartet, Tony Malaby’s Tamarindo, David Murray’s InTnity Quartet, Dave Douglas’ Brass Ecstasy, Avishai Cohen’s Triveni, Amir ElSaffar’s Two Rivers Ensemble and many others. Stopping by for a listening session in late summer, Waits, 43, lent us his generous, wide-open ears and got to the heart of what he values as a drummer. 1. BEFORE: It’s reminding me of [Tony] Malaby a little bit. And something about the drums is reminding me of Tom [Rainey]. But I’m not sure who it is. AFTER: Oh, OK, Jim-that makes sense! I see Jim out there on the road a lot, and I’m a big fan of his playing, but I haven’t heard a lot of his recordings. I’ve seen him live quite often. Wow, that’s a great album cover. He’s one of those consummate musicians-I’ve seen him at the piano.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Singing at Death’s Door: Late Style, Disability, and the Temporality of Illness in Popular Music A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Musicology by Tiffany Naiman 2017 © Copyright by Tiffany Naiman 2017 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Singing at Death’s Door: Late Style, Disability, and the Temporality of Illness in Popular Music by Tiffany Naiman Doctor of Philosophy in Musicology University of California, Los Angeles, 2017 Professor Robert W. Fink, Co-Chair Professor Raymond L. Knapp, Co-Chair This dissertation investigates musical expressions of temporal alterities in works created by popular music artists, identifying their aesthetic responses as their bodies become ill, disabled, and they become more aware of mortality. I propose a critical, hermeneutic, and theoretical method drawn from Edward Said’s appropriation of Adorno’s expression “late style” that I have designated ill style, a form of creativity within a temporality of illness. Late style is discernable in works produced, paradigmatically, at the end of one’s career in “old age,” but late style may also be understood as an influence on artistic output at any stage of life if the subject is experiencing untimeliness and a disruption in access to the communal understanding of futurity and time, a possible consequence of factors other than age. I contend that late style, accelerated by illness, disrupts Western cultural attempts at ignoring precarious and finite nature of existence; the resulting expressions of lateness ask audiences to do the same. I offer a way in which to think more critically about what scholars consider late style, how it functions in popular ii music studies and society, and how it intersects with the fields of disability, gender, queer, and critical race studies, and the social sciences.

  • Bio Jason Lindner
BIO JASON LINDNER "Rhythm provides more than a heartbeat for Jason Lindner. It also seems to fuel his respiratory functions and digestive activity, and maybe his neurons. What matters to him is groove, however it comes." — The New York Times Brooklyn-native and winner of two Grammy Awards in 2017, Jason Lindner spent the late nights of his early teen years in jazz clubs, where he was taken-in by the old jazz masters in New York City: Frank Hewitt, Jimmy Lovelace, Gilly Goggins, “all the old cats you never heard of because of hard times and hard luck,” adds Jason. In his extensive career this young New York pioneer was musical director of Lauryn Hill and Meshel Ndegeocello. In addition to Now vs Now, Lindner leads the 11-piece art ensemble Breeding Ground and performs with Mark Guiliana’s Beat Music, Dafnis Prieto's Proverb Trio featuring Kokayi, Donny McCaslin's electric band and Anat Cohen's jazz quartet. In 2015 and 2016 Jason became a keyboardist and a pivotal music part of David Bowie's music in the album 'Blackstar', with which Lindner won two Grammy's in 2017. Jason began experimenting with electric live bands early this millennium with a desire to create a new sound. That's how Now vs Now was formed back in 2006 featuring Panagiotis Andreou on bass and Mark Guiliana on drums (Justin Tyson changed Mark Guiliana several years ago). If music is about ideas expressed via the right notes in the best possible configuration using the best sounds, this is what Now Vs Now delivers.

  • Donny Mccaslin August 2012 Acclaimed Saxophonist Donny
Donny McCaslin August 2012 Acclaimed saxophonist Donny McCaslin takes a bold leap forward with his tenth album as a leader, Casting for Gravity. McCaslin's gargantuan tenor sound finds an ideal setting to rampage through in the ferocious grooves and electronic textures of keyboardist Jason Lindner, bassist Tim Lefebvre, and drummer Mark Guiliana. Couching his trademark gift for brawny melodies in lurching dub rhythms, swirling electronica inspired atmospheres, and arena-rock power, McCaslin has crafted a game-changer of an album, fusing a wealth of forward- looking influences into one wholly new modern jazz sound. Casting for Gravity follows on the heels of 2011's highly acclaimed Perpetual Motion, which found McCaslin experimenting for the first time with merging his hard-charging acoustic sound with more funk-inflected electrified elements. But where that album was a blistering electro-acoustic hybrid, Casting for Gravity soars past fusion into alchemy, forging a visionary voice from eclectic influences. "I wanted to make a bigger record with more sonic layers," McCaslin explains. "I wanted to go a lot deeper into the electronic realm and push myself harder." McCaslin's initial forays into plugged-in territory were a reflection of his upbringing in Santa Cruz, California, where he was weaned on the deep, deep grooves of Tower of Power and Headhunters bassist Paul Jackson. Those influences remain in the percolating rhythms of "Bend" or the enormous musculature of "Stadium Jazz," inevitable how deeply ingrained they are into McCaslin's approach. But he wasted little time casting back into the past for inspiration on this outing, looking instead to ground-breaking contemporary artists.
