Tradition and Transformation: Cataloguing Chinese Art in the Middle and Late Imperial Eras Abstract After obtaining sovereignty, a new emperor of China often gathers the imperial collections of previous dynasties and uses them as evidence of the legitimacy of the new regime. Some emperors go further, commissioning the compilation projects of bibliographies of books and catalogues of artistic works in their imperial collections not only as inventories but also for proclaiming their imperial power. The imperial collections of art symbolize political and cultural predominance, present contemporary attitudes toward art and connoisseurship, and reflect emperors’ personal taste for art. The attempt of this research project is to explore the practice of art cataloguing during two of the most important reign periods in imperial China: Emperor Huizong of the Northern Song Dynasty (r. 1101-1125) and Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty (r. 1736-1795). Through examining the format and content of the selected painting, calligraphy, and bronze catalogues compiled by both emperors, features of each catalogue reveal the development of cataloguing imperial artistic collections. -

LI ZHI IN ENGLISH-LANGUAGE SCHOLARSHIP Wennan Wu Abstract: Li Zhi (1527–1602) was a philosopher, historian and writer of the late Ming Dynasty. In terms of themes, besides the traditional social, political, historical and philosophical topics, more scholarship has been written about Li Zhi from the perspective of literary studies and the arts since 1980. Before 1980, translation was largely secondary to or an offshoot of the more principal goal of producing scholarly studies of Li Zhi and more extensive translation work has been published in the new millennium. With the development of Sino-western cultural communications, Sino-American scholars will cooperate to bring the translation and dissemination of Li Zhi to a new altitude both quantitatively and qualitatively, and establish the communicating bridge. Preservation of Lilong Neighborhoods in Shanghai
PRESERVATION OF LILONG NEIGHBORHOODS IN SHANGHAI: SOCIAL CHANGE AND SPATIAL RIGHTS A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in Historic Preservation Planning by Ran Yan August 2013 © 2013 Ran Yan ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT As once the most common form of dwelling in Shanghai, the Lilong has played a vital role in Shanghai’s local culture. Gradually declining in number during the second half of the 20th century, it is now faced with a challenging and undecided future. This thesis aims to further the discussion of the preservation of Lilong neighborhoods in its fundamental relation with people and basic social context. Four case studies, Tian Zi Fang, Jian Ye Li, Jing An Bie Shu and Bu Gao Li, are used to add some realistic, specific details and to deepen the reflection on this topic. Each of the cases has its special architectural features, residential composition, history, and current problems all of which provide some insight into the uniqueness and individuality of every Lilong neighborhood. In the end recommendations are made to address to Lilong residents’ right and to call for an equal way of Lilong preservation as a means to a better living environment for everyone and a more equitable society. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Ran Yan was born on August 9th, 1988 in Beijing, China, where she grew up and finished her early education. In 2011 she received her Bachelor of Engineering degree in Historic Preservation from Tongji University, in Shanghai. With a background in both architecture and historic preservation, she continued on to graduate study in the Historic Preservation Planning program at the City and Regional Planning Department of Cornell University. -
Tracing Confucianism in Contemporary China
TRACING CONFUCIANISM IN CONTEMPORARY CHINA Ruichang Wang and Ruiping Fan Abstract: With the reform and opening policy implemented by the Chinese government since the late 1970s, mainland China has witnessed a sustained resurgence of Confucianism first in academic studies and then in social practices. This essay traces the development of this resurgence and demonstrates how the essential elements and authentic moral and intellectual resources of long-standing Confucian culture have been recovered in scholarly concerns, ordinary ideas, and everyday life activities. We first introduce how the Modern New Confucianism reappeared in mainland China in the three groups of the Chinese scholars in the Confucian studies in the 1980s and early 1990s. Then we describe how a group of innovative mainland Confucian thinkers has since the mid-1990s come of age launching new versions of Confucian thought differing from that of the overseas New Confucians and their forefathers, followed by our summary of public Confucian pursuits and activities in the mainland society in the recent decade. Finally, we provide a few concluding remarks about the difficulties encountered in the Confucian development and our general expectations for future. 1 Introduction Confucianism is not just a philosophical doctrine constructed by Confucius (551- 479BCE) and developed by his followers. It is more like a religion in the general sense. In fact, Confucius took himself as a cultural transmitter rather than a creator (cf. Congruity (Li) As Ethical Notion in Zhu Xi's Theory of Renxing

This article deals with the cosmology and ethics of Zhu Xi (朱熹) and reconstructs the relation between these two fields of inquiry in Zhu Xi’s philosophy. This article opposes the still common view in contemporary scholarship that portrays Zhu Xi as a metaphysical thinker who introduced metaphysical notions into the Confucian discourse. The true originality and innovation of Zhu Xi was his attempt to appropriate the notion of li 理, which was the key term in the metaphysical speculations of Chinese Buddhism and was also adopted by the early Song neo-Confucians in their cosmological investigations, and to show its relevance and conformity to the classical Confucian ethical thought. The article demonstrates how Zhu Xi turns li 理 into a key ethical concept through identifying it with the particular course of the growth (xing 性) of things and ultimately, with the particular course of human growth (renxing 人性). Introduction Zhu Xi 朱熹 (1130–1200) is generally acknowledged as a great synthesizer of Chinese thought. Without a doubt he is a central figure in Chinese philosophy, and his influence has reached far beyond his own time and place. Zhu Xi’s writings were adopted as an official ideology in China, but his thought provoked discussions in Imperial China as well as among contemporary scholars. The prevailing view in the contemporary scholarship depicts Zhu Xi as a thinker who had developed a highly sophisticated metaphysical system. -

The Taizhou Movement
The Taizhou Movement Being Mindful in Sixteenth Century China Johanna Lidén Academic dissertation for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History of Religion at Stockholm University to be publicly defended on Saturday 8 December 2018 at 10.00 in hörsal 7, Universitetsvägen 10 D. Abstract The aim of this thesis is to define and analyze the religious ideas, praxis and organizations of the Taizhou movement using the earliest sources from the Ming dynasty. The Taizhou movement originated with a salt merchant named Wang Gen (1493–1541), who became a disciple of the well-known Neo-Confucian philosopher Wang Yangming (1472–1529). Wang Gen’s thoughts were similar to his, but his ideas about protecting and respecting the self were new. These ideas and the pursuit of making one’s mind calm inspired his followers who, like Wang Gen, tried to put them into practice. The thesis contextualizes Wang Gen and some of his followers who where active in the sixteenth century such as Yan Jun, Luo Rufang and He Xinyin. It contains texts which have not been translated into English before. Contrary to previous research, the thesis proposes that the Taizhou practitioners did not form a “school” in the strict sense of the word but became a “movement”. The reason was that their ideas corresponded to the anxieties and concerns of people from all levels of society and that they engaged in social and religious activities on the local level. Their ideas and praxis are heterogeneous, a result of the free discussions that were held in private academies. The religious praxis of the Taizhou movement included singing, reciting, individual and communal meditation, discussions and ethical commitments. -
